Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most people who want a laptop they can improve over time, the Framework Laptop 13 is the clearest choice documented here. Its manufacturer documents user-installed memory and storage upgrades, current AMD AI 300 configurations offer up to 96GB of DDR5 memory and 8TB of NVMe storage, and you can choose between two high-resolution matte displays. The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 is the better fit when you need a larger, workstation-oriented computer with two internal SSD slots. ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and P14s Gen 5 configurations are worth considering when replaceable DDR5 memory matters, while the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 demonstrates an important warning: a thin premium laptop can have an excellent screen and a replaceable SSD but soldered RAM.
These are hardware-fit recommendations, not streaming test results. No independent playback, battery-life, thermal, or screen-quality comparison established which machine delivers a particular service’s 4K tier. Your plan, operating system, browser or app, display connection, and internet service can all affect playback, so verify those requirements separately.

The short answer: choose upgradeability first, then the screen
“Upgradeable” is not a single laptop feature. It usually means one or both of the following:
- Replaceable or expandable memory: you can install a different memory module later instead of living with the amount supplied at purchase.
- Replaceable or additional storage: you can swap the internal SSD, or add another SSD if the chassis has a second slot.
A laptop can offer one without the other. The Framework Laptop 13 has a single internal M.2 2280 slot, so increasing internal storage means replacing the existing SSD. The ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 has two M.2 2280 slots, allowing a second drive to be added, but its memory is a single CAMM2 module rather than conventional SO-DIMMs. The X1 Carbon Gen 13 has soldered memory and one replaceable SSD slot.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For ordinary streaming, browsing, and office work, the practical advantage is longevity: you can buy the capacity you need now and have a documented upgrade route if your workload grows. More memory helps when many browser tabs, video calls, creative applications, and background processes are open at once. More storage helps when you keep downloaded media, large games, photos, or project files locally. Neither upgrade, by itself, proves that a streaming service will permit a higher playback resolution.
How the four documented choices compare
| Laptop | Memory upgrade path | Internal storage | Display options relevant to watching video | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Framework Laptop 13 | Framework documents adding memory later. Current AMD AI 300 configurations list up to 96GB DDR5; the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 Laptop 13 Pro uses LPCAMM2 modules. | One M.2 2280 slot. Current product configurations list up to 8TB NVMe storage; upgrading means replacing the installed drive. | 13.5-inch, 3:2 matte panels: 2256×1504 (2.2K) or 2880×1920 (2.8K). | Portable general-purpose use where a clearly documented buyer-upgrade path is the priority. |
| ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 | One CAMM2 slot, up to 64GB according to Lenovo’s guide. | Two M.2 2280 slots, each up to 4TB, for up to 8TB total in the documented configuration. | IPS or OLED configurations up to 3840×2400. | A larger workstation-oriented laptop for people who also need heavier-duty applications and expandable internal capacity. |
| ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel / P14s Gen 5 AMD | Two DDR5 DIMMs. The referenced Intel configurations support up to 64GB; the referenced AMD configurations support up to 96GB. | One M.2 SSD slot, up to 2TB in Lenovo’s guide. | Selected configurations include high-resolution and OLED panels; the exact panel depends on the model and SKU. | A business-laptop alternative when replaceable conventional memory is important. |
| ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 | Up to 64GB, but the memory is soldered and not a buyer-replaceable module. | One single-sided M.2 2280 SSD slot, up to 2TB. | 2.8K 120Hz OLED or WUXGA LCD options. | A thin-and-light contrast case: attractive display choices, but no RAM upgrade path. |
The figures in this table are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. Lenovo’s T14/P14s information is for the named Gen 5 systems and should not be applied automatically to newer ThinkPad generations.
Framework Laptop 13: the most straightforward all-around upgrade path
What you can change
Framework’s FAQ says: “Yes! The Framework Laptop 13 is fully upgradeable, so you can easily add more memory or storage at any point in the future if you need to.” That is a manufacturer statement about the laptop’s upgrade design, not a guarantee that every component or every generation uses the same parts. The current product specification page for the AMD AI 300 edition lists configurations up to 96GB of DDR5 memory and up to 8TB of NVMe storage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Memory and storage must be matched to the mainboard generation. Framework’s current AMD AI 300 page identifies DDR5-5600, while the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 Laptop 13 Pro FAQ describes LPCAMM2 modules. Those are different standards and are not interchangeable shopping terms. Before ordering an upgrade, identify the exact processor and mainboard generation, then use the corresponding Framework documentation and parts list.
