This will be No. 844’s first public appearance since it traveled with No. 4014 in 2019 for the 150th anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike in Utah. Union Pacific originally announced Big Boy’s holiday tour in September; its Oct. 5 update added No. 844, and the current schedule lists both locomotives.

Why No. 844 is a notable partner for Big Boy
Built in 1944, No. 844 hauled Union Pacific passenger trains including the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose, and Challenger. After diesel locomotives took over passenger service, it worked freight service in Nebraska from 1957 to 1959. It escaped scrapping in 1960 and was retained for special service.

Union Pacific describes No. 844 as the last steam locomotive built for the railroad and the only Class I steam locomotive in North America never permanently retired from service. Its pairing with No. 4014 brings together two of the railroad’s historic steam engines for the announced holiday event.
