If you want your first OLED television without moving into flagship pricing, the 55-inch Samsung S85H is one of the most convincing entry-level options tested recently. What Hi-Fi found it unusually bright for its class, with a punchy, three-dimensional image and four full-speed HDMI 2.1 ports for serious gaming.
A UK deal reported on 14 October 2026 put the set at £1,074 from Richer Sounds, down from the £1,500 price used for testing. Code RSTV50 was reported to reduce the discounted price by a further £50, with a possible £75 Samsung cashback claim subject to the promotion’s terms. What the Samsung S85H is
The S85H is Samsung’s entry-level OLED 4K television, covered here as the 55-inch model. OLED technology gives every pixel independent control, producing perfect blacks and strong contrast without the blooming that can affect some backlit LCD televisions. The S85H’s appeal is that it adds higher-than-expected brightness and extensive gaming connectivity without moving to Samsung’s more expensive ranges.

What Hi-Fi’s review, published alongside its October 2026 deal report, describes the picture as punchy and three-dimensional. Reviewers said its solidity and depth made it the television their eyes were drawn to during a race scene in F1: The Movie. Those are viewing impressions rather than laboratory measurements, but they explain why the S85H stands out among lower-priced OLEDs.

Picture quality: bright, vivid and less restrained than some rivals
Brightness for an entry-level OLED
The S85H is particularly interesting for rooms with daylight or other ambient light. In What Hi-Fi’s peak-brightness stress test, the reviewer wrote: “Switching to Pan, our standard peak-brightness stress test due to its atypical 4000 nits mastering, it’s immediately clear that the S85H burns brighter than previous entry-level OLEDs we’ve tested and its main rival, the LG B6.” This is a statement about that review’s test and comparison, not a published brightness specification.

Colour and image character
Compared with the LG B6, What Hi-Fi found the Samsung’s colours somewhat more bombastic. That can make animation, sport and HDR highlights look immediately exciting, although viewers seeking a restrained, cinema-like presentation may prefer a more natural tune. The review’s description of a solid, three-dimensional image indicates the S85H is not relying on saturation alone; structure and depth are part of its appeal.
Gaming features and connections
Gaming is one of the S85H’s strongest practical advantages. It has four full-speed HDMI 2.1 inputs. They support 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low-latency mode (ALLM), covering current consoles and a gaming PC without requiring an external HDMI switch.

These capabilities make the S85H unusually well equipped for its price category. As with any 4K/120Hz setup, the source device, cable and game must also support the required signal.
HDR formats: the Dolby Vision limitation
The S85H supports HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG. It does not support Dolby Vision or Dolby Vision Gaming. Samsung presents this as a brand-wide limitation rather than a quirk unique to this model, so Dolby Vision availability should be a deciding factor if your streaming library or console workflow depends on it.

Without Dolby Vision, compatible content will use another supported HDR format or fall back to the source’s available presentation. The television can still deliver OLED contrast and HDR highlights, but format compatibility is narrower than on sets that include Dolby Vision.
Smart TV software and streaming
The latest-generation Samsung Tizen interface is described as easy to navigate and capable of arranging apps based on usage. What Hi-Fi reported Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV present and functioning correctly during testing. App availability and features can vary by country and may change with software updates.

Audio: acceptable for television, limited for films
The built-in system is a 2.0-channel, 20W Dolby Atmos configuration. What Hi-Fi found direction and separation reasonable but said the speakers noticeably lack bass. That makes the set acceptable for daytime television, news and general viewing, while films and bass-heavy soundtracks are likely to benefit from a separate soundbar.
When a soundbar makes sense
- Choose one if you want stronger low-end impact for movies and games.
- It is especially useful in a larger room where the television’s speakers sound thin.
- Check HDMI eARC/ARC compatibility and the soundbar’s physical width before buying.
- Confirm that the soundbar supports the audio formats and control features you plan to use.
A soundbar is an upgrade for the S85H’s clearest weakness, not a requirement for basic viewing.
