Choose regular UPI for larger payments, amounts above Lite’s cap, or whenever you want money taken directly from your bank account. The key current rule is the Reserve Bank of India’s enhanced UPI Lite limit of ₹1,000 per transaction and ₹5,000 total, updated on December 4, 2024. Some app FAQs still show older figures, so check the limit displayed in your own app and bank account.
UPI Lite and regular UPI: the decision in one minute
UPI Lite is an opt-in, small-value payment balance associated with a UPI app and a linked bank account. You add money to Lite in advance, then payments draw from that balance. A Lite payment does not ask for your UPI PIN or another additional-factor authentication step each time.

Regular UPI is the standard account-to-account flow. Each payment is authorised against the linked bank account, normally with the UPI PIN, and the ordinary National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) ceiling is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Your bank or app can set a lower operational limit, and selected categories have higher ceilings.
| Question | UPI Lite | Regular UPI |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the payment money come from? | A separate, prefunded Lite balance linked to your bank account | Directly from the linked bank account |
| Current RBI per-payment framework | Up to ₹1,000 | Normally up to ₹1 lakh under NPCI’s FAQ; category, bank and app limits may differ |
| Current Lite total limit | Up to ₹5,000 under the RBI framework; the app may show its own available amount | No equivalent Lite wallet cap; the bank/app applies account and transaction limits |
| Authentication at payment | No UPI PIN or additional-factor authentication for each Lite payment | Normally UPI PIN or the authentication method required by your bank/app |
| Top-up | Online and authenticated; replenishes the prefunded balance | No separate wallet top-up; the account is debited when you pay |
| Best fit | Repeated small purchases where speed and fewer PIN prompts matter | Large, occasional or direct-from-account payments |
Current UPI Lite limits—and why some official pages disagree
RBI’s enhanced framework
The RBI framework updated December 4, 2024 sets UPI Lite at ₹1,000 for a single transaction and ₹5,000 total. Replenishment of used capacity is permitted only online and with additional-factor authentication. These are the current framework figures to use when assessing whether a payment fits Lite.

The ₹5,000 figure is the framework’s total Lite limit. Apps can present it as a maximum balance, available balance, or a combination of balance and usage indicators. Read the wording shown in your app rather than assuming that “daily spend,” “maximum balance” and “total limit” mean exactly the same thing.
Older BHIM and NPCI figures remain published
BHIM’s FAQ still describes Lite as ₹200 per transaction, ₹4,000 cumulative daily use and a ₹2,000 maximum balance. An NPCI product booklet also displays older ₹200 and ₹2,000 values. Those documents conflict with the RBI’s later enhanced framework; they should not be treated as the current universal cap.
Implementation can be staggered. Before making a payment, open your app’s UPI Lite information or setup screen and note the transaction and balance limits it actually offers. If the app still shows an older ceiling, that is the effective limit for that account until the bank and app expose the enhanced framework.
Regular UPI’s ceiling
NPCI’s FAQ states that the normal UPI transaction limit is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Certain named categories can have higher limits, while an individual bank or app may impose a lower daily, per-transaction or risk-based ceiling. A failed payment near ₹1 lakh is therefore not proof that UPI itself is unavailable; check the bank’s published limit and the app’s error message.
How UPI Lite works
1. You create a prefunded balance
When you opt in, the app moves an amount you approve from the linked bank account into the Lite balance. The balance is stored for payment use, is associated with that app and account, and is non-interest-bearing. It is not a second bank account and does not earn interest while it sits in Lite.

