Short answer: match the charger to your exact iPhone model, use USB Power Delivery (USB-PD), and use the correct USB-C or USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Apple’s current targets range from 20W for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air to 40W or more for iPhone 17 models, while iPhone 18 Pro models require a 60W-capable cable and a 60W-capable-or-greater adapter supporting AVS and USB-PD 3.2 for Apple’s approximately 15-minute-to-50% claim. These are Apple test targets, not guaranteed times for every phone or setup.
Wattage and cable requirements by iPhone model
The connector on the phone determines the cable, while the model determines the useful charger output. Apple’s model-specific instructions are summarized below. Read the wattage and protocol requirements together; a high number printed on a charger is not enough if the port does not provide the required USB-PD profile.

What “watts” means for iPhone charging
Watts are the power available from the adapter’s port, calculated from voltage multiplied by current. A 60W adapter does not force 60W into an iPhone. The phone and charger negotiate a safe USB-PD level, and the iPhone draws only what its charging system requests. Therefore, a higher-rated adapter is generally usable, but it does not automatically make a model charge faster than its supported ceiling.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The important qualification is power at the port you are using. A multiport adapter may advertise a large total output while allocating less power to each port when several devices are connected. Apple’s newer specifications also call for particular voltage and current profiles. For the iPhone 17 family, Apple’s adapter guide lists USB-C output, 40W continuous sustained power, 60W maximum power and specified AVS/output profiles. For iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple specifies AVS and USB-PD 3.2 with at least 60W capability. Do not reduce either requirement to “any charger with a large watt number.”
Choose the correct USB-C protocol
For faster wired charging, Apple says to use a USB-C Power Delivery charger and a USB-C cable with iPhone 15 models and later. A third-party adapter should explicitly support USB-PD and should provide the required output on the individual port. USB-C describes the connector; USB-PD describes the power-negotiation standard. A USB-C port without suitable PD support may charge slowly even when its shape fits.
Apple’s About iPhone charge speeds guide also notes that iPhone 15 models and later are limited to a maximum of 7.5W when charged from USB-A. A USB-A-to-USB-C cable can therefore be convenient for basic charging, but it is not the route to the fastest wired speeds on those phones.
Which cable should you use?
iPhone 15 and later
These iPhones have a USB-C connector, so use a USB-C-to-USB-C cable with a USB-C PD adapter. The cable included with the phone is the sensible default for ordinary charging and for models where Apple does not specify a higher cable rating. For iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, Apple’s fast-charge instructions specifically say to use the USB-C charge cable in the box.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Apple specifies a USB-C cable rated for 60W or more when claiming approximately 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes. A cable’s power rating is separate from its data-transfer speed: you do not need to buy a high-speed data cable solely for charging, but the cable must be marked or documented as capable of at least 60W.
iPhone 14 and earlier
These models use Lightning. For fast wired charging, use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable with a USB-C PD adapter. The Lightning connector, rather than the adapter’s connector, is what distinguishes the cable from the USB-C-to-USB-C cable used by iPhone 15 and later.
A damaged, unusually thin, uncertified or poorly made cable can cause intermittent charging, heat or a fallback to a lower power level. If charging stops when the cable is moved, replace the cable before troubleshooting the adapter.

How much wattage do you actually need?
If you own an iPhone 17e or iPhone Air
Start with a 20W-or-higher USB-C PD adapter. Apple’s approximately 30-minute-to-50% result used a 20W USB-C power adapter and a USB-C charge cable with preproduction iPhone 17e units. A larger adapter is not required merely to reach that stated target.

If you own an iPhone 17, 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max
Use a USB-C PD adapter capable of at least 40W at the port in use. Apple’s approximately 20-minute-to-50% test used its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max and the supplied USB-C cable. A 40W-or-higher adapter is the practical minimum for matching Apple’s stated target; check the port’s sustained output if the adapter has multiple ports.
If you own an iPhone 18 Pro or 18 Pro Max
Use a 60W-capable-or-greater adapter that supports AVS and USB-PD 3.2, together with a 60W-or-higher USB-C cable. Apple’s approximately 15-minute-to-50% claim uses its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max as the named accessory. The protocol and cable rating are part of the requirement, not optional extras.
If you own an older fast-charge-compatible iPhone
Apple’s general guidance covers iPhone 8 and later and gives an 18W-or-greater Apple USB-C adapter, or a comparable USB-PD adapter, as the baseline. Use USB-C-to-Lightning for iPhone 14 and earlier. The exact peak draw and time depend on the model, battery condition, temperature and software, so the general 18W recommendation should not be presented as one guaranteed percentage or time.
Wired charging versus MagSafe wireless charging
Wired and wireless recommendations are different. Do not apply a wired 40W or 60W requirement to a MagSafe setup. Apple’s current instructions say iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air can wirelessly fast-charge with MagSafe and a 30W-or-greater USB-C adapter, or a comparable third-party USB-PD adapter. For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple lists MagSafe charging up to 15W with a 20W-or-greater USB-C adapter or comparable USB-PD adapter. iPhone 18 Pro models have separate MagSafe instructions, so check the model page rather than assuming the earlier figures apply.

