US vs India for Tech Careers: How to Compare Salary, Cost of Living, and Opportunities

There is no honest country-wide answer to whether the United States or India is better for a technology career. Compare the same occupation and seniority in two named cities, calculate net compensation after taxes and benefits, price the actual household budget, and then account for work authorization and career mobility. The available official figures are not a matched comparison: U.S. data describes software-developer pay and employment outlook, while India’s headline figures describe its much broader technology industry.

The short answer: compare offers, not countries

A U.S. offer can produce less savings than an Indian offer in a particular case, and the reverse can also be true. The result depends on the job family, level, metro area, household size, housing choice, taxes, benefits, commute, family obligations, currency exposure and immigration status. “U.S. salary” and “Indian salary” are not single market rates.

Start with two real options. Write down the exact role (for example, software developer, QA analyst, data engineer or security engineer), level, employer location, work arrangement and compensation components. Then compare after-tax cash and the value of benefits against the same categories of household spending. Treat opportunity statistics as market context, not as a promise that a particular applicant will be hired.

What the official numbers actually measure

Figure What it covers How to use it
$135,980 median annual wage, May 2025 U.S. software developers; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), released in 2026 A U.S. occupation benchmark, not an India comparison or a guaranteed offer
10% projected growth, 2025–2035 U.S. software-developer employment; BLS A national projection, not an individual applicant’s probability of employment
1,717,800 jobs in 2025 U.S. software developers; BLS The size of the U.S. occupation as defined by BLS
$148,100 mean annual wage, May 2025 U.S. software developers; BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) A mean, not a median; U.S.-only and not directly comparable with the $135,980 median
$111,490 mean annual wage, May 2025 U.S. software quality-assurance analysts and testers; BLS OEWS A separate U.S. occupation and mean, not a country-to-country salary series
USD 254 billion estimated FY24 revenue India’s technology industry, cited by the Ministry of Finance in the Economic Survey 2024–25 from NASSCOM’s Strategic Review Report 2024 Broad sector context, not software-developer revenue or job openings
Nearly USD 200 billion in FY24 exports The same broad Indian technology industry Shows export scale; it is not a wage or hiring measure
5.43 million workers in FY24, after 60,000 additions The same broad Indian technology industry Sector workforce, not the number of software-engineer vacancies

The Indian industry definition includes IT services, business-process management, engineering research and development, software products and hardware. Comparing its 5.43 million workers with the BLS count of U.S. software developers would mix a broad sector with one occupation.

U.S. salary and outlook: useful benchmarks with limits

Median versus mean

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $135,980 in May 2025 for U.S. software developers. A median is the midpoint: half of reported workers earned more and half earned less. The BLS OEWS table separately reports a $148,100 mean for software developers and a $111,490 mean for software quality-assurance analysts and testers. A mean is pulled upward by high earners, so do not substitute one statistic for another or present either as the salary of every developer.

Why an individual offer can differ

BLS notes that earnings vary with experience, responsibility, performance, tenure and geographic area. A national figure therefore cannot price an offer in a named metro area. Compare the employer’s base salary with the local market, but preserve the measure’s label (median or mean), date and occupation when you write it into your worksheet.

Reading the growth projection correctly

BLS projects 10% growth from 2025 to 2035 for U.S. software developers and counts 1,717,800 jobs in 2025. This is a national occupational projection. It does not say that a foreign applicant will obtain sponsorship, that every city will grow at the same rate, or that a particular person has a 10% chance of being hired. Use it to describe the broad direction of the U.S. occupation, then investigate the demand for your specialty and level in the actual city.

India’s technology market: large, but reported differently

The Ministry of Finance’s Economic Survey 2024–25, citing NASSCOM’s Strategic Review Report 2024, estimates India’s technology-industry revenue at USD 254 billion in FY24, with exports of nearly USD 200 billion. The sector’s workforce reached 5.43 million after adding 60,000 employees.

Those figures establish the scale and export orientation of a broad industry. They do not provide a current, matched salary distribution for Indian software engineers, nor do they count open software-developer positions. They also should not be compared directly with the BLS software-developer occupation. A sound comparison requires the same role, level, city and compensation definition in both countries.

