These options have their own availability requirements; none is guaranteed to work during a wider bank, telecom or payment-system disruption.
First identify what is failing
A UPI error does not always mean the same thing. The problem may be with one app, your internet or phone, your bank’s channel, or the payment infrastructure. Switching UPI apps may help only when the issue is limited to the app you were using. If the bank or underlying payment service is unavailable, another app that depends on the same service may fail too.

Before trying another method, check your bank alerts and transaction history. If the payment might have been debited or is still pending, verify its status before retrying; a second attempt could create a duplicate payment.

Choose a fallback by payment type
| What you need to do | Fallback to try | What it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Send money to a person’s bank account | IMPS, or NEFT if appropriate | Your bank’s app or website must offer the service and be working. You may need the recipient’s bank details; limits and charges depend on your bank. |
| Pay an online merchant | Card checkout, if offered, or the merchant’s stated alternate method | The merchant must accept that method and its payment processing must be available. IMPS or NEFT may not be offered at checkout. |
| Pay at a shop or service in person | Physical debit or credit card, if accepted; otherwise cash may be an option | The merchant must accept the card and card processing must work. Cash is practical only if both sides can use it. |
| Use UPI without a smartphone app | Potentially, UPI access through NUUP using *99# | Support, bank eligibility and telecom service are required. This is an access alternative, not a fix for an underlying UPI, bank or network outage. |
For a person-to-person bank transfer, try IMPS or NEFT
IMPS: the closest match for an immediate transfer
If UPI alone is unavailable and your bank’s channel is working, IMPS is the clearest bank-transfer fallback when you need money sent in real time. NPCI describes IMPS as available 24×7 through mobile, internet and ATM channels. NPCI states a per-transaction limit of ₹5 lakh for channels other than SMS and IVR; your bank may set applicable limits or other conditions, so confirm them with the bank. NPCI’s IMPS information
Use the IMPS facility in your bank’s app or website, if available, and follow its prompts for the recipient’s details. Check the details carefully before confirming. Availability of the channel, beneficiary setup, charges and limits can vary by bank.

NEFT: another bank-transfer route
NEFT is also an option for transferring money to a bank account. The Reserve Bank of India’s FAQ, updated September 2, 2024, says NEFT is available 24x7x365 and provides near-real-time transfer; it also notes that customers can use internet banking when their bank offers the service. NEFT is a bank-transfer method, not a universal replacement for scanning a merchant QR code. RBI’s NEFT FAQ

For an online purchase, use the merchant’s available checkout options
If UPI fails at an online checkout, look for a card option or follow the merchant’s own alternate-payment instructions. A card is a separate merchant-payment route, but it works only if the merchant accepts it and card processing is functioning. Government material lists debit and credit cards alongside IMPS and NEFT as payment modes. Press Information Bureau
Do not assume that a bank transfer will complete an online order: the merchant may not support IMPS or NEFT at checkout, and sending money separately may not automatically link it to your order.

At a shop, try an accepted card or cash
Ask whether the merchant can take a physical debit or credit card. Card acceptance and processing are merchant-specific, so this may not help if the merchant’s card terminal or network is also unavailable. If both parties can use cash, it is a straightforward non-digital option for an in-person purchase.
When *99# may help—and when it will not
UPI access through the National Unified USSD Platform (NUUP) using *99# may help some users who cannot access a smartphone app. It is not a separate payment rail that bypasses UPI: it still depends on supported service, bank eligibility and telecom connectivity, and should not be treated as a remedy for a UPI or network outage.
In a March 8, 2022 release, the RBI described the *99# option as “cumbersome and not popular.” That statement concerns this particular access route as described at the time, not UPI generally. Support and usability may vary. RBI’s UPI123Pay release
Do not mistake RuPay credit card on UPI for an outage fallback
Linking a RuPay credit card for eligible UPI merchant QR payments still uses UPI. NPCI describes this feature for merchant payments and excludes person-to-person payments and other use cases. It can provide another way to fund an eligible UPI merchant payment, but it does not solve an outage affecting the UPI path. NPCI’s RuPay Credit Card on UPI information
Quick Recap
Use this quick troubleshooting sequence
- Check the transaction before repeating it. Look in your bank app, transaction history and alerts for a debit, pending payment or confirmation. If the status is unclear, contact your bank or merchant before trying again.
- If sending money to a person, check whether your bank’s IMPS service is available; use NEFT as another bank-transfer option. Confirm the recipient details and your bank’s terms.
- If paying online, choose a card checkout option if the merchant offers one, or use the merchant’s stated alternate method.
- If paying in person, ask about physical card acceptance; consider cash if both you and the merchant can use it.
- If the issue is app access rather than a wider service failure, *99# may be an option for eligible users. Do not rely on it when the bank, UPI service or telecom connection is down.
- If several channels are failing, avoid cycling through repeated attempts. Check the bank’s service notices and transaction status, then retry only when you understand whether the earlier payment went through.