MagSafe performance also depends on alignment, the MagSafe charger and the adapter feeding it. Apple notes that a connected USB-C or Lightning accessory can cause MagSafe charging to be limited under regulatory rules, and model-specific limits may apply. If peak wireless speed matters, disconnect wired accessories and use the adapter specified for the MagSafe generation.
Why Apple’s advertised charging time may differ for you
“About 50% in about 15, 20 or 30 minutes” describes Apple’s controlled tests, not a promise for every charge. Apple identifies preproduction phones, named adapters and cables, and drained batteries in its test notes. Your result can change with:
- Ambient temperature or a phone that is already hot or cold.
- Screen use, games, navigation, video recording or other processor- and graphics-intensive tasks while charging.
- A multiport adapter sharing power with another device.
- A USB hub, monitor, keyboard, vehicle port or other intermediate connection.
- Battery state, software behavior and charging-management features.
- Wireless losses and alignment when using MagSafe rather than a direct cable.
Apple states that fast charging might not work in conditions that are too cold or too hot. The phone may reduce power temporarily to protect the battery and electronics; that behavior does not mean the adapter is defective.

- Confirm the model and connector. Check whether the phone is an iPhone 15 or later with USB-C, or an earlier Lightning model. Then use the wattage and cable row that matches it.
- Check the adapter label and protocol. Look for USB-PD and confirm that the port provides at least the required wattage. For iPhone 18 Pro, verify AVS and USB-PD 3.2 as well as 60W capability.
- Connect directly to the wall adapter. Remove hubs, vehicle ports, monitors and other intermediate devices. These can provide less power than the adapter itself.
- Disconnect other devices from a multiport charger. Test with only the iPhone attached. If it becomes faster, the adapter was sharing its output.
- Inspect or replace the cable. Use USB-C-to-USB-C for USB-C iPhones, USB-C-to-Lightning for earlier models, and a 60W-rated USB-C cable for iPhone 18 Pro models. Check both connectors for debris or damage.
- Stop demanding tasks temporarily. Lock the screen and pause games, navigation, video capture and other intensive apps while testing.
- Control temperature. Move the phone and charger to a moderate, ventilated place. Remove insulating coverings if the phone is hot, and do not try to force fast charging in extreme cold or heat.
- Read the iOS warning. iOS 18 and later may show a “Slow Charger” message when a higher-wattage charger could improve charging. Treat the warning as a prompt to check the adapter, port allocation and cable rather than as proof that the battery is faulty.
A practical buying checklist
Before buying a replacement charger or cable, verify each item:
- Exact iPhone model: identify the model before choosing 20W, 40W or 60W equipment.
- Connector: USB-C-to-USB-C for iPhone 15 and later; USB-C-to-Lightning for earlier models.
- Protocol: USB-PD for fast wired charging; AVS and USB-PD 3.2 where Apple specifies them for iPhone 18 Pro models.
- Port output: confirm the sustained output of the specific port, especially on multiport chargers.
- Cable rating: use at least 60W for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max; otherwise the supplied cable is an appropriate default unless Apple lists a different requirement.
- Charging method: choose a direct wired setup or a MagSafe adapter combination according to the separate wireless requirements.
You do not need a new charger if your existing adapter already meets the model’s wattage, USB-PD and port-output requirements. Conversely, buying a higher-wattage adapter alone will not overcome a USB-A limitation, an under-rated cable, shared-port power reduction or temperature throttling.
What the official figures do—and do not—promise
Apple’s figures are useful targets for comparing a correctly configured setup: approximately 50% in 15 minutes for iPhone 18 Pro models, 20 minutes for iPhone 17 models, and 30 minutes for iPhone 17e. They are not universal measurements for every battery, charger brand, cable, temperature or usage pattern. Apple’s general fast-charge recommendation for iPhone 8 and later is a minimum-style compatibility guide, not a claim that every supported model reaches the same speed.
For the most accurate current requirement, use Apple’s model-specific fast-charge page, the power-adapter specifications, and the USB-C connector guide together. Their labels distinguish wired charging, MagSafe charging, cable ratings and regional or model-specific conditions.
