Al Jazeera reported that the Makin Island Marine Expeditionary Force was to follow the carrier group. AP described the Makin Island amphibious readiness group as including the USS John P. AP reported that the Roosevelt and Makin Island groups together carried over 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines, characterizing the personnel aboard the ships as roughly 9,000 troops.

Al Jazeera separately reported that the incoming deployment includes F-35 fighters and that roughly 50,000 US service members were already in the region. That existing-force estimate has a different scope from AP’s count of personnel aboard the ships en route. The figures should not be added together or treated as independently verified totals.
Does the deployment mean new US strikes on Iran are imminent?
The reporting does not establish that a decision to launch new strikes has been made. Al Jazeera’s Washington reporter, citing sources inside the Pentagon and White House, described the purpose as keeping military options “on the table” amid a changing conflict and diplomacy. Al Jazeera also attributed to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth the remark that forces were “ready to go” should President Donald Trump order new strikes; the outlet’s report does not provide a direct transcript or date for that remark.

Those statements indicate readiness and an effort to preserve options, not proof of an imminent order. AP likewise framed the deployment in the context of Trump weighing possible new strikes, rather than reporting that strikes had been authorized.

The specific movement details, troop figures and arrival windows in these reports rely on unnamed US officials. As of the October 1 and 2, 2026 reports, no current Pentagon or Navy release confirming this particular deployment schedule was cited. The reported departure and projected force posture should therefore remain attributed to AP and Al Jazeera rather than described as an officially confirmed timetable.

AP noted that the Navy had three carrier strike groups in the Middle East in April 2026, the first such presence since 2003. That earlier deployment provides context for the reported buildup, but does not confirm when the Roosevelt group will arrive or what orders it may receive.
