Unsloth Desktop has the broadest documented scope of the four apps in this comparison. Its vendor describes one free, open-source program for running and training models locally, with text, image, video, and audio workflows, plus API and agent connections. LM Studio, Ollama, and AnythingLLM each cover a narrower part of that job. Whether Unsloth Desktop should replace any of them depends less on a general winner than on the tasks you run every week.

This article is built from the vendors’ product pages, official requirements and documentation, and Unsloth’s launch announcement dated August 11, 2026. It is not a controlled benchmark or an independent speed test. The preference in the headline is a personal judgement, and the sections below show what each product documents so you can check that judgement against your own machine.

The launch announcement describes Desktop this way: “Unsloth Desktop is easy to download and requires no setup.” That is Unsloth’s description of its product. Whether setup was easy on your machine is something you can only confirm by running the steps in the checklist further down.

Where each alternative fits

LM Studio

LM Studio is a desktop application for running local models. Its official requirements page sets out platform and hardware details, which are covered in the hardware section below. It is the closest of the three to Unsloth Desktop’s core running role, but the sources reviewed for this piece do not describe training, media generation, or agent features for it.

Ollama

Ollama is a separate local model engine and product. AnythingLLM’s documentation says its bundled desktop provider uses Ollama’s engine but is “not a full Ollama replacement”. If you need Ollama’s full feature set, install Ollama separately. This matters for comparisons: when a reader says they use “Ollama inside AnythingLLM,” they are using a subset of the engine, not the whole product.

AnythingLLM

AnythingLLM’s Desktop overview emphasizes local LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and agents. The desktop app is a single-player application, meaning it is built for one user on one machine. It is the closest match to Unsloth Desktop’s document and agent workflows, but the sources reviewed do not describe training or media generation in it.

Workflow comparison

“Not stated” in the table below means the sources reviewed for this article do not describe the feature. It does not mean the feature is absent from the product.

Hardware and storage

Local inference does not run well on every machine, and the vendors’ figures are starting points rather than performance guarantees.

  • LM Studio: Its requirements page recommends 16GB or more of RAM on macOS and Windows, and 4GB of dedicated VRAM for Windows. Viable model size also depends on context settings and model quantization.
  • AnythingLLM: It recommends 16GB of RAM and an 8-core CPU as a broad baseline. Its guidance says the client is lightweight, but the selected local model is often the main hardware bottleneck, and GPU acceleration can matter on Windows.
  • Storage: Local models are stored on your computer, so storage needs rise with model size. AnythingLLM’s guidance makes this point directly.
  • Unsloth Desktop: The product material reviewed here does not give a minimum hardware specification. Check the current release notes and hardware support for your platform.
  • External SSD: An external drive is an optional accessory for readers whose internal disk lacks room for model files. It is not required. The capacity you need depends on the model sizes and the number of models you keep, so measure your own library before buying.

The tool-calling claim

Unsloth says Desktop’s self-healing tool calls make tool calling “up to 50% more accurate”. That is Unsloth’s own claim. The material reviewed for this article does not include a test protocol, an independent replication, or a baseline, so it should be read as a vendor figure rather than a measured result. If tool calling is central to your work, run your own agent tasks on each setup and count the failures yourself.

How to run your own comparison

  1. Record your hardware. Note CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM, free disk space, and operating system version.
  2. Choose two models you actually use, at the quantization you would normally run, and note the context length setting for each.
  3. Install Unsloth Desktop from its download page for your platform. Record the time from download to first chat and every extra step you needed.
  4. Load the same model in each app. Note how you found it, how you selected its quantization, and how long it took to load. Switch between two models five times and note any failures.
  5. Run the same document question through each app’s document workflow, using the same file, and compare the answers and the setup effort.
  6. Run the same tool-calling task three times in each setup and count the failed or incorrect calls.
  7. Connect an OpenAI-compatible client to each server you use for API work and confirm that a simple request works.
  8. Leave the machine running through a long session and note memory use, crashes, and slowdowns.

Keep the results in a simple table with one row per test and one column per app. A preference that survives this check on your own machine is more useful than any general ranking.

The Bottom Line

Unsloth Desktop is the app in this group with the widest documented scope, so it deserves a test if you train models or want media workflows alongside chat. If your work centres on document questions and agents, AnythingLLM’s documented focus is a closer match. Keep Ollama installed separately if you rely on its full feature set. Whether you stop using the others is a question only your own tests on your own hardware can answer.
