UPI vs. Bank Transfer for Sending Money from India to Nepal (2026 Guide)

Short answer: Use UPI–NPI when both the Indian sender’s app or bank and the Nepal recipient’s institution support the new cross-border service, the recipient is happy to receive through a mobile number or virtual payment address (VPA), and the on-screen total is acceptable. Use the Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) when you need a bank-account credit or cash pickup, when UPI–NPI is unavailable, or when the recipient needs the established Nepal SBI Bank and Prabhu Money Transfer payout process. Both routes publish a ceiling of INR 200,000 per transaction for eligible account-based users, but eligibility, payout, charges and the amount received can differ substantially.

UPI or bank transfer: the practical choice

India-to-Nepal person-to-person transfers now have two distinct routes:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • UPI–NPI: a cross-border connection between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI). It began in June 2026 and is available only through participating institutions and apps.
  • NEFT/Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF): the older, one-way India-to-Nepal service. An Indian bank sends the money through NEFT to a designated State Bank of India process; Nepal SBI Bank (NSBL) then credits an NSBL account or arranges cash payment through authorized Prabhu Money Transfer outlets.

The fastest way to choose is to check four things in order: whether both sides are enabled, how the recipient wants to collect the money, whether the amount fits the applicable limit, and the final debit and Nepalese-rupee amount shown before authorization. Do not assume that an app transfer is always cheaper or that a bank transfer is always slower; provider fees and payout choices determine the result.

Side-by-side comparison

Question UPI–NPI NEFT/INRF
Availability Live from June 2026 through selected banks and non-bank payment apps. The current participant list can change. Available through an NEFT-enabled Indian bank; the recipient-side process uses NSBL.
Recipient details Mobile number or VPA, subject to the Nepal institution’s support. NSBL account details for account credit, or beneficiary details for cash payout.
Published limit Up to INR 200,000 per India-to-Nepal transaction, according to Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL). Account-holder sender: up to INR 200,000 per transaction. Walk-in/non-customer: INR 50,000 per transaction and 12 such remittances per year, under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) FAQ.
Payout Digital receipt through the participating Nepal institution; the exact credit method is displayed by the enabled service. NSBL account credit, or cash collection through an authorized Prabhu Money Transfer outlet.
Speed Operators describe the linkage as real-time, but availability and exception handling depend on the participating providers. Moves through NEFT, SBI and NSBL processing. Timing can vary with bank hours, holidays, compliance checks and payout choice.
Public fee information Launch material calls it low-cost but does not publish one universal sender tariff or exchange-rate formula. RBI and NSBL publish fee examples and schedules, but the amount depends on transfer size, sender type and beneficiary payout.
Best fit Supported users who want a mobile-based transfer without exchanging bank-account numbers. Recipients who need a bank credit or cash pickup, or users without UPI–NPI access.

How UPI–NPI works

NPCI International and NCHL announced the linkage in Kathmandu on June 9, 2026. The Government of India’s announcement states that the mechanism was officially launched on June 6, 2026, with the announcement dated June 11. It connects UPI in India with NPI in Nepal for person-to-person payments.

Instead of giving the sender a Nepal bank-account number, the recipient can generally be identified by a mobile number or VPA. Both people must give one-time consent to cross-border transfers, and the receiving institution must be part of the live service. A familiar UPI app is not automatically enabled: the sender’s bank or non-bank TPAP app, the recipient’s Nepal institution and the specific corridor must all support the transaction.

What you need before starting

  • An account or wallet relationship with an Indian bank or payment app that has enabled UPI–NPI transfers.
  • A Nepal recipient whose mobile number or VPA is registered for an enabled NPI participant.
  • Completed cross-border consent on both sides, if the providers request it.
  • Sufficient Indian-rupee balance and a phone capable of authenticating the payment.
  • The recipient’s correct name and identifier; verify the confirmation screen before entering the UPI PIN.

Typical UPI–NPI procedure

  1. Open the enabled bank app or non-bank TPAP app and choose its international, cross-border or Nepal transfer option. Labels differ by provider.
  2. Select Nepal as the destination and enter the recipient’s supported mobile number or VPA.
  3. Review the displayed recipient name and any institution information. Stop if the details do not match.
  4. Enter the amount in Indian rupees or the available currency field. The app should show the Nepalese-rupee amount, exchange conversion and applicable charge before approval.
  5. Confirm the one-time cross-border consent if it appears, then authorize with the UPI PIN or the app’s required authentication.
  6. Save the transaction reference and ask the recipient to confirm credit. A real-time description does not eliminate the possibility of a provider outage or a compliance hold.

