Unlocking the Power of Precision: How the HP Stylus Works

An HP active stylus works with a pen digitizer built into a compatible display. The digitizer reports the pen’s position and whether the tip is touching the screen to Windows. When the pen and the laptop both support them, those reports can also carry pressure and tilt, which apps can use to change how a stroke looks. For the HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen, HP lists compatibility only with selected HP laptop models that support Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) 2.0. A touchscreen on its own does not tell you whether a laptop will accept that pen.

What the laptop receives from the pen

The pen itself is only half of the system. The other half is the digitizer, a sensing layer in the display that detects the pen. Windows receives that information as digitizer reports, and applications decide what to do with it.

Microsoft’s Windows pen-state documentation describes the sequence. While the pen is in range, Windows receives its location. When the tip is on the surface, Windows receives location, contact, and the corresponding pressure. An app such as a note-taking or drawing program then lays down ink or performs another action based on those values.

The Microsoft sources explain what Windows receives and how it interprets it. They do not document the electrical design of HP’s MPP 2.0 pen, such as its signal method or sensor layout, so this article does not describe those details.

Bluetooth is a separate topic. HP’s setup article documents Bluetooth pairing for the HP Tilt Pen, which is a connection step. Pairing does not replace the digitizer protocol. A laptop still has to support the pen’s protocol before it will accept pen input, and a successful pairing does not prove that it does.

Pressure and tilt

Pressure

Microsoft defines pressure as a force measurement. Its digitizer documentation puts it this way: “Pressure is a measurement of the force that the finger or pen exerts against the digitizer surface.” An app can use changing pressure to vary stroke width, but only when the pen and digitizer report pressure and the app is written to read it.

Tilt

X and Y tilt are angular measurements, defined separately from pressure in Microsoft’s digitizer documentation. They describe how far and in which direction the pen is leaning. How tilt is used depends entirely on the app. A drawing program might change brush shape with the pen angle, while a note-taking app might ignore it. Microsoft’s consumer guidance describes pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition as features that make writing and drawing more expressive, and it does not promise that every pen, laptop, driver, or app supports both.

What is not stated

  • The HP product specification does not state a pressure-level count for the MPP 2.0 pen, so no figure should be assumed.
  • HP describes MPP 2.0 as offering less delay, smoother color transition, and enhanced response time. The product page gives no measured latency number, so these are HP’s product claims rather than independent test results.

HP’s U.S. specifications page for this pen, dated September 2026, is the source for the values below. Where it says nothing, the table says so.

Compatibility depends on the laptop’s protocol support, not on the brand name or the presence of a touchscreen. Before buying, check the following.

  • Find the laptop’s complete model number. The exact model matters, not the product line.
  • Confirm that HP’s compatibility information for this pen lists your model as supporting MPP 2.0.
  • Do not rely on a touchscreen or on “HP” branding as evidence of pen support.
  • Check that the app you plan to use supports the feature you need, especially tilt, since app behavior varies.
  • Expect pressure and tilt only where the hardware reports them. Pairing success alone does not confirm pen input.

Finding the pen and its tips

Search for the pen by its full name, “HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen,” and match the color to the model number above. Because the box already includes two extra tips, a separate tip search should target your exact pen model. The HP page does not give a separate replacement-tip part number, so confirm any tip listing against your pen before ordering.