Why Indian salary claims need extra care

India’s Labour Bureau says its Occupational Wage Survey is the source intended to provide occupational wage details. It also explains that other wage statistics have serious gaps because they are often industry-level rather than occupation-wise. The available official material does not establish a current software-engineer wage series that matches the U.S. BLS measure. Do not fill that gap with an invented national average or treat an industry total as an individual pay benchmark.

A matched salary comparison, step by step

  1. Define the job. Use the exact family and level: for example, backend software developer at mid-level, rather than “tech.” Record the main technologies, management responsibility, on-call expectations and employment type.
  2. Normalize the pay period and currency. Convert annual and monthly figures to one basis, record the exchange-rate date used for planning, and show the original currency beside the converted value. Currency movements can change the result for someone supporting relatives or saving in another currency.
  3. Separate guaranteed and contingent compensation. List base pay, recurring allowances, target bonus, commission, equity, signing payment and relocation assistance in separate rows. Mark what is guaranteed, what depends on performance, and what vests over time.
  4. Value benefits explicitly. Include employer health coverage, retirement contributions or provident-fund contributions, paid leave, disability or life insurance, parental benefits and meal or transport support. A benefit that cannot be used by your household should not be valued as cash.
  5. Calculate net cash. Subtract national, state or local taxes and mandatory contributions using the rules for the exact work location and tax year. Keep one-time relocation payments separate from recurring income. The result you need is expected monthly cash after deductions, not headline gross pay.
  6. Stress-test uncertain items. Run a conservative case with no bonus, lower equity value or a delayed start, and a likely case using the employer’s stated assumptions. Do not count unvested equity as spendable cash.
  7. Record evidence and dates. For every number, note the employer, location, currency, whether it is a mean, median or range, and the date it was quoted. This prevents a national statistic from silently replacing the offer you are actually considering.

How to compare cost of living without inventing a winner

A country-level rent multiplier or universal purchasing-power verdict is not defensible without a matched, current city-level household basket. The available official material does not establish one for the United States and India. Instead, build two budgets for named cities and equivalent household arrangements.

Match the household first

  • Use the same household size and dependants, or show separate single-person and family cases.
  • Compare similar housing standards: room, apartment or house; furnished or unfurnished; central or peripheral location; and whether utilities are included.
  • Specify the commute, number of in-office days, vehicle ownership and public-transport needs.
  • Include recurring support for relatives, remittances, school or childcare, and travel to maintain family ties when those obligations apply.

Build the recurring-expense basket

List housing, utilities, internet and mobile service, groceries, meals outside the home, transportation, healthcare premiums and out-of-pocket costs, insurance, childcare or education, clothing, personal care, debt payments, subscriptions, remittances and an emergency reserve. Use actual quotes or bills for the two cities and date each estimate. Keep one-time deposits, furniture and relocation costs in a separate start-up budget.

Account for benefits and hidden costs

Health insurance can change the U.S. net result through employee premiums, deductibles, co-insurance and an out-of-pocket maximum. An Indian employer’s medical coverage may have different limits, exclusions or family eligibility. Retirement contributions, paid leave and employer-provided transport also affect the value of an offer, but they do not all reduce this month’s rent bill. Show them separately rather than folding unlike items into one unexplained “cost of living” number.

Use savings as the decision output

For each offer calculate monthly savings = net monthly cash − recurring monthly expenses. Then calculate an annual figure after adding expected travel, tax settlements, insurance renewals, relocation amortization and other non-monthly costs. Present a range rather than false precision when rent, exchange rates, bonus or medical expenses are uncertain. The relevant question is how much this particular household can save while meeting its goals, not which country has a universally lower price level.

Opportunity, career development and stability

Employer mix and role scope

Ask whether the offer is with a product company, IT-services provider, business-process organization, engineering R&D group, software-product firm or hardware company. The Indian sector statistics cover all of these categories, while the U.S. BLS software-developer figures cover one occupation. Compare the actual team, product stage, technical ownership, customer exposure and path to senior or staff-level responsibility.

