The buyer’s purchase price and the auction result are reported in US dollars; the rupee figures in the headline are rounded, not exact conversions.
Which painting sold for about Rs 13 crore?
The work was Alderman Merriam’s Shells, a 1951 painting by Chicago artist Gertrude Abercrombie (1909–1977), whom Freeman’s describes as a celebrated Chicago Surrealist. The painting depicts nine shells on a slate-gray surface, including a conical shell suspended against a black wall.
Freeman’s says the work had been out of public view for 75 years. The auction house also describes it as a rare example of Abercrombie painting directly from life and says it offers evidence about how the shell motif developed in her later work; that interpretation is Freeman’s characterization.
How did the buyer find it?
Freeman’s reports that a longtime collector of records and mid-century furniture spotted the painting in a dark hallway corner at a Michigan estate sale in summer 2026. The buyer paid $30, prompted by the “Abercrombie” signature.

The buyer later visited The Whole World Is a Mystery, a Gertrude Abercrombie retrospective at the Milwaukee Art Museum. An archival image in the exhibition catalogue showed the same painting, helping the buyer identify it. Freeman’s says art historian and Abercrombie scholar Dr. Susan Weininger subsequently authenticated the work.
What established the painting’s history?
According to Freeman’s, Abercrombie gave the painting to Dr. John Reynolds, a physician in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1952 in exchange for medical services. It stayed with his family. The auction house reports that it appeared in six solo exhibitions in 1952 and 1953:

The family provenance, archival image and scholar’s authentication helped connect the estate-sale find to the painting’s earlier history.
How much did it sell for, and what does that figure mean?
Freeman’s reported a final price of $1,352,600, including the buyer’s premium, at its Post-War & Contemporary Art sale in New York on October 1, 2026. That is the amount realized, not the hammer price; the reviewed sale information does not state the hammer amount.

| Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| $30 | Buyer’s reported purchase price at the Michigan estate sale, according to Freeman’s. |
| $150,000–$250,000 | Freeman’s pre-sale estimate. |
| $1,352,600 | Freeman’s reported auction price, including buyer’s premium. |
| About Rs 13 crore | NDTV’s rounded conversion of the auction result. |
The sale price including premium was more than five times the estimate’s high end. The bidding opened at $80,000; Freeman’s says five phone bidders and several online bidders competed. The house called the result a new auction record for Abercrombie and said it was the artist’s first work to hammer above $1 million. That hammer threshold is distinct from the $1,352,600 premium-inclusive result.

No. This is one unusually well-documented rediscovery, not evidence that signed paintings found at estate sales generally have significant value. Here, the signature led to a specific archival match, the family history was traced, and a named scholar authenticated the work. A signature alone does not establish an artwork’s authorship, provenance or market price.
