USB-C vs. 3.5 mm Wired Earbuds: What Works With Your Device?

Short answer: 3.5 mm earbuds work directly only when your phone, tablet, or computer has a 3.5 mm headphone jack. USB-C earbuds work only when the USB-C port supports digital audio. If your device has USB-C but no headphone jack, you can usually reuse 3.5 mm earbuds with a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter that contains a compatible digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The connector’s shape alone does not prove compatibility.

Start with the port, then check the audio hardware

Wired-earbud compatibility has two separate questions: can the plug physically fit, and does the device send the kind of audio signal the earbuds expect? A 3.5 mm plug carries analog audio. USB-C earbuds normally receive digital audio through the port and convert it inside the earbud cable or housing. A USB-C socket can support charging, data, video, audio, or only some of those functions, depending on the device.

That is why a USB-C earbud set may work on one phone and remain silent on another phone with an apparently identical port. Google’s Pixel guidance specifically tells users to verify USB-C digital-audio support rather than assuming that every USB-C port supports headphones: Google’s USB-C earbud setup instructions.

Earbud connection What the host device must provide When an adapter is needed
3.5 mm plug A 3.5 mm headphone jack with compatible headset wiring Needed when the device has no 3.5 mm jack
USB-C earbuds A USB-C port with digital-audio support Not normally needed on a compatible USB-C audio port
3.5 mm earbuds through USB-C A USB-C audio path plus an adapter containing the required DAC Always needed on a device without a 3.5 mm jack

If you are buying or reusing earbuds, identify the exact phone, tablet, or computer model first. Then verify the audio specification and the functions you need, such as calls, microphone input, volume buttons, or a play/pause button.

How 3.5 mm and USB-C audio differ

3.5 mm sends an analog signal

With a conventional 3.5 mm headset, the device’s audio circuitry converts digital music or call audio to an analog electrical signal before it reaches the plug. The earbuds turn that analog signal into sound. The jack also carries the microphone signal and, on four-contact headset plugs, button-control signals.

A 3.5 mm plug therefore cannot create compatibility by itself. It needs a matching jack or an adapter that performs the missing conversion and preserves the headset contacts.

USB-C normally sends digital audio

USB-C earbuds communicate as a USB audio accessory. The host sends digital audio data, and a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) in the earbuds or their cable drives the speakers. Some devices require USB audio to be enabled in sound settings, and some support music playback but not calls through every USB-C earbud model.

Android’s documented USB-C-to-analog adapter design supports stereo output, one analog input channel for a microphone, insertion and microphone detection, output-impedance detection, and translation of headset-button events into HID events. The same specification permits digital-to-analog adapters and rejects analog-only adapters: Android’s USB-C-to-analog audio adapter specification.

Why passive cables often fail

A passive USB-C-to-3.5 mm cable simply rewires contacts. It does not contain the conversion electronics needed when the phone expects a digital USB audio accessory. The result can be no sound, an accessory-not-supported message, or audio without a working microphone or controls. Samsung’s current guidance for newer Galaxy models calls for a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a built-in DAC and tells users to check compatibility when choosing a third-party adapter: Samsung’s DAC adapter guidance.

Compatibility by device family

Samsung Galaxy phones

Samsung’s support page updated 12 August 2026 says newer Galaxy models without a dedicated 3.5 mm socket require a USB Type-C-to-3.5 mm headset adapter with a built-in DAC. The page also advises checking DAC compatibility for third-party adapters. This is a requirement for the models covered by that guidance, not a guarantee that every Galaxy device has the same port arrangement.

Samsung’s separate page, updated 19 June 2026, describes both ways to connect wired audio: a 3.5 mm headset through a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, or USB-C wired headphones directly to a Galaxy USB-C port. Confirm your exact Galaxy model and accessory before purchase: Samsung’s wired-headphone connection instructions.

