UPI Payment Failed but Money Was Debited: What to Do and How to Get a Refund

If a domestic Indian UPI payment shows Failed but your bank account was debited, do not pay again immediately. First save the transaction ID or RRN, amount, date, beneficiary or merchant details, and the status shown in your UPI app. Raise a complaint in the app and contact the bank holding the debited account. A failed person-to-person transfer should normally auto-reverse by T+1 day; a merchant payment debited without merchant confirmation has a T+5-day reversal window. RBI’s framework provides ₹100 per day compensation for delay beyond the applicable deadline.

The action changes if the app says Pending, if this was a merchant purchase rather than a transfer, or if you did not authorize the debit. The guide below separates those cases and gives the escalation path when the money does not return.

Do these checks before requesting a refund

  1. Open the transaction details in your UPI app. Confirm whether the status is Failed, Pending, Successful or something similar. A failed transfer and a pending transfer have different handling and time expectations.
  2. Record the identifiers. Write down the transaction ID or RRN, transaction date and time, exact amount, beneficiary or merchant name, and the bank account that was debited. Save the status screen and any in-app complaint number.
  3. Check your bank statement or SMS. Confirm that the debit is actually posted, rather than a temporary hold or an app display error. Do not delete the debit alert until the case is closed.
  4. Raise the issue in the UPI app. Use the transaction’s help, dispute or complaint option and select the closest reason, such as debit without credit or failed payment. Keep the generated complaint reference.
  5. Contact the bank that holds the debited account. Give the bank the RRN, amount, date, app status and complaint reference. NPCI’s FAQ advises contacting the bank when a refund does not reverse immediately; its guidance specifically says to contact bank support if the refund has not arrived within one hour. That one-hour point is a prompt to seek a trace, not the final RBI reversal deadline.
  6. Do not make a second payment solely because the first screen looks confusing. Check the final status and, for a pending transaction, ask the bank or app to trace it before trying again.

App menus differ by bank and third-party UPI provider, so there is no single button sequence that applies everywhere. Use the transaction-specific help route shown in your own app and the bank’s official support channel.

Know which deadline applies

RBI’s failed-transaction framework uses T for the transaction date. It covers domestic transactions where both the originator and beneficiary are in India. The deadline depends on whether money was sent to another account or used to pay a merchant.

Situation Required reversal timing Compensation for delay
Domestic UPI transfer: payer debited, beneficiary not credited Auto-reversal by the beneficiary bank no later than T+1 day ₹100 per day beyond T+1, under RBI’s framework
UPI merchant payment: account debited, but confirmation is not received at the merchant location Auto-reversal within T+5 days ₹100 per day beyond T+5, under RBI’s framework

The ₹100 figure is a daily compensation amount for delay beyond the applicable turnaround time, not a replacement for the amount you paid. RBI’s framework says the compensation is to be credited automatically. If the deadline has passed, ask the bank to confirm both the reversal and any compensation due under the framework; do not assume that a support agent’s informal estimate replaces the regulatory timeline.

Failed transfer: payer debited, beneficiary not credited

This is the usual person-to-person or account-transfer case. If your account is debited but the recipient has not received the money and the transaction is recorded as failed, the beneficiary bank should auto-reverse the debit by T+1 day. The reversal may appear as a separate credit or as a corrected entry in your statement.

What to send the bank

  • Transaction ID or RRN and the transaction date.
  • Amount and the recipient’s UPI ID or account details as displayed in the app.
  • A screenshot or text showing the failed status.
  • Your bank statement or debit alert.
  • The UPI-app complaint number and the bank’s acknowledgment number.

Ask the bank to trace the transaction across the UPI switch and the beneficiary bank, and to confirm the expected reversal date. A failed label is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove that reconciliation between the banks has finished.

What a normal resolution may look like

The recipient may see no credit while your account shows a debit. The beneficiary bank and your bank then reconcile the message, and your bank posts a reversal. The credit can have a different narration from the original debit, so compare the amount, date and RRN rather than looking only for the word “refund.” If the recipient later reports a credit, keep both records because the original debit and reversal still need to balance in your statement.

Merchant payment: debit made but the shop did not receive confirmation

A payment at a shop, website or other merchant is a separate RBI category. If your account was debited but the merchant’s system did not receive confirmation, the applicable auto-reversal period is T+5 days, not T+1. Keep the merchant name, order or invoice reference if one exists, and the UPI transaction details.

Before paying again

  • Ask the merchant whether its payment status is failed, pending or successful.
  • Compare the merchant’s reference with the RRN in your app; a mismatch can indicate that the merchant is checking a different attempt.
  • If the merchant has no confirmation, open the dispute from the original transaction rather than starting a new dispute for a second payment.

