Upload a video selfie to get your Facebook or Instagram account back

Losing access to a Facebook or Instagram account can be stressful, especially if it was hacked, locked after suspicious activity, or disabled during a security review. In some recovery flows, Meta may ask you to upload a short video selfie so it can confirm you are a real person and, in certain cases, match you to photos or activity already associated with the account.

A video selfie is not the same as posting a video publicly. It is submitted inside the account recovery process and is used for identity verification, account protection, and abuse prevention. You may see this option when password resets, two-factor authentication, ID upload, or other recovery methods are not enough to prove ownership.

Understanding how the request appears, what the upload should look like, and what to do if verification fails can improve your chances of getting back in safely. It also helps you avoid scams, fake recovery services, and risky shortcuts that can make a compromised account harder to recover.

When Facebook or Instagram asks for a video selfie

Facebook or Instagram may ask for a video selfie during account recovery when they need extra confidence that a real person is trying to regain access. This usually happens after automated checks cannot confirm ownership from your password, email address, phone number, device, or login history alone. The request can appear inside the Facebook app, Instagram app, mobile browser recovery flow, or Help Center recovery process, depending on the account issue and the information still attached to the account.

You are most likely to see video selfie verification if your account was hacked, locked for suspicious activity, disabled pending review, or protected by security checks after an unusual login attempt. It may also appear when you cannot receive a login code, no longer have access to the email or phone number on the account, or are trying to recover an account from a new device. On Instagram, video selfie prompts are common when recovering accounts that have photos of you, because the system can compare the submitted video with profile photos or posts. On Facebook, identity checks may vary, and some users may be asked for an ID document instead of, or in addition to, a video selfie.

Common situations that trigger the request

  • Hacked account recovery: Someone changed your password, email address, phone number, username, or two-factor authentication settings.
  • Suspicious login protection: Facebook or Instagram detected activity from an unfamiliar location, device, browser, or network.
  • Locked account: The platform temporarily blocked access until you complete a security check.
  • Disabled or restricted account review: You are appealing an enforcement action and the platform needs to confirm who is submitting the request.
  • Lost access to recovery methods: You cannot use the email, phone number, authenticator app, or backup codes connected to the account.
  • Impersonation or identity concerns: The platform needs to check that the person in the recovery flow matches the account owner.

A video selfie request is not the same as posting a video to your profile. You are usually asked to record a short clip while turning your head in different directions so the system can confirm liveness and reduce the chance of someone using a photo, screenshot, or deepfake. The prompt should be part of an official Meta recovery flow, not a request sent by direct message, comment, email attachment, or third-party “recovery agent.” If someone asks you to send a selfie video to them directly, share a code, or pay for account restoration, treat it as a scam.

The option does not appear for every account or every recovery attempt. Meta may offer different verification methods based on the account type, region, age of the account, available profile photos, previous security settings, and what recovery information is still usable. If you do not see a video selfie option, continue with the official recovery choices shown on screen rather than searching for unofficial upload links. In many cases, the video selfie prompt appears only after you select options such as Try another way, No longer have access to these?, My account was hacked, or an appeal path for a disabled account.

What you need before starting account recovery

Before you start Facebook or Instagram account recovery, get your device, contact methods, and identity details ready. Video selfie verification is usually time-sensitive and works best when you complete it in one session. If you switch devices, close the app, lose connection, or cannot receive a security code, you may have to restart the recovery flow or wait before trying again.

Use a phone or tablet with a working front-facing camera, enough battery, and a stable internet connection. Open the official Facebook or Instagram app if possible, because recovery prompts and camera permissions are often smoother there than in a mobile browser. Update the app first, then allow camera access when prompted. Choose a well-lit place where your whole face is visible, remove sunglasses, masks, or heavy face coverings, and avoid strong backlighting from windows or lamps behind you.

Have these items ready

  • Access to your email or phone number: You may need to receive a login code, password reset link, or confirmation message. Check both your inbox and spam folder, and make sure your phone can receive SMS messages.
  • Your account details: Know your username, profile name, linked email address, linked phone number, and any previous passwords you remember. For Instagram, your handle can help you find the correct account. For Facebook, your profile URL or the name shown on your profile may help.
  • A secure device: Use a device you own and trust. Avoid public computers, shared phones, VPN-heavy setups, or browser extensions that may interfere with Meta’s recovery pages.
  • A current app version: Install updates from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Outdated apps can fail to load the video selfie prompt or crash during upload.
  • Time to complete the process: Set aside several uninterrupted minutes. You may be asked to move your head in different directions, hold still, or repeat the recording if the scan is unclear.

If your account was hacked, also prepare a new, unique password before you regain access. Do not reuse a password from another site. If you still have access to the email account connected to Facebook or Instagram, secure that email first by changing its password and turning on two-factor authentication. A compromised email inbox can let an attacker reset your social account again even after you pass video selfie verification.

