On 13 September 2026, the Royal Navy’s experimental uncrewed underwater vessel XV Excalibur launched and controlled an inert, recoverable U.S. Navy Mk 48 Mod 4 heavyweight torpedo at the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre near Kyle of Lochalsh, Scotland. The three-week trial demonstrated weapon integration on an uncrewed platform—not an operational combat capability.
What happened in the Excalibur torpedo trial?
The Royal Navy said Excalibur fired and controlled the torpedo during a trial at the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre (BUTEC), a test range in northwest Scotland. The weapon was an inert, recoverable version of the Mk 48 Mod 4, described by the Royal Navy as weighing more than 1.5 tonnes and measuring nearly six metres long. The trial lasted three weeks. This was a weapons-integration and launch demonstration, not a live attack with an explosive torpedo. The distinction matters: successfully launching and controlling a test weapon demonstrates that the system can work in a trial setting, but does not establish combat effectiveness or operational readiness.

The official accounts describe the milestone with different scopes. The Royal Navy calls it the first successful torpedo firing by one of its robot submarines. The UK government says it was the first time either the UK or the United States launched a torpedo from an uncrewed undersea vessel rather than a crewed submarine. Those are attributed claims about this specific demonstration; they should not be broadened into a claim that no uncrewed vessel anywhere has ever launched a torpedo. UK government account

U.S. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle called the test “a historic first for allied undersea warfare.” That characterization reflects the significance officials attach to the allied trial; it is not evidence that the platform or weapon pairing has entered service. U.S. Navy account
What did the test demonstrate—and what did it not?
Demonstrated: integration of a U.S. weapon on a British uncrewed vessel
The trial integrated a specialist management system that enabled Excalibur to launch and control the Mk 48. The U.S. Navy said the effort validated the mechanical, electrical and software integration of an American payload onto an allied autonomous vessel. That makes the test a proof of concept for weapon interchangeability: a system designed for one navy’s equipment was integrated with a partner’s uncrewed platform.

Not demonstrated: operational deployment or autonomous targeting
Excalibur remains an experimental demonstrator. When the Royal Navy unveiled it in 2025, it said the vessel would not perform operational duties and was intended to inform future concepts. The September 2026 trial does not change that status, and the public accounts do not establish autonomous target selection, a combat mission, or operational deployment of this weapon-platform combination. Royal Navy trial director Lieutenant Commander David Iwanek said the achievement “paves the way for a step change in underwater lethality.” That is his assessment of the trial’s potential, not a measured result about combat performance.

What is XV Excalibur?
Excalibur is a 12-metre, 19-tonne extra-large uncrewed underwater vessel (XLUUV), built by Plymouth-based MSubs and delivered to the Royal Navy in 2025. Developed under Project Cetus, it is the Navy’s first XLUUV and serves as a testbed for maritime technologies and payloads. Royal Navy platform details
Its role as a testbed is central to understanding the torpedo trial: Excalibur is being used to investigate what future uncrewed underwater systems might do, rather than serving as a deployed submarine. The Mk 48 is described by the UK government as jointly developed by the United States and Australia.

How does the trial fit into AUKUS?
The work, called Project Broadsword / Trial Iron, was conducted under AUKUS Pillar 2, the partnership’s collaboration on advanced capabilities. AUKUS brings together Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The trial involved the Royal Navy, the U.S. Navy, the UK Submarine Delivery Group Autonomy Unit, and industry partners MSubs and QinetiQ; MSubs built Excalibur, while QinetiQ operates the BUTEC range. How is this different from Excalibur’s earlier remote-control demonstration?
In August 2025, during Exercise Talisman Sabre, the Royal Navy reported communicating with and controlling submerged Excalibur in UK waters from an operating centre in Australia, more than 10,000 miles away. That earlier exercise demonstrated remote operation and allied interoperability. It was separate from the 2026 torpedo launch and does not itself show weapon control. Royal Navy exercise account
The distinction is useful: communicating with or remotely controlling an uncrewed vessel is not the same function as integrating, launching and controlling a weapon. The September test addressed the latter in a controlled trial environment.
