What the 800-million milestone means
The reported figure describes September’s monthly transaction total divided into a daily average. It should not be read as a single-day record or as proof that each day individually passed 800 million transactions. Headlines about an 800-million count on one particular day refer to a different measure.

The reported September total was lower than August’s, even though September’s daily average was higher. August had 31 days; September had 30, so a month with fewer transactions overall can still have a higher daily average.

The September report puts transaction value at ₹29.37 trillion, compared with ₹24.89 trillion in September 2025. Volume and value measure different things: the first counts transactions, while the second totals the money transferred.
How firmly are September’s figures confirmed?
The NPCI UPI product-statistics page displayed monthly data through August 2026 in the information available for this story. It lists August at 24,508.96 million transactions and ₹29,82,355.95 crore in value, along with 752 live banks. It does not independently confirm the September total or daily average. Accordingly, the 802-million figure should be attributed to Dainik Jagran English rather than described as an NPCI-confirmed September statistic.

NPCI’s statistics page notes that its figures exclude transactions involving a debit and credit to the same account from August 2018 onward. This definition matters when comparing the published totals with other counts that may use a different scope.

What UPI activity includes
UPI supports payments between individuals as well as payments to merchants. NPCI’s ecosystem statistics glossary calls these person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. The distinction illustrates the kinds of activity counted, but an August 2025 breakdown is too old to establish the mix in September 2026. NPCI’s UPI ecosystem statistics defines the terms.