Demand is local and specialized

The U.S. 10% projection is a useful national signal, but it cannot identify demand for your particular stack or city. Check the employer’s hiring plan, the number of comparable teams, on-call expectations and whether work can continue if a project ends. In India, the sector’s export scale and 5.43 million-worker base show a substantial ecosystem, but they do not tell you how many openings exist for your level. Ask each employer about project duration, bench policy, internal mobility and promotion criteria.

Learning and network effects

Compare access to experienced mentors, architecture ownership, conferences, customer or product proximity, and the likelihood of working with globally distributed teams. A role with lower first-year savings may be rational if it gives you demonstrable ownership that qualifies you for a materially stronger next move; that is a personal career hypothesis to test with the manager, not a guaranteed return.

Work authorization can change the financial answer

If the U.S. option depends on a visa, include sponsorship, timing and failure scenarios in the comparison. For H-1B, H-1B1 and E-3 programs, the U.S. Department of Labor says the employer must pay the prevailing wage or the actual wage paid to similarly skilled and qualified workers, whichever is higher. It defines the prevailing wage as “the average wage paid to similarly employed workers in a specific occupation in the area of intended employment.” The rule is location- and occupation-specific; a national salary figure cannot establish compliance for a particular job.

Ask the employer, in writing, which status is proposed, who pays filing and legal costs, what happens if a petition is delayed or denied, whether you may change employers, and how long you can remain if employment ends. Include dependent work rights, travel restrictions, renewal timing and the risk of having to relocate again. Immigration outcomes depend on individual facts and changing rules, so obtain advice from a qualified immigration professional for a personal case rather than relying on a general comparison.

A practical decision framework for two real offers

  1. Freeze the facts. Save each offer letter, benefits summary, office address, start date, probation terms, severance language and visa condition. Do not compare a firm offer with an unverified salary conversation.
  2. Choose a common scenario. Define household members, housing standard, commute, savings currency and support obligations. Create a second scenario if your household might change within two years.
  3. Compute three financial cases. Use conservative, likely and upside cases for bonus, equity, exchange rate and medical or relocation costs. Keep one-time payments outside recurring savings.
  4. Score career durability. Rate the role’s technical depth, manager quality, product or customer exposure, learning pace, internal mobility and likelihood of continued employment. Write the evidence for each rating instead of assigning points from a generic country ranking.
  5. Price authorization risk. Estimate the cost and disruption of a delayed visa, a denied petition, a forced return or a job change. If the employer will not explain the process, mark that uncertainty explicitly.
  6. Set a decision threshold. Decide the minimum monthly savings, maximum acceptable relocation risk and minimum career-growth conditions that make an option viable. A small financial advantage should not automatically outweigh a failure to meet a non-negotiable condition.
  7. Recheck before signing. Confirm salary currency, start date, office location, benefits eligibility, tax treatment and immigration terms. Recalculate if any of them changes.

Common comparison mistakes and their fixes

  • Putting a U.S. median beside an Indian industry average. Fix it by matching occupation, level, city and statistic type; if an Indian occupation figure is not established, label it as unknown.
  • Comparing gross salary. Fix it by deducting taxes, mandatory contributions, employee benefit premiums and recurring household costs.
  • Using a national rent ratio. Fix it by pricing the actual neighborhoods and housing arrangements you would accept.
  • Counting a sector workforce as vacancies. Fix it by treating India’s 5.43 million workers as sector context and asking employers about real openings.
  • Treating projected growth as a hiring guarantee. Fix it by separating the BLS national projection from your specialty, location, authorization and application strength.
  • Ignoring family and currency obligations. Fix it by adding remittances, cross-border travel, transfer fees and the currency in which you save.
  • Valuing every benefit as cash. Fix it by estimating the benefit’s realistic household value and keeping non-cash protections visible.
  • Assuming a visa is administrative paperwork. Fix it by documenting sponsorship, timing, renewal, dependent status and failure consequences before accepting.

Worksheet: the minimum facts to collect

Question U.S. option India option

After completing the worksheet, choose the option that meets your minimum savings and authorization requirements while offering credible growth in the exact role you want. If a key number is unavailable, mark it as unknown and seek that information before treating the comparison as settled.