Limit and availability caveats

NCHL lists a maximum of INR 200,000 per India-to-Nepal UPI–NPI transaction. A particular bank or app can impose a lower internal limit, a daily cap or a user-specific restriction. The list of participating institutions is not permanent, so check the provider’s current in-app eligibility immediately before sending. The launch pages do not establish that every UPI app can send to every Nepal recipient.

The service is for person-to-person transfers. Do not confuse it with Nepal’s 2024 UPI acceptance partnership for merchant QR payments; paying a shop’s QR code and sending money to an individual are separate use cases.

How the NEFT/Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility works

RBI describes INRF as a one-way India-to-Nepal facility launched in May 2008 and enhanced in August 2021. The Indian sender’s bank sends an NEFT remittance to a designated SBI branch. The amount is electronically relayed to NSBL, which either posts it to an NSBL beneficiary account or makes it available as cash through an authorized Prabhu Money Transfer outlet.

Account-holder route

An individual with an account at an NEFT-enabled Indian bank can remit up to INR 200,000 per transaction. The RBI FAQ states no annual transaction-count limit for this category. The sender generally does not need to submit extra identification documents for the remittance, but the bank will still require accurate beneficiary information and may apply its normal customer and compliance checks.

  1. Ask the Indian bank for its current Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility procedure and charges. The exact menu may be in internet banking, mobile banking or a branch form.
  2. Choose whether the beneficiary will receive an NSBL account credit or cash through an authorized Prabhu Money Transfer outlet.
  3. Provide the beneficiary’s name, address and telephone or mobile number. For an account credit, enter the NSBL account information exactly as supplied by the recipient.
  4. Enter the amount, review the applicable fee and exchange conversion, and submit the NEFT instruction.
  5. Keep the UTR and bank confirmation. Give the UTR to the recipient when the bank indicates that the remittance has reached the Nepal-side process.

Walk-in or non-customer route

A person without an account at the sending bank can use the walk-in facility, subject to the bank offering it. RBI limits each remittance to INR 50,000 and limits this category to 12 remittances in a calendar year. The sender must provide proof of identity. These limits are separate from the INR 200,000-per-transaction account-holder limit.

  1. Confirm with the branch that it accepts an INRF walk-in remittance and ask which identity document is accepted.
  2. Supply the beneficiary’s name, address and telephone or mobile number, plus the requested payout type.
  3. Pay the remittance and charges at the branch, then collect the receipt and UTR.
  4. Send the UTR and collection instructions to the Nepal beneficiary. A cash beneficiary must present the UTR and photo identification at the authorized outlet.

Cash collection rules

Cash payout is useful when the recipient does not hold an NSBL account, but it adds a physical collection step. The beneficiary needs the UTR and photo identity. RBI says that if cash is not collected within one week, return arrangements are made. Confirm the outlet’s hours and any local identification requirements before promising a pickup time.

Limits, fees and the amount the recipient receives

Route and sender type Published limit Published charge evidence What to verify
UPI–NPI Up to INR 200,000 per transaction (NCHL service page). Launch information describes the service as low-cost, but the reviewed official pages do not provide a complete public sender tariff or universal exchange-rate formula. Supported app and recipient, conversion rate, fee, final INR debit and final NPR credit on the confirmation screen.
INRF account holder Up to INR 200,000 per transaction; RBI states no annual count limit. For transfers up to INR 50,000, RBI says the originating bank may charge up to INR 5 and SBI charges INR 20. The FAQ states there is no additional NSBL beneficiary-credit charge for an NSBL account under that schedule. For amounts above INR 50,000, use the current SBI and sending-bank schedule rather than extrapolating the small-transfer example.
INRF walk-in/non-customer Up to INR 50,000 per remittance and 12 per year. For up to INR 50,000, RBI lists up to INR 5 from the originating bank and INR 20 from SBI. Where there is no NSBL account, the FAQ lists an additional INR 50 for amounts up to INR 5,000 or INR 75 above INR 5,000. Identity document, outlet payout fee and the one-week collection condition.

The RBI FAQ carrying these INRF figures was updated September 27, 2023. NSBL’s current SBI Nepal Express Remit description gives a more detailed schedule: an NSBL-account beneficiary is charged INR 1 per INR 1,000 or part thereof, with a minimum of INR 75 and a maximum of INR 1,500; a non-NSBL beneficiary is charged INR 1.50 per INR 1,000, with a minimum of INR 150 and a maximum of INR 3,000, plus NPR 100 and up to NPR 10 in IPS charges for a non-account beneficiary. The same NSBL page also shows scheme tables in which rates vary by amount and pensioner status.

Those figures are not interchangeable. RBI’s FAQ, the sending bank’s tariff, NSBL’s schedule and the selected payout channel may display different components. Before authorizing either route, compare:

  • the exact Indian-rupee debit;
  • the separate service fee, if any;
  • the exchange rate used for the conversion;
  • the Nepalese-rupee amount the recipient will actually receive; and
  • any cash-payout or local collection charge.