2. A Lite payment skips the per-payment UPI PIN
For a qualifying payment, the app debits the Lite balance without asking you to enter the UPI PIN each time. NPCI’s original circular states: “The UPI Lite transactions shall be offered without AFA i.e. UPI PIN.” Here, AFA means additional-factor authentication. This removes a step for small purchases but does not remove the need to authenticate when money is added to Lite.
3. Replenishment is online and authenticated
Once the balance is low or capacity has been used, adding more money requires an online transaction and additional-factor authentication. Lite therefore does not provide unlimited PIN-free spending: the prefunded amount and the RBI limits remain the boundaries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. “Offline” has a specific, limited meaning
RBI’s framework uses offline in a qualified sense. A Lite payment can be made without an additional-factor check at the moment of payment, and transaction alerts are not sent in real time. RBI’s definition of an offline transaction is one that does not require internet or telecom connectivity to take effect. However, app implementations and circumstances vary. Do not assume every Lite payment will complete without connectivity, and do not assume a top-up can work offline; replenishment is online and authenticated.
5. Refunds and credits go back online
NPCI’s original Lite circular says refunds and other credits are processed online to the linked bank account. That means a reversal does not necessarily appear as an instant increase in the on-device Lite balance.
Fees: what users should expect
BHIM says it does not charge users for transacting in BHIM and advises users to ask their bank about any charges. NPCI’s guidance says customers and PPI holders are not charged for UPI transactions involving PPI on UPI. Together, these statements support a practical conclusion: the cited UPI payment flows are not intended to carry a customer transaction fee.

That does not rule out every possible cost around a bank account or mobile service. Check your bank’s schedule for account or ancillary charges, and check your telecom provider’s terms for items such as SMS fees. A fee shown by your bank or app is a separate question from the UPI payment rail itself.

When UPI Lite is the better choice
Choose Lite for repeated small purchases
- You make many low-value payments during the day, such as snacks, local transport, quick-service purchases or small household items.
- You want to avoid entering a UPI PIN for every qualifying payment.
- You are comfortable setting aside money in a non-interest-bearing balance.
- Your app displays a Lite limit that covers the amounts you normally pay.
The benefit is operational: fewer authentication prompts and a balance designed for small transactions. It is not a way to raise your bank account’s UPI limit.
Choose regular UPI for larger or direct-account payments
- The amount exceeds Lite’s ₹1,000 RBI per-payment framework, or your app exposes a lower cap.
- You need to pay a bill, merchant or person from the full linked-account balance.
- You do not want to maintain a separate prefunded balance.
- You need a payment record and confirmation flow tied directly to the bank-account transaction.
Regular UPI is also the straightforward fallback when Lite is unavailable, disabled on your account or limited by the app’s current rollout.
How to enable, use and disable UPI Lite
Labels differ between apps and banks, so the exact menu path is not universal. The following is the normal sequence; follow the wording shown in your app.
- Open the UPI app and select the feature labelled UPI Lite, Lite or a similar option in the payments or UPI settings area.
- Choose the bank account to associate with Lite and review the displayed transaction, total and balance limits.
- Enter the amount to add to Lite. Confirm the online top-up using the UPI PIN or other additional-factor authentication requested by the app.
- At a merchant or contact payment screen, select Lite as the payment source when the amount is within the displayed Lite limit. The payment should not ask for the UPI PIN for that individual Lite transaction.
- To add capacity later, start another top-up and complete the online authentication step.
Disabling Lite and recovering the available funds
BHIM says users can disable Lite to release available funds to the linked account. Use the app’s UPI Lite settings, choose the disable or close option, and confirm the transfer instructions shown there. Allow for the app’s stated processing time; do not assume that a pending payment or refund is instantly included.

Changing phones
BHIM instructs users to disable the existing Lite account before changing devices and then recreate Lite on the new phone. This prevents the old device from retaining an active Lite setup and gives the new installation a fresh association with the linked account.

