Unlocking the Mystery: Can I Record a Conversation on My Samsung Phone?

Often, yes. Samsung’s Phone app on supported Galaxy phones can record calls, either manually during a call or automatically under a setting. Whether you will see the feature depends on three things: your phone model, your software version, and the sales region the phone was bought in. Samsung says call recording is not universal, so the steps below start with a check before you try to record anything.

Check whether your phone supports call recording

Work through these checks in order. Each one narrows down why the feature may or may not appear.

  • Software version. Samsung’s US support page says its call recording guide applies to Galaxy phones updated to One UI 7.0 or higher. To check, open Settings, then Software update, and compare the version shown with that requirement.
  • Phone app menu. Open the Phone app, tap More options (the three dots), and choose Settings. If you see an entry labeled Record calls, the feature is present on your device.
  • Model and sales region. Samsung’s regional guide warns that availability can vary because of local regulations, and that steps differ by model and One UI version. If the software is current and Record calls is still missing, confirm with Samsung support using your exact model and the region where the phone was sold.

How to record a call manually

Manual recording is the simplest route if you only need to capture one conversation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Start an outgoing call or answer an incoming one.
  3. On the in-call screen, tap the Record control. Samsung’s US guide shows it as a Record icon.

Samsung’s guidance does not describe a separate confirmation prompt for manual recording, so check the in-call screen to confirm recording has started before the conversation goes on.

Set up automatic recording

Samsung’s Saudi Arabia support guide, updated April 23, 2026, documents an automatic option. Menu names can differ by device and region, but the path it gives is:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap More options (the three dots), then tap Settings.
  3. Tap Record calls, then tap Auto record calls.
  4. Choose which calls to record: all calls, unsaved numbers only, or specific numbers.

Choose the “specific numbers” option if you want recording limited to particular contacts. Choose “all calls” only if you are sure that the rules for every call you make or receive allow it (see the consent section below).

Find your recordings

According to Samsung’s regional guide, saved recordings are listed under Phone app > More options > Settings > Record calls > Recorded calls. Samsung’s US support page also describes reviewing recordings through call details and the Samsung Voice Recorder app. The exact layout can differ by model, so if the names on your screen do not match these, use the Recorded calls entry in the Record calls menu first.

Transcripts and summaries are a separate feature

Recording and transcription are different capabilities. Samsung’s US guidance says Transcript assist can transcribe and summarize supported recordings. It requires a Samsung account and an internet connection, and supported languages and features vary by region and model.

Samsung’s US guidance names four models for which call transcripts and summaries are unavailable: the Galaxy A56 5G, A36 5G, A26 5G, and A17 5G. That list concerns transcripts and summaries only. It does not say that basic call recording is unavailable on those phones, so check the Record calls menu on your own device rather than assuming.

Feature What it needs Source and limits
Manual recording Record control on the in-call screen of the Phone app Availability varies by region and model (Samsung US and Samsung regional guides)
Automatic recording Record calls menu with Auto record calls Options are all calls, unsaved numbers, or specific numbers. Menu names can differ (Samsung Saudi Arabia guide, April 23, 2026)
Viewing recordings Recorded calls list, call details, or Samsung Voice Recorder Layout can differ by model
Transcripts and summaries Samsung account, internet connection, supported model and language Not available on Galaxy A56 5G, A36 5G, A26 5G, or A17 5G (Samsung US guidance)

What to do if Record calls is missing

  • Your software is older than One UI 7.0. Install the available update under Settings > Software update, then reopen the Phone app menu.
  • Your model or region is not covered. Samsung’s regional guide says availability can vary because of local regulations. Contact Samsung support with your model and the sales region of the phone.
  • Recording works but transcripts do not. That is expected on some models. Transcript assist is a separate feature with its own model, language, and account requirements.
  • The phone came from a carrier. The Samsung sources reviewed here do not explain how carrier-supplied models are handled, so check with your carrier as well as with Samsung.

Samsung’s guidance does not describe a workaround for a missing Record calls menu, so the reliable path is to confirm support with Samsung rather than relying on third-party methods.

Consent, notice, and local law

Recording rules depend on where the people on the call are located, and this article cannot tell you what applies to your situation. Two statements from the relevant sources are worth knowing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Google’s Phone app Help states: “Some laws require all people on the call to consent to being recorded.” That wording comes from Google’s help for its own Phone app, not from a Samsung page.
  • Samsung’s Saudi Arabia support guide, last updated April 23, 2026, says: “Call recording may not be available in some countries due to local regulations.” Its regional instructions also say to inform the other party if the law requires it.

The Samsung sources reviewed here do not say whether a Galaxy phone plays an audible notice when a call is being recorded. Google’s help says its own recording feature notifies both participants when recording starts and stops, but that is a different product. Do not assume a Samsung recording will announce itself. Before you record, check the rules that apply to everyone on the call, and tell the other person when the law requires it.