A transfer with a lower visible fee can still deliver less if its exchange rate is weaker. UPI–NPI’s public launch material does not settle a single rate or tariff for every participating provider, so the app’s final confirmation is the authoritative figure for that transaction.

Timing, failed payments and complaints

When UPI–NPI is delayed

UPI–NPI operators describe the service as real-time. In practice, a payment can remain pending during an outage, maintenance window, risk review or recipient-institution problem. Do not send a second payment until the first transaction’s status is resolved. Save the transaction reference, screenshot the status and ask the recipient to check the receiving institution rather than relying only on an SMS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the payment is debited but not credited, use the app’s transaction-help or dispute option first. The sender’s provider can trace the cross-border reference and confirm whether the transaction was completed, reversed or held. A recipient should not pay a third party to “release” a pending transfer.

When INRF is delayed or not credited

INRF passes through the originating bank, SBI and NSBL, so a delay can occur at more than one stage. Check the NEFT status with the originating bank and provide the UTR. For a non-credit or delay complaint, RBI’s FAQ directs customers to the originating bank’s or SBI’s NEFT Customer Facilitation Centre. If the issue remains unresolved, the FAQ also identifies RBI’s NEFT help desk as an escalation point.

For cash payout, first confirm that the beneficiary used the correct UTR and photo identity and went to an authorized Prabhu outlet. If the money is not collected within one week, return arrangements may begin; contact the sending bank before assuming the funds are lost.

Which route should you use?

Choose UPI–NPI when

  • Both the Indian sender and Nepal recipient are confirmed as participants.
  • The recipient can use a supported mobile number or VPA and does not need cash.
  • You value a digital, app-based process and the displayed NPR amount is satisfactory.
  • The transfer is within the provider’s own limit and you can tolerate app-based exception handling.

Choose INRF when

  • The recipient needs an NSBL account credit or cash pickup through Prabhu.
  • The sender’s usual UPI app is not enabled for Nepal, or the recipient’s institution is not participating.
  • You need the established UTR-based process and bank facilitation centres for tracing a delayed payment.
  • You are a walk-in sender who cannot use an Indian bank account, and the amount is within INR 50,000 and the 12-per-year cap.

Use this decision sequence

  1. Check live eligibility. Confirm the sender app or bank and the recipient institution support the same route today.
  2. Confirm the payout. Pick UPI–NPI for supported digital receipt; pick INRF for NSBL credit or cash collection.
  3. Check the cap. Apply the INR 200,000 ceiling only where the sender category and provider permit it; apply the lower walk-in limits when relevant.
  4. Compare net value. Record the final Indian debit and Nepalese-rupee credit, not just the headline fee.
  5. Plan recovery. Keep the UPI reference or INRF UTR and know which institution will handle a complaint.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every UPI app works: cross-border access is restricted to participating institutions and may differ by recipient.
  • Using a merchant QR flow for a personal transfer: Nepal’s merchant-acceptance arrangement is not the same as the 2026 P2P linkage.
  • Sending without checking the recipient name: a correct-looking mobile number or VPA can still point to the wrong person.
  • Comparing only visible fees: exchange-rate spread and payout charges affect the final amount.
  • Giving the recipient no reference: UPI transaction references and INRF UTRs are essential for status checks.
  • Ignoring changing tariffs: the RBI FAQ is dated 2023, while provider schedules and participant lists can change; verify them immediately before sending.
  • Promising instant cash: INRF cash pickup depends on the Nepal-side processing step and outlet availability, even when the NEFT instruction is accepted.

Safety checklist before you authorize

  • Use only the official bank or payment app and an authorized cash-payout outlet.
  • Confirm the beneficiary’s full name, mobile number or VPA and, for INRF, account or payout details through a separate trusted channel.
  • Never disclose a UPI PIN, one-time password or banking password to the recipient, an outlet caller or someone claiming to be support.
  • Read the conversion rate, charges, final debit and final NPR amount on the last confirmation screen.
  • Keep the receipt, UPI reference or UTR until the recipient confirms the money is available.
  • For a failed or pending transaction, use the provider’s dispute process; do not pay an unsolicited “release” or “refund” fee.

Bottom line

UPI–NPI is the more convenient option when both institutions are enabled and the recipient wants a digital transfer identified by a mobile number or VPA. INRF remains the more broadly practical fallback when UPI–NPI is unavailable or when the recipient needs an NSBL account credit or cash pickup. The published INR 200,000 ceiling applies to both routes in their eligible account-based forms, but walk-in INRF users face a INR 50,000 cap and 12-remittance annual limit. Decide using live eligibility, payout method and the final amount received—not the label “UPI” or “bank transfer” alone.