If you must complete the purchase urgently, make a new payment only after recording the first attempt and understanding that two successful payments could require a separate merchant refund. Do not treat a merchant’s verbal assurance as proof that the first debit has been reversed; check your bank statement.

If both attempts eventually succeed

Save the RRNs for both payments and ask the merchant to refund the duplicate amount using the merchant’s normal refund process. Tell the bank that this is a duplicate successful payment, not a failed debit, and provide both references. Do not cancel or dispute the wrong transaction. The original T+5 rule concerns a debit without merchant confirmation; once the merchant confirms two successful payments, the resolution may involve a merchant-initiated refund.

Pending is not the same as failed

NPCI explains that a transaction can remain pending when confirmation is delayed at the beneficiary-bank end. In that state, the payment may still complete. NPCI’s FAQ says the amount will reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes its daily settlements. This is guidance for a pending transfer, not the RBI TAT for a failed debit.

How to handle a pending transaction

  1. Leave the transaction open in the app and note the pending status, RRN and time.
  2. Ask the recipient or merchant to check its side without assuming that no notification means no credit.
  3. Use the app’s complaint or trace option if the status remains pending, and give the bank the RRN.
  4. Do not submit a stop-payment request. NPCI says a payment cannot be stopped after it has been initiated.
  5. Do not pay again until the bank or app has traced the first attempt, unless you accept the risk of two successful debits.

If the status later changes to failed, apply the T+1 transfer or T+5 merchant rule that matches the transaction type. If it changes to successful, resolve any duplicate-payment issue with the recipient, merchant and bank using the original references.

How to raise a complaint that can be traced

Start with the UPI app because it has the transaction record and can route a dispute to the relevant payment member. The exact labels vary, but the useful information is consistent.

In the UPI app

  1. Open the transaction history and select the disputed payment.
  2. Choose the help, report-problem or dispute action attached to that transaction.
  3. Select the reason that describes a debit without a corresponding credit or confirmation.
  4. Enter the amount, date and a short description. Include whether the recipient or merchant received anything.
  5. Submit and save the complaint number, screen or email acknowledgment.

Do not open several complaints for the same RRN unless the first case is closed incorrectly. Multiple references can make follow-up harder; quote the existing reference when contacting the bank.

A useful message for bank support

State the facts in one sentence: “My UPI RRN is [number], dated [date], for ₹[amount]. The app shows [failed or pending], my account is debited, and the beneficiary or merchant has not received confirmation.” Then ask the bank to identify the transaction state, provide a service-request number, confirm the applicable T+1 or T+5 date, and explain how any delayed compensation will be credited. This gives the agent the information needed to search the payment record instead of treating the call as a generic balance query.

With the bank

Use the bank’s official phone number, secure message facility, branch or other authenticated channel. State that this is a UPI failed-transaction debit and provide the RRN first. Ask for a service-request number and the expected date for reversal under the applicable TAT. If the support agent says the transaction is still being reconciled, ask whether the record is failed or pending and request a trace rather than accepting a generic “wait” instruction.

Keep an evidence file

  • Transaction ID/RRN.
  • Transaction date and time.
  • Amount.
  • Beneficiary or merchant information.
  • UPI-app status and screenshots.
  • Bank-statement entry or debit alert.
  • UPI complaint number.
  • Bank complaint acknowledgment and every follow-up date.

The official NPCI complaint process asks for transaction date, transaction number or RRN, account details and amount. If you share screenshots publicly while seeking help, redact account numbers, mobile numbers, QR codes and other information that could expose your account.

What compensation means when the reversal is late

For the domestic transaction categories covered by RBI’s framework, delay beyond T+1 or T+5 attracts ₹100 per day. The applicable category is determined by the transaction type, not by the fact that the app simply says “failed.” A transfer to another person is not treated like a merchant payment.

The framework provides for automatic credit of compensation. Keep the reversal date and the date on which you first complained, then ask the bank to verify the calculation if the deadline was exceeded. The framework cited here dates from September 20, 2019; check the current rule and scheme eligibility if your transaction falls outside the domestic categories described above.

How to count the delay

Use the transaction date as T and compare the actual reversal date with the deadline for the correct category. For example, a failed domestic transfer is measured against T+1, while a merchant debit without confirmation is measured against T+5. Ask the bank to show the dates it used if its calculation differs from yours. Compensation is separate from the principal amount, so a timely reversal of the debit does not erase a qualifying delay that occurred before the reversal.

