Update Laptop BIOS Safely: HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, MSI and Acer

To update a laptop BIOS safely, identify the exact model and installed firmware, check whether the manufacturer’s update addresses a real need, prepare power and encryption recovery, then use only that model’s official update method. Keep the laptop connected to AC power and do not interrupt the update. Procedures and battery requirements differ by model, so treat the steps below as a safety framework—not a universal flashing recipe.

Should you update your laptop BIOS?

Update when the release notes for your exact laptop identify a relevant fix, security issue, compatibility improvement, or manufacturer-recommended maintenance need. “Latest” does not automatically mean necessary. Acer cautions that a BIOS update will not make a system faster or improve its performance; install one for a specific reason, not as a speed tweak. Acer’s notebook guidance explains this distinction.

BIOS (also called UEFI firmware on many newer laptops) initializes hardware and supports the operating system. A failed or incorrect update can leave a computer unable to start. HP warns that installing the wrong BIOS can stop the computer from working, so the exact product match matters more than the brand name alone.

Before you start: identify the laptop and prepare it

  1. Record the model and current firmware. In Windows, open System Information and note the System Model and BIOS Version/Date. Confirm the product using its serial number, service tag, or SNID when the manufacturer’s support site requests it.
  2. Read the exact-model release notes and instructions. Check the supported model and operating system, any prerequisite firmware versions, and the vendor’s update method. Do not assume a package for a similar-looking laptop applies to yours.
  3. Get the recovery key before changing firmware. BIOS changes can trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, locate and verify access to the recovery key. Follow the laptop maker’s directions for suspending protection before the update and restoring it afterward. If the laptop is managed by an employer or school, ask IT before changing encryption settings.
  4. Back up important files. A backup is a sensible precaution before firmware maintenance; it does not replace following the vendor’s procedure.
  5. Connect the correct AC adapter and check battery requirements. Keep compatible mains power connected throughout the update. Meet any battery threshold shown by the vendor utility or model instructions; thresholds are not universal. Close applications before starting.

Brand Where to find the update Important conditions in the vendor guidance
HP HP Software and Driver Downloads; notebook instructions describe running the package or HP BIOS Update and Recovery utility. Keep AC power connected, close applications, suspend BitLocker while retaining the recovery key, and do not turn off or restart while the update is applying. HP warns that the wrong BIOS can stop the computer from working. See HP’s BIOS update instructions.
Dell Identify the product at Dell Support, choose the installed operating system and BIOS category, then use the matching package. Dell also describes SupportAssist and Windows Update routes. Dell recommends AC power and specifies at least 10% battery in its guide; administrator access may be required. Suspend BitLocker as directed and do not turn off the computer during the update. Follow the exact model’s page and Dell’s BIOS update guide.
Lenovo Use Lenovo Vantage or search the exact model on Lenovo Support for its BIOS package and instructions. During memory retraining, the screen may go blank. Lenovo’s model user guide says, “Do not press the power button to interrupt the process.” Wait for the documented process to finish; consult the guide for your laptop.
ASUS Use MyASUS or the exact model’s page on ASUS Support. The method varies by x86/x64 versus ARM architecture and may involve MyASUS in UEFI. Some update prompts require a connected power source and battery above 20%; this is a prompt-specific condition, not a universal ASUS or industry threshold. Have the BitLocker recovery key available and follow the exact model instructions.
MSI Follow the notebook-specific BIOS update article and listed methods on MSI Support. Do not disconnect power, press keys, or connect or disconnect devices during the update. MSI’s BitLocker instructions say to suspend protection before updating and resume it afterward. See MSI notebook BIOS update guidance and MSI BitLocker instructions.
Acer Search Acer Drivers and Manuals using the serial number, SNID, or model, then inspect BIOS/Firmware. Some systems without a BIOS listing on the site may receive an update through Windows Update. Connect the AC adapter. Acer recommends updating for a specific fix or relevant improvement, not simply to seek better speed. See Acer Drivers and Manuals, Acer notebook BIOS guidance, and Acer Windows Update guidance.

Run the update without interrupting it

  1. Launch the official package or utility for the exact model and follow its on-screen instructions. If the manufacturer specifies a particular update environment or sequence, use that rather than substituting a general method.
  2. Keep the AC adapter connected. Do not power off, restart, close the lid, press keys, or unplug peripherals while flashing unless the model’s instructions explicitly direct you to do so.
  3. Wait through any documented restarts, blank display, or indicator changes. Dell’s support guide says, “Do not turn off the computer during the BIOS or UEFI update process.” Lenovo specifically warns that memory retraining may blank the screen; do not press the power button in response.
  4. When the laptop returns to the operating system, check that it starts normally and confirm the BIOS version/date in System Information or the vendor utility.
  5. If you suspended BitLocker or device encryption, restore protection after a successful boot and confirm it is active.

If the screen goes black or the update does not finish

A blank screen can be part of a documented process on some Lenovo models, including memory retraining. If your exact-model instructions describe this behavior, leave the laptop connected to power and wait. Do not infer that every black screen is normal: if the documented process has ended without a restart or return to the operating system, or the computer appears stuck, use the manufacturer’s recovery instructions for that exact model or contact its support team.

If the update fails or Windows requests a BitLocker recovery key, use the verified key rather than trying another BIOS package. Do not install firmware intended for a different model or attempt an improvised recovery procedure. Recovery steps vary by laptop and configuration, so the correct source is the product-specific vendor guidance.
