Neither USB-C nor 3.5 mm headphones automatically sound better. Sound depends on the headphones and the digital-to-analog conversion and amplification in the phone, computer, headphones, or adapter. The right choice comes down to your device’s ports, audio support, and whether you want to reuse existing headphones.
Does USB-C or 3.5 mm sound better?
The connector alone does not determine sound quality. A digital audio source must be converted to an analog signal and amplified before it reaches headphone drivers. With a 3.5 mm connection, that conversion happens in the device driving the headphone jack. With USB-C digital audio, conversion can happen in the headphones or in an external adapter.

USB-C can also carry analog audio in device designs that support that mode; it is not always a digital-audio connection. Texas Instruments explains the design requirements and limitations of analog audio accessory mode in its USB Type-C audio technical article.

The cited specifications do not establish a universal sound-quality winner, and a higher sample-rate capability by itself does not prove an audible improvement.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How the connections carry audio
| Connection | Typical audio path | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm headphones | The device converts and amplifies audio before sending an analog signal through the jack. | The device needs a compatible 3.5 mm output, or you need an appropriate adapter. |
| USB-C headphones or USB audio adapter | Digital audio travels over USB; conversion and amplification take place in the headphones or adapter. | The host must support USB audio output, and the headphone or adapter must support any microphone or controls you need. |
| USB-C analog audio accessory | Supported devices can route analog audio through USB-C wiring. | Both the host and accessory must support this implementation. Do not assume a passive USB-C-to-3.5 mm cable will work with every device. |
Android’s USB-C-to-analog adapter specification describes an adapter that performs digital-to-analog conversion and can support headset-related functions. That is different from relying on a device’s supported analog-audio routing over USB-C.
Will your headphones work with your device?
Compatibility depends on the exact phone, tablet, or computer and the accessory. Android 16’s Compatibility Definition describes USB host-mode audio output using USB Audio Class. It also specifies behavior for Android devices that include a four-conductor 3.5 mm jack. These are Android implementation requirements, not a guarantee about every USB-C device or operating system.

- USB-C plug and play: Connect to phones, tablets and laptops that support USB-C digital audio; ready for lessons and everyday listening without Bluetooth pairing or headphone charging
- Mic and in-line controls: Join online classes and work calls with the built-in microphone; adjust volume and manage music playback from the cord without reaching for your device
- Comfortable fit: Soft memory foam ear cushions, an adjustable headband and 90-degree rotating ear cups help you find a comfortable position for studying, working or listening
- 40 mm stereo drivers: Enjoy music, movies and spoken audio with stereo sound; the over-ear cushions provide passive sound isolation to help reduce surrounding distractions
- Foldable for travel: Fold the headphones for storage between classes or commutes; 1.2 m braided cord for everyday use, with headphones and user manual included; carrying bag not included
- Identify the host. Check the device model and whether it has a 3.5 mm jack. If you are unsure about USB headphones or a USB audio adapter, consult the device maker’s audio specifications or support information.
- For USB-C headphones, confirm USB audio support. Check that the host supports USB audio output and that the headphone functions you need—such as a microphone or inline buttons—are supported by that combination.
- For 3.5 mm headphones on a USB-C-only device, choose a USB audio adapter. Look for an adapter intended to convert USB audio to analog 3.5 mm output. Verify microphone input and button support if you use a headset rather than headphones without a microphone.
- Check headset wiring and controls. Android 16 specifies CTIA wiring for the four-conductor jack implementations covered by its compatibility document. That does not establish that every device or adapter supports every headset or control scheme.
When an adapter makes sense
If you already own 3.5 mm headphones and your device lacks a headphone jack, a compatible USB-C audio adapter can let you keep using them. Android’s adapter specification covers stereo output, microphone input conversion, headset detection, and button-event translation, but the adapter and host still need to support the functions you want.

Apple currently lists a USB-C to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter for standard 3.5 mm audio devices. Its product listing establishes that this adapter is available from Apple in the United States; it is not a compatibility guarantee for every USB-C device. Check the product’s regional availability and your host’s USB audio support before buying.

Which connection is more convenient?
- USB-C is convenient when your device supports USB audio and you want a direct connection without a separate adapter. The headphones use the device’s USB-C port.
- 3.5 mm is convenient when your device has a matching jack: plug in and listen without occupying USB-C. On a device without that jack, you will need a compatible adapter.
- Either can suit a new wired-headphone purchase. Choose based on the devices you use and the features you need, rather than expecting USB-C to improve sound by itself.