| Feature | UPI Lite | Regular UPI |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum payment amount | ₹1,000 under RBI’s December 4, 2024 framework; your app may show a lower, older or otherwise account-specific limit | Up to ₹1 lakh ordinarily under NPCI’s FAQ; higher ceilings exist for certain categories, subject to bank/app controls |
| Total Lite balance or limit | ₹5,000 total under the current RBI framework; presentation and rollout can vary by app | Not a stored-value wallet limit; available account balance and bank risk limits apply |
| Funding source | Prefunded Lite value moved from the linked bank account | Linked bank account at the time of payment |
| Authentication for each payment | No UPI PIN/AFA for each qualifying Lite payment | Normally UPI PIN or the bank/app’s required authentication |
| Authentication for adding funds | Required; top-up is online | Required as part of the payment flow when the bank/app requests it |
| Alerts | RBI describes no real-time transaction alert as part of the qualified offline design | Normal app and bank notification processes apply, subject to connectivity and settings |
| Interest | Non-interest-bearing balance | Funds remain in the bank account under that account’s terms |
| Refund destination | NPCI’s original circular says refunds and other credits are processed online to the linked bank account | Refund handling follows the normal UPI and bank-account transaction flow |
| Device migration | Disable the old Lite setup and recreate it on the new phone, following BHIM’s documented procedure | Re-register or restore the UPI app as required by the bank/app |
Practical examples
Example: several ₹80 to ₹300 purchases
If you repeatedly pay small amounts and your app supports the current Lite framework, Lite can reduce the number of PIN prompts. Keep enough balance for the day, watch the remaining total, and top up only through the authenticated online flow.
Example: a ₹1,200 purchase
A ₹1,200 payment exceeds the RBI Lite per-transaction framework. Use regular UPI, even if your Lite balance has more than ₹1,200 available.
Example: sending ₹25,000 to a person
Regular UPI is the appropriate route because the payment is far above Lite’s small-value design. The bank or app may still apply its own daily or risk controls.

Example: the app shows a ₹200 Lite cap
Use the limit displayed by that app for the account. The ₹200 figure is present in older BHIM and NPCI materials, but it is not the current universal RBI framework figure. Contact the bank or app support channel if you need to know whether an update is pending.

Common problems and how to handle them
“Lite is not available”
- Confirm that the selected bank account and mobile number meet the app’s eligibility requirements.
- Check whether the app has enabled Lite for that account or still exposes an older implementation.
- Update the app through its official distribution channel, then review the UPI settings again.
- Use regular UPI when the payment is urgent or Lite remains unavailable.
“Payment declined even though Lite has money”
- Compare the payment amount with the app’s displayed per-transaction cap.
- Check the remaining total or available balance, not just the amount originally added.
- Confirm that the merchant or payment flow supports Lite.
- Try regular UPI if the app requires a fresh online check or the Lite service is temporarily unavailable.
“I cannot top up”
Top-ups require online connectivity and additional-factor authentication. Check the linked bank account, internet connection and authentication status. A payment that can be made from an existing Lite balance does not imply that a new top-up can be completed offline.
“The balance did not return after a refund”
NPCI’s original circular says refunds and other credits are processed online to the linked bank account. Check the bank-account statement and the app’s transaction history rather than expecting the Lite balance to rise immediately.
“I changed phones and Lite is missing”
Disable Lite on the previous device when possible, then recreate it on the new phone. If the old device is lost, contact the bank or app support team to secure the account before setting up the new device.

NPCI’s March 16, 2022 UPI Lite circular cited the payment pattern it was designed to simplify: about 75% of retail transactions, including cash transactions, were below ₹100, and 50% of UPI transactions were up to ₹200. Those were historical figures used when the feature was introduced, not current transaction-share statistics.
The engineering rationale is to handle frequent small payments without sending every low-value authorisation through the real-time core-banking system. The result is a streamlined payment experience, but with a deliberately small prefunded balance and a separate top-up process.
Checklist before choosing
- Amount: Will your normal payment exceed the app’s displayed Lite cap?
- Frequency: Do you make enough small payments for fewer PIN prompts to matter?
- Balance management: Are you willing to keep money in a non-interest-bearing Lite balance?
- Connectivity: Do you understand that top-ups are online and that offline behaviour depends on the app’s implementation?
- Limits: Have you checked the current figures in your own app instead of relying on an older FAQ?
- Fallback: Can you use regular UPI when Lite is unavailable or a payment exceeds the cap?
Bottom line
UPI Lite is the convenience option for frequent small payments: it uses a prefunded balance and removes the UPI-PIN step from each qualifying transaction. Regular UPI remains the general-purpose option for larger amounts and direct bank-account payments. Use RBI’s current ₹1,000-per-payment and ₹5,000-total framework as the reference point, but treat the limit shown by your own bank and app as decisive because older published figures and rollout differences still exist.