Storage expansion is a replacement, not a second-drive install
Framework’s upgrade guidance specifies one M.2 2280 storage slot in Laptop 13. If the installed SSD is 1TB and you later need more space, the documented path is to replace that drive with a larger compatible NVMe SSD and migrate or restore your data. There is no second internal M.2 slot to fill. This distinction matters if your plan is to keep an existing system drive while adding a separate media or project drive.
Display choices for streaming
The Laptop 13 product page lists a 13.5-inch, 3:2 matte display in either 2256×1504 (2.2K) or 2880×1920 (2.8K). The taller 3:2 shape is useful for web pages, documents, and editing timelines, while video content may show unused space depending on its aspect ratio. The matte finish can reduce reflections in bright rooms. Resolution and finish are specifications only; they do not establish the maximum resolution that a particular streaming service will deliver.

ThinkPad P1 Gen 7: the expandable workstation alternative
Two internal SSD slots
Lenovo’s ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 guide lists two M.2 2280 SSD slots, each supporting up to 4TB in the documented configuration. That creates an 8TB maximum across both slots and, more importantly, lets you add a second internal drive rather than replacing the first. A separate drive can be useful for large media libraries, virtual machines, scratch files, or project data while keeping the operating system on the original SSD.
CAMM2 memory, up to 64GB
The same guide lists one CAMM2 memory slot with support up to 64GB. CAMM2 is not a DDR5 SO-DIMM, so do not buy a generic laptop memory kit based solely on the word “DDR5.” Check the P1 Gen 7 parts documentation and the exact factory configuration before purchasing a module.
Display configurations
Depending on configuration, the P1 Gen 7 is available with IPS or OLED panels up to 3840×2400. An OLED option may appeal to viewers who prefer high contrast, while the higher resolution can provide a sharp desktop for editing and multitasking. These are panel specifications, not evidence that a service will authorize 4K playback or that the laptop has been independently measured for color, brightness, battery life, or thermals.
Who should buy it
Pick the P1 Gen 7 when streaming is only one part of a heavier workload and you specifically want a larger workstation-class system with two internal SSD positions. It is a less direct answer for someone seeking the smallest, simplest streaming laptop; its value is the combination of workstation capability and internal expansion.

ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 and P14s Gen 5: conventional DIMM flexibility
Lenovo’s guide for the named ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 Intel, T14 Gen 5 AMD, and P14s Gen 5 AMD systems lists two DDR5 memory sockets. The referenced Intel configurations support up to 64GB, while the referenced AMD configurations support up to 96GB. Having two DIMMs gives you a conventional, replaceable-memory path that is easy to understand if you already own compatible DDR5 modules or expect your multitasking needs to increase.
The guide lists one M.2 SSD slot with support up to 2TB. Unlike the P1 Gen 7, that is a replacement route rather than a second-drive expansion route. Selected T14 and P14s configurations include high-resolution and OLED displays, but Lenovo’s guide covers multiple panels, so the model name alone does not identify the screen you will receive. Confirm the exact panel, resolution, finish, and any brightness specification in the SKU’s listing.
These models are sensible business-laptop alternatives when replaceable DDR5 memory matters more than having two SSD slots. The guide carries a 2023 copyright date and applies to the specified Gen 5 families; do not infer that every later T-series or P-series generation retains the same DIMM arrangement.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13: a display-led option without upgradeable RAM
The X1 Carbon Gen 13 is the warning against choosing by family reputation. Lenovo lists up to 64GB of memory, but it is soldered. You must therefore choose the RAM capacity at purchase; opening the laptop will not turn it into a higher-memory configuration later.
Storage is more flexible. Lenovo lists one single-sided M.2 2280 SSD slot supporting up to 2TB. “Single-sided” is an important clearance requirement: an otherwise compatible-looking double-sided SSD may not fit the documented space. Verify the drive’s physical layout and the exact X1 Carbon Gen 13 specification before ordering.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Display choices include a 2.8K 120Hz OLED panel and WUXGA LCD options. Those choices may be attractive for video viewing and general portability, but they do not offset the soldered-memory limitation if your buying priority is future RAM expansion.