Be cautious about where you start the recovery process. Use the official app, facebook.com, instagram.com, or links reached through the app’s built-in recovery screens. Do not upload a video selfie through messages, comments, third-party “support” pages, or people claiming they can recover your account for a fee. Meta will not ask you to send a video selfie to a random email address, WhatsApp number, or direct message conversation. If you are unsure, close the page and begin again from the app’s login screen using options such as Forgot password?, Get help logging in, or the hacked account recovery path.

How to upload a video selfie for Facebook

Facebook usually offers video selfie verification inside the recovery flow, not as a separate upload page you can visit directly. Start from the Facebook app or the official recovery page, follow the prompts for a locked, hacked, or disabled account, and choose the option that says you need to confirm your identity. If Facebook decides a video selfie is suitable for your case, you’ll see on-screen instructions asking you to record a short video of your face.

  1. Open the official recovery flow. In the Facebook app, go to the login screen, tap Forgot password? or Find your account, then search by email address, phone number, name, or username. For a hacked account, you can also use Facebook’s hacked account recovery page in a browser.
  2. Select your account. Confirm that the profile shown is yours. If you see multiple accounts with similar names, check the profile photo, email hint, phone number hint, or location details before continuing.
  3. Choose a recovery method. Facebook may first offer codes by email, SMS, WhatsApp, or an authentication app. If you cannot access those methods, look for options such as Try another way, No longer have access to these?, or Need more help?.
  4. Follow the identity check prompts. If video selfie verification is available, Facebook will explain that it needs a short recording to help confirm you are a real person and, in some cases, match you to photos or activity associated with the account.
  5. Allow camera access. Your phone or browser may ask permission for Facebook to use the camera. Approve it for this session, otherwise the recording screen cannot open.
  6. Record the selfie video. Hold the phone at eye level in a well-lit place. Keep your face fully visible, remove sunglasses or face coverings, and follow the prompts to turn your head, look in different directions, or stay within the frame.
  7. Review and submit. If Facebook lets you preview the clip and it is blurry, too dark, or cuts off part of your face, retake it before submitting. Once it looks clear, send it through the recovery screen.

Use the same device and network you normally use for Facebook if possible. A familiar phone, browser, location, and Wi-Fi connection can help Facebook evaluate the recovery request alongside the video selfie. Avoid using a VPN, remote desktop session, public computer, or borrowed device unless you have no other option, because unusual login signals may add friction to the review.

If the camera screen freezes or never loads, close the app and reopen it, update Facebook, or try the recovery flow in a mobile browser such as Chrome or Safari. Make sure camera permission is enabled in your device settings, then restart the phone before trying again. If you are using a browser, clear Facebook cookies or try a private window, but stay on official Facebook domains and do not upload your video to anyone who contacts you through comments, Messenger, email, or third-party “support” pages.

After submission, keep the app installed and check the email address or phone number connected to the recovery attempt. Facebook may send a status update, ask for another step, or provide a reset link if the verification is accepted. Do not repeatedly submit new recovery requests every few minutes; too many attempts can trigger rate limits or make the process take longer.

How to upload a video selfie for Instagram

Instagram may offer video selfie verification when you cannot access your account, when it detects suspicious login activity, or when you appeal certain account restrictions. The option usually appears inside the Instagram app during the recovery flow, so start from a phone you normally use for Instagram if possible. Open Instagram, go to the login screen, enter your username, email, or phone number, then choose Forgot password?, Get help logging in, or Can’t reset your password?, depending on what appears on your device.

Follow the prompts until Instagram asks you to confirm that you own the account. If your account has photos of you, Instagram may show an option such as Take a video selfie or Verify your identity. Tap it, allow camera access, and read the on-screen directions before recording. You will usually be asked to hold your phone at face level and slowly turn your head in different directions so Instagram can check that you are a real person and compare the video to photos on the account.

Steps to complete the Instagram video selfie upload

  1. Use the official Instagram app on iPhone or Android, not a browser or third-party recovery service.
  2. Make sure your face is clearly visible, with good lighting and no heavy shadows, filters, sunglasses, mask, or face covering.
  3. Hold the phone steady and keep your full face inside the outline or frame shown on screen.
  4. Turn your head only as instructed, such as left, right, up, or down, and avoid rushing the movement.
  5. Submit the recording when the app confirms it captured the required angles.
  6. Check the email address linked to the account, and also check spam or junk folders for Instagram’s response.

If Instagram says the video could not be submitted, close and reopen the app, update Instagram, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and try again in a brighter room. Restarting your phone can also help if the camera permission or upload process is stuck. If you are using a VPN, proxy, app cloner, emulator, or modified Instagram app, turn it off and retry from the standard app because unusual device or network signals can interfere with recovery.

After you submit the video selfie, Instagram reviews it to help confirm your identity. The video is used for verification and is not posted to your profile, shown to followers, or added to your feed. Review times vary, but many users receive an email with next steps after Instagram finishes checking the submission. If approved, you may receive a login link, password reset option, or instructions to secure the account. If denied, try again with clearer lighting and a closer match to the photos on your profile, or continue with other recovery options offered in the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens after you submit the video selfie

After you upload the video selfie, Facebook or Instagram uses it to check whether you appear to be the real person who owns or manages the account. The review may compare the movement in the video with profile photos, tagged photos, previous account activity, or other signals available to Meta. The goal is to confirm that a live person is making the recovery request, not someone using a stolen photo, screenshot, mask, or automated tool.

