How to start Vlas’s quest in the Outskirts of Mammon
- Go to the Outskirts of Mammon and find Vlas near the Road to Absolution and the wreckage.
- Speak to Vlas, then inspect the nearby wreckage and empty cat cage when the scene prompts you to do so.
- Rest at a Beacon and return to Vlas to advance the sequence. Keep talking to him until his available dialogue is exhausted; guides do not establish a fixed number of rests that works for every playthrough.
How to rescue Vlas at Lonesome Spire
Check the Brigand’s shop first
At Lonesome Spire, find Vlas caged at the camp. Before freeing him, visit the nearby Brigand and check the shop for anything you want. Walkthroughs warn that the shop becomes unavailable after the rescue.

Find the Unremarkable Key
Search the nearby upper-camp shack or hut for a breakable wall and the Unremarkable Key. Descriptions of the hut’s exact position vary, so search the nearby structures rather than relying on a precise compass direction.

Return to the cage and use the Unremarkable Key in the rescue sequence. Then continue through Vlas’s dialogue and the quest’s next location states.

How to finish the quest and make Mutton your base cat
After the rescue, return to the earlier Outskirts location and look for the quest’s follow-up, reported in walkthroughs as a letter. Continue the subsequent dialogue and location steps until Vlas and Mutton appear at Marrow Keep. Their reunion at the Keep is the reported completion state that unlocks Mutton as a base cat.
Guides differ on when the letter appears and on the exact landmarks for the later encounter, so treat the sequence as a set of quest states rather than a guaranteed schedule. If Vlas is not at Marrow Keep, rest at a Beacon, revisit the previous location, and exhaust any dialogue there before checking the Keep again.
What to do if Vlas’s next scene does not appear
- Speak to Vlas until his dialogue options are exhausted.
- Rest at a Beacon, then return to the location where you last saw him.
- Recheck the Outskirts of Mammon for the post-rescue follow-up before looking for him at Marrow Keep.
- Do not assume a particular number of Beacon rests is required; available walkthroughs do not agree on a universal trigger count.