Google Pixel phones

Google says all Pixel phones support USB-C audio accessories or Bluetooth. Pixel 3a, Pixel 4a, and Pixel 4a (5G) include a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Other Pixel phones can use 3.5 mm accessories through an adapter. Google also directs users to verify digital-audio compatibility for USB-C adapters and accessories: Google Pixel audio and headphone guidance.

When using USB-C earbuds on a Pixel or another device, Google notes that some hosts require USB audio to be enabled in sound settings and that some devices may not allow calls through the earbuds. Music playback therefore does not prove that the microphone and call path will work: Google’s Pixel USB-C earbud instructions.

USB-C iPhone models

Apple’s support guidance says wired USB-C headphones, including USB-C EarPods, can be used with USB-C iPhone models. For standard 3.5 mm headphones or speakers, Apple directs users to its USB-C-to-3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter. The UK product listing describes that adapter as connecting standard 3.5 mm headphones or speakers to USB-C devices: Apple’s USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter listing. Regional availability and pricing can change.

Other phones, tablets, and computers

There is no universal model list that proves USB-C audio support for every Android phone, tablet, Chromebook, Windows computer, or Mac. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications or support page for “USB-C digital audio,” “USB audio,” or headset compatibility. If you need a 3.5 mm headset through USB-C, also verify that the recommended adapter includes a DAC and supports headset input.

Choose the right setup step by step

  1. Identify the device’s physical ports. Look for a genuine 3.5 mm headphone socket. A small circular jack is different from a USB-C charging/data port. If the 3.5 mm jack exists and is enabled, ordinary 3.5 mm earbuds can connect directly.
  2. Check USB-C digital-audio support. If there is no headphone jack and you want USB-C earbuds, read the exact device specification or support page. Do not infer audio support from the presence of USB-C alone.
  3. Select the connection that matches your earbuds. USB-C earbuds require a compatible digital-audio port. Existing 3.5 mm earbuds require a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter on a jackless device.
  4. Verify the adapter’s electronics. Choose an adapter explicitly described as DAC-equipped or digitally compatible with your device. Avoid a passive, analog-only cable when the host expects USB digital audio. Newer Galaxy guidance specifically requires a built-in DAC, and Android’s documented design does not support analog-only adapters.
  5. Check headset functions. If calls, voice recordings, volume buttons, or a play/pause button matter, confirm that the device and adapter support the microphone and inline controls. A listing that promises stereo playback may not promise call support.
  6. Connect and select the output. Insert the adapter or USB-C earbuds firmly, unlock the device, and open its sound-output controls. Choose the connected USB audio device if the system does not switch automatically. On devices that expose a USB-audio setting, enable it.
  7. Test every function before keeping the setup. Play music, make a call, record a short voice memo, test the inline buttons, and move the plug gently to check for intermittent contact. These tests distinguish basic playback compatibility from full headset compatibility.

Which option is better for your situation?

Situation Most practical choice What to verify
Your device has a 3.5 mm jack Use 3.5 mm earbuds directly Headset wiring and microphone support if calls matter
Your device has USB-C digital audio and you are buying new earbuds USB-C digital earbuds Digital-audio support, call support, microphone, and controls
You already own good 3.5 mm earbuds and your device has no jack USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with a compatible DAC Device-specific DAC compatibility and headset functions
Your device’s USB-C audio support is unclear Check the manufacturer’s specification before buying Whether USB-C digital audio is supported at all
You need reliable calls and controls The combination documented for your exact model Microphone, button events, and call routing, not only music playback

Neither connector is established by the available manufacturer documentation as universally better in sound quality. The practical difference is compatibility: 3.5 mm needs an analog jack or an active adapter, while USB-C needs digital-audio support and a working USB audio implementation.

Microphones, calls, and inline buttons

Playback is only one part of a wired headset. A four-contact 3.5 mm plug can carry a microphone and button signals, but an adapter must map those contacts correctly to the device. Android’s adapter specification describes microphone detection and translation of headset-button events, yet that specification does not guarantee that every commercial adapter and every host will implement the same behavior.