In many cases, you will see an on-screen message confirming that the video was submitted. You may then receive updates by email, SMS, in the app, or through the account recovery flow you used to start the request. Review times vary. Some people receive a response within minutes or hours, while others may need to wait a day or longer, especially if the account was hacked, recently changed, or has limited identifying information on the profile.

Possible results after review

  • Your identity is accepted: Facebook or Instagram may let you reset your password, confirm your email or phone number, remove suspicious login sessions, or return to the account recovery screen with the next step available.
  • More information is requested: You may be asked to try the video selfie again, confirm a device you used before, enter a code sent to your email or phone, or provide another form of verification.
  • The request is declined: If the video is too dark, blurry, incomplete, or does not match enough account information, the platform may reject the attempt and offer another recovery method.
  • No immediate answer appears: The request may still be pending. Avoid submitting repeated videos too quickly, as multiple attempts can sometimes slow the process or trigger temporary limits.

Meta states that video selfies are used for identity verification and are not intended to be posted to your profile, shared with friends, or used as public content. They are generally processed to check liveness and account ownership, and may be deleted after a set period according to Meta’s current policies. You should still treat the upload as sensitive personal information: complete it only inside the official Facebook or Instagram app, website, or recovery page, and never send a video selfie to someone in a direct message, email reply, or third-party “support” form.

If your video selfie is approved, move carefully through the next recovery screens. Choose a new password that you have not used elsewhere, confirm that the recovery email and phone number belong to you, and remove any unfamiliar contact details. If the account was hacked, check whether the attacker added a new email address, phone number, linked account, payment method, or two-factor authentication device. Completing these steps right after approval reduces the chance that the same person can regain access before you finish securing the account.

Troubleshooting failed or unavailable video selfie verification

If your video selfie fails, gets stuck, or does not appear as an option, start with the basics: update the Facebook or Instagram app, restart your phone, and try again on a stable Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. Use the official app rather than a browser, especially for Instagram, because some identity checks are only shown inside the mobile app. If you are using a VPN, private DNS service, ad blocker, or security app that filters traffic, temporarily turn it off and retry from the same country or region where you usually access the account.

Video selfie checks often fail because the recording does not clearly match the on-screen instructions. Move to a well-lit place, remove sunglasses, masks, hats, or heavy filters, and hold the phone at eye level. Keep your full face inside the frame, turn your head only when prompted, and avoid uploading a saved video or screen recording. Meta’s systems are designed to capture a live selfie video, so edited clips, reused videos, or recordings from another device will usually be rejected.

If the video selfie option does not appear

Not every recovery flow offers video selfie verification. The option may depend on the account type, the reason access was blocked, whether your account has photos of you, and what recovery signals Meta has available. If you only see email, SMS, WhatsApp, security key, trusted device, or ID upload options, complete the strongest option available. Check both the Facebook and Instagram apps if the accounts are linked through Accounts Center, because one app may surface recovery steps that the other does not.

  • Try from a trusted device: Use a phone, tablet, or computer you have used to sign in before, instead of a new device.
  • Use your usual network: Recover from your home Wi-Fi or regular mobile carrier when possible.
  • Check contact details: If you can access recovery email or phone options, use them before repeating failed selfie attempts.
  • Wait before retrying: Too many attempts in a short time can temporarily limit recovery tools. Waiting 24 to 48 hours may help.
  • Look for account-specific prompts: Open notifications, emails from Meta, and in-app alerts, but avoid links from suspicious messages.

Common upload problems and fixes

Problem What to try
Camera will not open Enable camera permission for Facebook or Instagram in your phone settings, then close and reopen the app.
Upload freezes or fails Switch networks, free up storage, disable VPN tools, and update the app before recording again.
Selfie rejected Record in brighter light, remove face coverings, follow the movement prompts slowly, and make sure your face fills the frame.
No recovery options work Use the official hacked account or login help flow again from a trusted device, and choose any available ID or contact verification route.

Be careful if you search the web for help after a failed verification. Do not pay anyone who claims they can bypass Meta’s review, generate a recovery code, or “unlock” the account through an employee contact. Do not send your video selfie, ID document, password, two-factor codes, or backup codes to a third party. Real recovery happens through Facebook, Instagram, or Meta support flows, and legitimate prompts appear in the app, on official Meta domains, or in messages that match the action you requested.

How to secure your account after getting access back

After Facebook or Instagram lets you back in, treat the account as still at risk until you have checked every security setting. A hacked account may still have the attacker’s email address, phone number, logged-in device, connected app, or payment method attached to it. Start from the official app or website only, then move through the account settings carefully before posting, messaging, or changing public profile details.