Escalate when the bank does not resolve it

NPCI complaint route

If the app and bank have not resolved the debit, use NPCI’s official complaint portal with the transaction date, RRN, account details and amount. The portal can route the complaint to the relevant member, but the bank or other member institution remains responsible for resolving the transaction. Keep the NPCI complaint reference and attach the bank’s earlier acknowledgment where the form allows it.

RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme

For an eligible complaint against a regulated entity, RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme may be available when the entity rejects the complaint or does not reply within 30 days. Submit the earlier complaint details, dates, acknowledgments, transaction records and the relief you are seeking. Ombudsman eligibility is not automatic for every payment dispute, so follow the scheme’s current conditions and use the bank’s final response, if any, in the submission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Escalation works best as a documented sequence: UPI-app complaint, bank complaint, NPCI routing where needed, then Ombudsman recourse after the 30-day no-response or rejection condition is met.

If you did not authorize the debit

An unidentified or fraudulent debit is urgent and is not a routine failed-payment refund. Contact the bank immediately through its official channel and report it as unauthorized. NPCI directs complaints about fraudulent or unidentified transactions to the bank.

Common mistakes that delay resolution

Calling a pending payment failed

Pending means the beneficiary-bank confirmation is delayed; it can still complete. Record it and seek a trace rather than applying the failed-payment deadline prematurely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the wrong deadline

T+1 applies to a domestic transfer where the beneficiary is not credited. T+5 applies to a merchant debit without confirmation at the merchant location. Choosing the wrong category can produce an incorrect escalation request.

Relying only on the app’s notification

The app status and the bank ledger can update at different times. Keep the statement entry and ask the bank to reconcile the RRN.

Opening a new payment before tracing the first

A second attempt can create two successful debits. Confirm the first attempt’s final status with the bank or merchant before repeating it.

Posting unredacted evidence online

Screenshots can contain account information, mobile numbers or QR data. Redact those details and give full information only through an authenticated bank or official complaint channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scope of these rules

The RBI turnaround times described here are for the domestic framework in which both the originator and beneficiary are in India. They should not be applied automatically to cross-border payments, unrelated payment systems or a different transaction type. Your bank can identify the governing category when you provide the RRN.

The practical sequence is therefore: distinguish failed from pending, identify transfer versus merchant payment, preserve the RRN and debit evidence, complain in the UPI app and to the debited-account bank, wait for the applicable T+1 or T+5 reversal window, and escalate with the recorded references if the bank does not resolve the case.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a failed UPI payment take to refund?

For a domestic transfer where your account is debited but the beneficiary is not credited, RBI’s framework requires auto-reversal by T+1 day. For a merchant payment debited without confirmation at the merchant location, the period is T+5 days. NPCI also advises contacting your bank if the amount has not reversed within one hour, but that is an early support prompt, not the final reversal deadline.

What should I do if UPI says pending and my account is debited?

Do not assume it has failed or immediately pay again. Save the RRN, check with the recipient or merchant, and raise a trace through the app and your bank. NPCI says a pending transfer may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes daily settlements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will I automatically receive ₹100 per day for a late UPI reversal?

RBI’s framework provides ₹100 per day for delay beyond the applicable T+1 or T+5 turnaround time in the covered domestic categories, and says compensation is to be credited automatically. Ask the bank to verify the calculation if the deadline was exceeded.

Can I cancel a UPI payment after starting it?

No. NPCI says a payment cannot be stopped after it has been initiated. If you did not authorize the debit, report it immediately to your bank as an unauthorized or fraudulent transaction instead of requesting routine stop-payment treatment.

Who should I contact first for a failed UPI debit?

Raise the issue against the transaction in your UPI app and contact the bank holding the debited account. Give both channels the RRN, date, amount, status and beneficiary or merchant details, and save every complaint reference.

What if the merchant asks me to pay again?

First ask the merchant whether the original attempt is failed, pending or successful and compare its reference with your RRN. If you make a second payment, record the first attempt; two successful payments may require a separate merchant refund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When can I approach the RBI Ombudsman?

For an eligible complaint against a regulated entity, the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme may apply if the entity rejects the complaint or gives no reply within 30 days. Keep the bank complaint, dates, acknowledgments and transaction evidence for the submission.

Is a failed UPI debit covered if one party is outside India?

The RBI turnaround times described here apply to the domestic framework where both originator and beneficiary are in India. Cross-border or other payment types may have different rules, so ask your bank to identify the applicable category.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Save the RRN and debit proof, distinguish failed from pending, and identify transfer versus merchant payment. Complain in the UPI app and to the debited-account bank. Expect T+1 for a failed domestic transfer or T+5 for a merchant debit without confirmation, with ₹100 per day for qualifying delay. Escalate through NPCI and, where eligible after 30 days, the RBI Ombudsman. Report any unauthorized debit to your bank immediately.
