Turning on the microphone on a Samsung Galaxy tablet isn’t just a single switch. On modern One UI builds, the mic can be blocked by app permissions, voice-input settings, audio routing (like Bluetooth), or an app’s own in-call/recording controls.

This guide walks you through every practical way to enable microphone access and verify it’s actually listening—then covers the most common reasons Galaxy tablet mics appear “off” even when you think they’re enabled.

What You Need Before You Start

You’ll get the best results if you have a few specifics ready: the app you’re trying to use (Recorder, Voice Recorder, WhatsApp, Google Meet, Zoom, etc.) and your tablet model (Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S8, Tab A9, etc.).

Also note your software version (Android/One UI). Menu names are close across versions, but exact wording can vary.

Method 1: Turn On Microphone Access for the App (Permissions)

This is the first place to check. If the app permission is set to Denied, the microphone icon in the app may still appear—but recording will be silent or fail to start.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select the app you’re trying to use (for example, Voice Recorder, WhatsApp, Google Meet, or Zoom).
  4. Tap Permissions.
  5. Find Microphone.
  6. Set it to Allow.

If you don’t see the permission page on your build, use this fallback path: Settings → Privacy (or Privacy and Security) → Permission manager → Microphone, then select the app and set it to Allow.

Method 2: Enable the Microphone for the Keyboard or Voice Input

If you’re trying to speak into text (search, messaging, note-taking, or voice-to-text), you may need to enable the mic for your keyboard/voice input—not just for a recording app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Samsung Keyboard settings (or your current keyboard).
  4. Tap Voice input (or Voice typing).
  5. Turn on the setting for Use voice input / Voice input and review language options.

If you use Gboard (or another keyboard), open that keyboard’s settings instead and enable voice typing. The microphone permission still needs to be allowed for the keyboard/voice service as well.

Method 3: Check App-Specific Microphone Controls

Many apps include their own mic toggle that’s separate from Android permissions. This is especially common in calls, meetings, and voice messages.

Calls and video meetings (Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams)

  1. Join the meeting or start the call.
  2. Look for a microphone button on-screen.
  3. If it shows Muted, tap it to unmute.
  4. In meeting controls, check for a Mic selection—some apps show multiple audio devices.

Voice recording apps (Samsung Recorder / Voice Recorder)

  1. Open Recorder or Voice Recorder.
  2. Tap Record.
  3. Watch the level meter (if available). If it stays flat, it’s either permission/audio routing or hardware.

Method 4: Confirm the Microphone Isn’t Blocked by System Audio Routing

If you have Bluetooth connected, the tablet may be routing audio to the headset’s microphone—or in some cases, to the wrong device. That can look like “microphone off.”

  1. Open Quick Settings by swiping down from the top of the screen.
  2. Check Bluetooth. If it’s on, confirm what device is connected.
  3. If you want the tablet mic, turn Bluetooth Off, or disconnect the headset.
  4. Try recording again in your target app.

Also check for any accessibility or hearing-related settings that can redirect audio input. If an app has an audio device selector, pick the tablet’s mic (often listed as the tablet speaker/mic device).

Method 5: Run a Quick Microphone Test

A fast test prevents wasted time. Use a built-in tool if your tablet model provides one, or use a recording app to verify mic input.

Option A: Use a voice recorder

  1. Open Recorder or Voice Recorder.
  2. Tap Record and speak for 5–10 seconds.
  3. Tap Stop and play it back.

Option B: Use voice input and verify text appears

  1. Open Messages, Notes, or any text field.
  2. Tap the mic icon on the keyboard (if available).
  3. Speak and confirm the text is transcribed.

If text transcription works but recordings are silent, the issue is likely app-specific or permission-related for recording.

Troubleshooting When the Mic Still Won’t Work

If your microphone still won’t record, work through these in order. It saves time and avoids random setting changes that create new problems.

Permissions still look correct but recording is silent

  • Go back to Settings → Apps → select the app → Permissions → confirm Microphone: Allow.
  • Force stop the app: Settings → Apps → app name → Force stop, then try again.
  • Clear cache for the app: Settings → Apps → app name → Storage → Clear cache.

Clear cache won’t delete your account data for most apps, but it can reset certain local preferences.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mic works in one app but not another

  • Check permissions per app. “Microphone allowed” is not a global permission for all apps.
  • Inside the failing app, verify the in-app mic toggle is not set to Muted.
  • Look for an audio input device dropdown inside the call/voice settings.

Bluetooth headset is connected

This is one of the most common causes of “mic is off.”

  • Disconnect Bluetooth and test again using the tablet mic.
  • Try the headset mic in a call. If the headset mic works in calls, the tablet mic may be fine—and the issue is routing or selection in your app.
  • If you’re on a video call app, pick the correct mic in the device selector.

Dust, debris, or hardware issues

Tablet microphones are small and easy to block. If you notice muffled audio, tap-to-record sounds weak, or you only pick up sound at certain angles, inspect the mic ports.

  • Gently check the mic openings near the tablet’s edges/side (model layouts differ).
  • Use a soft, dry brush. Avoid liquids and sharp tools.
  • Test again immediately after cleaning.

Restart and update steps that often fix it

  1. Restart your Galaxy tablet.
  2. Update Android/One UI: Settings → Software update → Download and install.
  3. Update the affected app from Google Play Store.

After updates, re-check microphone permission once. Some apps reset permissions during major version changes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming one permission fixes everything—permissions are app-specific.
  • Ignoring Bluetooth—audio devices can override which mic is used.
  • Relying on the icon alone—some apps show a mic icon even when recording can’t access audio.
  • Testing in the same broken scenario—always run a quick recording test with a different app.

FAQ

Where is the microphone setting on a Samsung Galaxy tablet?

You’ll usually manage it through app permissions: Settings → Apps → select app → Permissions → Microphone → Allow. Some builds also offer a Permission manager under Privacy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my tablet mic work in voice input but not recordings?

That usually points to app-specific permission differences (recording permission vs voice service behavior) or an in-app mic control inside the recording/recording-call app. Force stop and clear cache for the failing app.

How do I unmute the microphone during a call on my Galaxy Tab?

During the call or meeting, look for the microphone button and tap it until it shows unmuted/unblocked. Also confirm the correct mic device in the audio controls.

Can a case or screen protector block the microphone?

Yes. Some rugged cases cover side openings or mic ports. Remove the case temporarily and test recording again.

What if I can’t find the Microphone permission for an app?

Check under the app’s Permissions menu. If it’s missing, use Settings → Privacy → Permission manager → Microphone, then set microphone access per app.

Bottom Line

To turn on the microphone on your Samsung Galaxy tablet, the fastest path is: allow microphone permission for the specific app, verify any in-app mute toggle, and rule out Bluetooth or audio routing conflicts. Then confirm with a real recording or voice-to-text test.

If it still fails after permissions, device routing, and a clean test, force stop the app, clear cache, restart the tablet, and check the microphone port area for blockage.