What “excellent streaming” depends on beyond the laptop
A high-resolution panel is only one part of the playback chain. Before assuming that any laptop will deliver a service’s highest tier, verify all of the following for the service and country where you will use it:
- Subscription plan: some services reserve higher resolutions or HDR for particular plans.
- Operating system and application: browser and dedicated-app capabilities can differ, and an app may impose different DRM or resolution rules.
- Display path: an external monitor, dock, adapter, or receiver can affect protected playback and supported output modes.
- Network connection: sustained bandwidth, latency, Wi-Fi conditions, and congestion influence stability and quality.
- Panel specification: check the exact resolution, aspect ratio, finish, refresh rate, and panel type of the SKU you are buying.
No authoritative, current service-requirement matrix was established for this comparison. Treat “4K-ready,” “HDR,” or similar labels in a retailer listing as claims to verify with the streaming provider, not as an automatic result of buying a 2.8K or 4K laptop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right upgrade path before ordering
1. Identify the exact generation and configuration
Start with the complete model name, processor family, region, and factory configuration. A single family can contain soldered memory, SO-DIMM sockets, or CAMM2 depending on generation. Use the manufacturer’s specification or service documentation for that precise system rather than a review of a similar-looking model.
2. Decide whether you need more memory or more storage
Memory and storage solve different problems. If slowdowns occur while many tabs, video meetings, editing tools, and background applications are open, additional RAM may be the relevant upgrade. If the system remains responsive but the drive is filling, a larger SSD is the relevant purchase. Framework and the T14/P14s provide one internal SSD slot, so capacity increases there require replacing the current drive; the P1 Gen 7 provides a second slot.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
3. Match the module standard, not just the capacity
Use the documented standard and physical format: DDR5 SO-DIMM where specified, LPCAMM2 for the applicable Framework Intel edition, or CAMM2 for the P1 Gen 7. Capacity alone is not a compatibility test. Also check generation-specific speed support, slot count, and whether the manufacturer imposes single-sided clearance requirements.
4. Select the display you actually want
Choose by panel type, resolution, aspect ratio, and finish. Framework’s 3:2 matte 2.2K and 2.8K options, the P1’s IPS or OLED panels up to 3840×2400, the T14/P14s selected OLED choices, and the X1 Carbon’s 2.8K 120Hz OLED are materially different viewing experiences on paper. The exact SKU determines which one you receive.
5. Confirm regional details
Prices, stock, warranty terms, included memory, included SSD capacity, keyboard layouts, and display availability vary by country and date. Check the local product page and warranty documentation immediately before purchase; the capacities listed in this article do not establish a current price or availability.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a family name guarantees upgradeability
ThinkPad T14 Gen 5’s documented DIMMs do not make every ThinkPad a DIMM-equipped laptop. The X1 Carbon Gen 13 has soldered RAM, and the P1 Gen 7 uses CAMM2. Always open the exact specification or service guide for the generation you are buying.
Buying generic DDR5 memory
DDR5 describes a memory generation, not a universal physical module. SO-DIMM, LPCAMM2, and CAMM2 are different formats. Match the module type, supported capacity, and platform generation before checkout.
Expecting a second SSD where there is only one slot
The Framework Laptop 13 and the referenced T14/P14s systems each list one internal M.2 position. Their upgrade is a drive replacement. The P1 Gen 7 is the option in this comparison with two documented M.2 2280 slots.
Using resolution as proof of streaming quality
A 2880×1920, 3840×2400, or 2.8K panel can display a sharp desktop, but it cannot override a service’s plan, DRM, app, operating-system, output, or network limits. Verify the provider’s current requirements for your setup.
Ignoring physical SSD details
The X1 Carbon Gen 13 specification calls for a single-sided M.2 SSD. Check physical clearance and the manufacturer’s compatibility information rather than assuming every M.2 2280 drive is suitable.
Bottom line
The Framework Laptop 13 is the strongest general recommendation when a documented, buyer-friendly path to future memory and storage changes matters most. Choose the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 when you need workstation capability and two internal SSD slots. Choose the T14 Gen 5 or P14s Gen 5 only for the exact documented configurations if replaceable DDR5 DIMMs are your priority. Choose the X1 Carbon Gen 13 for its thin design and display options only if you are comfortable selecting soldered RAM capacity up front. In every case, confirm the exact SKU and the streaming service’s own playback requirements before treating the screen specification as a promise of 4K or HDR playback.
