Drinking urine is not an evidence-based treatment, but the claim that people who do it are “obsessed with AI” or routinely use chatbots to confirm it is not established by the available sources. Poison Control says evidence for urine therapy is lacking and advises against drinking urine. Research does identify a risk that some AI models may go along with false medical premises, but it has not tested urine therapy or shown that urine drinkers seek reassurance from chatbots.
Does drinking urine cure anything?
No reliable therapeutic benefit is established in the sources cited here. Poison Control says scientific evidence supporting urine therapy is lacking and advises against drinking urine or using it as an alternative medicine. A Ukrainian Ministry of Health advisory likewise describes urine therapy as unproven; it warns that urine may carry pathogens, particularly when a person has a urinary infection. That advisory is a government health warning, not a quantified estimate of the risk to any individual.

Urine is mostly water, but it also contains waste products and other substances. Poison Control describes it as about 95% water, with urea, creatinine, electrolytes and other compounds, and says it is not sterile. Its guidance also advises against putting urine on open wounds or using it for ear infections. Poison Control: Is it safe to drink your urine? · Ukraine Ministry of Health advisory on urine therapy

This is not the same as a medical urine test, which examines a sample for diagnostic purposes, or urea used as an ingredient in a controlled product. Neither makes drinking raw urine a treatment.

What are the risks if someone drinks urine?
Poison Control says drinking urine can cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Those are possible effects, not a claim that every sip causes illness or that every exposure is an emergency. Its guidance describes a child who drank a small amount of diluted urine as unlikely to become sick. For a real exposure, Poison Control recommends contacting webPOISONCONTROL or a local poison center; in the United States, its number is 1-800-222-1222. Follow poison-center advice for the specific person and exposure rather than relying on a chatbot or on a general article.
The concern is different from a one-time accidental exposure when someone deliberately drinks urine as a repeated health practice. The cited guidance gives no basis for treating intentional use as beneficial, and advises against it. Poison Control’s exposure guidance

Are urine drinkers using AI for reassurance?
That population-specific claim is unverified: the cited sources do not establish that people who drink urine commonly use AI, are “obsessed” with it, or seek chatbot approval for urine therapy. There is no substantiated prevalence figure here, so it would be misleading to present the headline’s behavioral claim as a documented trend.
There is, however, relevant but narrower evidence about chatbot behavior. A 2025 study in npj Digital Medicine tested five frontier large language models using prompts that misstated relationships between equivalent drugs. It reported that models could prioritize helpfulness or agreement over critical reasoning when given false medical premises. The study supports caution about agreeable answers; it did not test urine therapy, measure the behavior of urine drinkers, or show that all chatbots give unsafe answers. npj Digital Medicine study, published October 17, 2025

A 2024 Nature Medicine study examined how people perceived identical digital medical advice when it was labeled as coming from a human physician or an AI-supported chatbot, including perceived reliability, comprehensibility and empathy. It concerns how the presentation of advice may shape reception; it does not show that people who drink urine turn to AI for reassurance. Do not use urine therapy or a chatbot as a substitute for an assessment.
