The risk is not that an ordinary USB cable “catches” malware. It is that a USB connection can link your phone to an untrusted charging station or computer, creating a path for attacks or unwanted software installation. NIST advises avoiding public charging stations and treating trust prompts from unknown USB connections with caution. The evidence supports four risky connection scenarios—not a formal category of four dangerous cable types.
Why the connection matters more than the cable
A USB cable can carry power and data. When you connect a device to a USB port, the other end may belong to a public charging station or a computer, not just a power source. NIST describes malicious charging stations as a physical-access threat: an operator could attempt to exploit a connected device or install malware over the connection. That warning concerns the station and the connection—not a claim that normal cables become infected.

NIST’s separate guidance on malicious apps installed via USB also identifies an infected computer or charging station as a possible source. What the device allows, including whether you approve a prompt, matters; the connection alone does not establish that an attack occurred.

1. A public charging station with a USB port
A station in a public place may be malicious or otherwise untrusted. NIST recommends avoiding public charging stations because they may house malicious chargers. Use a power outlet with your own adapter, or a battery pack, instead of plugging directly into an unknown USB port.

2. A USB port on an infected computer
A computer’s USB port is not necessarily a power-only source. NIST identifies an infected computer as a possible source of malicious applications installed over USB. Avoid charging a personal device from a computer you do not trust.
3. A device connected to an untrusted system that requests trust
Some device connections may display a prompt asking whether to trust the connected computer or accessory. NIST advises not accepting trust prompts from untrusted systems or public chargers. If you do not know or trust the other end of the connection, decline the request and disconnect.

- The Ultimate Data Guardian: Worried about the risk of mobile phone data leakage or viruses when using public charging stations? A data blocker is an effective way to reduce these risks. By physically blocking data transfer, it helps protect your device from potential spyware or hacking attempts while charging
- Only for Charging: With our USB data blocker, you can charge your device without any risk of data transfer. It allows only the charging function while blocking data transfer and syncing. Your phone will not receive pop ups requesting data transmission
- Fast Charging for USB C Data Blocker: JSAUX USB C Data Blocker adopts PD 3.0/2.0 fast charging technology, supports 100W fast charging (20V/5A), and is also compatible with charging power of 240W/140W/60W/45W/36W/27W/15W, etc. The USB Data Blocker supports up to 2.4A charging. (NOTE: The actual charging speed depends on your device and wall charger.)
- Compact Design for Travel and Daily Use: Small and lightweight for easy carrying in pockets, backpacks, or keychains. Ideal for travelers, commuters, and anyone who frequently uses public charging stations. The transparent casing provides a modern and durable look
- USB & USB C Data Blockers 4 Pack: We offer you two USB Data Blockers and two USB C Data Blockers, compatible with iPhone 18 Pro/18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17/17e/Air/17 Pro/17 Pro Max, iPhone 16/16 Plus/16 Pro/16 Pro Max, iPhone 15/15 Plus/15 Pro/15 Pro Max, Samsung, iPad, Macbook and other devices. Works with both USB and USB C ports, ideal for safe charging at airports, hotels, and public charging stations
4. A data-capable cable used with an unknown USB port
A regular USB cable may support both charging and data transfer. Plugable’s guidance says a charge-only USB-C cable removes the data lines, allowing charging while preventing the host from seeing the device over that cable. This can reduce exposure through a USB data connection, but it does not make an untrusted power source safe in every respect.

How to charge more safely
- Prefer your own wall adapter and a wall outlet. NIST recommends charging through an electrical wall-socket charger rather than a potentially malicious station or a USB port on an infected computer.
- Carry a battery pack when useful. NIST and Plugable identify a personal battery pack as an alternative to an unknown USB charging port.
- Decline trust requests from unknown connections. Do not approve a prompt just to get charging to continue.
- Keep Android USB debugging off unless you need it. NIST recommends disabling USB debugging when it is not needed. Menu names and locations can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Consider a charge-only cable if you need to use a USB power source. Plugable says its charge-only USB-C cables retain charging but cannot transfer data or sync. This is manufacturer guidance, not an independent comparative test, and it describes the cable’s data behavior rather than guaranteeing protection from every threat.
- Keep device security practices current. A cable is only one part of mobile security. NIST’s broader mobile-device guidance addresses security controls and lifecycle practices, but it is not a cable-specific guarantee.
Standard versus charge-only USB-C cables
| Cable type | Data transfer | Charging | Can the host recognize the device? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard USB-C cable | Supported, depending on the cable and connected devices | Supported | May be able to; Plugable contrasts this with its charge-only cable guidance |
| Charge-only USB-C cable | No, according to Plugable; data lines are removed | Supported, according to Plugable | No, according to Plugable |
These descriptions reflect Plugable’s product guidance, last updated August 21, 2025, rather than independent testing of all USB-C cables. A charge-only cable also cannot sync files or use other data functions over that cable.

What the evidence does—and does not—say
NIST’s guidance establishes that malicious charging stations and USB-connected software installation are recognized threat scenarios; it does not quantify how often consumers encounter them. NIST’s September 2025 publication on portable storage media discusses cybersecurity controls for operational technology environments, including USB storage devices. It is useful context for removable-media security, but it is not evidence that consumer charging cables pose a widespread threat. Likewise, NIST’s mobile-device security guidance is broader than charging cables.
The practical rule is straightforward: treat an unknown USB port as a connection to an unknown device. Use your own adapter or battery pack when possible, refuse untrusted prompts, and use a charge-only cable when you need to block data transfer through the cable and can accept losing sync functionality.