USB-C earbuds expose their microphone and controls as part of the USB audio accessory. The host must support the relevant input and control functions. Google warns that some devices may not permit calls through USB-C earbuds even when audio playback works. For work calls, gaming chat, accessibility controls, or voice recording, treat microphone and call compatibility as a separate buying requirement.

  • Look for explicit support for headset microphone input, not just “stereo audio.”
  • Check whether inline volume and media buttons are supported on the exact host.
  • Test a phone call and a recording app; a music player cannot verify the return microphone path.
  • If the device has multiple audio outputs, confirm that the call app is using the wired headset rather than the built-in microphone and speaker.

Troubleshoot a headset that is not detected

No sound from USB-C earbuds

  • Confirm that the device’s USB-C port supports digital audio. A charging-capable port is not automatically an audio-capable port.
  • Reconnect the earbuds after unlocking the device and check the sound-output selector.
  • Look for a USB-audio setting and enable it if the device requires that option.
  • Test the earbuds on a second device known to support USB-C digital audio. If they fail there too, inspect the cable and connector for damage.

No sound from 3.5 mm earbuds through USB-C

  • Replace a passive cable with a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter that explicitly contains a DAC.
  • Check the adapter against the phone maker’s compatibility guidance. Samsung’s newer Galaxy instructions specifically call for a built-in DAC.
  • Reconnect the adapter with the 3.5 mm plug fully inserted. Remove cases that prevent the USB-C plug from seating completely.
  • Try the adapter with another pair of 3.5 mm earbuds. If one headset works and another does not, the issue may be wiring or contact compatibility.

Music works but calls or buttons do not

  • Confirm that the device supports USB headset input and call routing, not only digital playback.
  • Check the calling app’s selected microphone and speaker.
  • Test the inline controls in the device’s default music app; some third-party apps ignore headset-button events.
  • Use the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting instructions before replacing the earbuds.

Intermittent audio or crackling

  • Inspect both connectors for lint, moisture, bent contacts, or physical damage.
  • Remove a tight case and reseat the plug so the connector reaches its full depth.
  • Disable any setting that reroutes audio to Bluetooth or another USB device.
  • Compare direct 3.5 mm use, the adapter, and another headset to isolate whether the fault is in the host port, adapter, or earbuds.

Buying checklist

  • For direct 3.5 mm use: confirm the device actually has a headphone jack.
  • For USB-C earbuds: confirm USB-C digital-audio support for the exact device model.
  • For an adapter: choose a DAC-equipped USB-C-to-3.5 mm model when required by the host; avoid descriptions that identify it as analog-only.
  • For calls: verify microphone and call support separately from music playback.
  • For controls: verify inline button compatibility if volume or playback control is important.
  • For uncertain devices: prefer an accessory named in the manufacturer’s support documentation or one with a clear compatibility policy.
  • For existing earbuds: test the complete combination—device, adapter, earbuds, case, and calling app—rather than testing each component in isolation.

What the connector cannot tell you

A USB-C label does not reveal whether the port supports digital audio, whether the operating system enables USB audio, whether calls are routed through the accessory, or whether an adapter contains a DAC. Likewise, a 3.5 mm plug does not guarantee that a phone’s headset wiring matches every microphone and button arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility is therefore a property of the complete chain: host port, operating-system audio support, adapter electronics, earbud wiring, and the application handling the call or recording. Verify the specific combination instead of relying on the connector name or a generic product photograph.

Bottom line for common scenarios

Use 3.5 mm earbuds directly when your device has a 3.5 mm jack. If it does not, reuse them with a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter that has the DAC your device requires. Choose USB-C earbuds only after confirming that the USB-C port supports digital audio, then check microphone, call, and control support if those features matter. Manufacturer guidance from Samsung, Google, Apple, and Android’s USB audio specification provides useful model and implementation checks, but none of those pages establishes universal compatibility for every USB-C device.
