Atlassian CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes argues that business AI becomes more useful when it can draw on the context of an organization’s work—and when people coordinate how they use it. Speaking at Atlassian’s Team Europe 26 event in Amsterdam, he described AI agents as additions to teams, not replacements for people. That is a strategic vision, not proof that a particular tool will deliver business results.
Why does workplace AI need context?
A model can generate an answer, but useful work often depends on knowing what a team has decided, what it is trying to accomplish, and how a task fits into a larger workflow. Cannon-Brookes summarized his view this way: “Models are the engine, but context is the fuel.” He argues that AI confined to separate information silos captures only part of its potential, while connected organizational context can help people and agents work together.

That distinction matters because a fluent answer is not necessarily a relevant one. Without the right context, an AI system may miss a project decision, misunderstand a team’s priorities, or offer guidance disconnected from how work is actually done. Connecting information may help address that gap, but it also makes access rules and oversight important: context is useful only when systems handle it appropriately and people can judge whether an output is reliable.
Why can faster work create a coordination problem?
AI can help individuals move through tasks more quickly, but speed does not automatically align their work. If several people and agents act at once, teams still need to share decisions, coordinate dependencies, and make clear who is responsible for the next step.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Atlassian’s Teamwork Lab reported a related tension in its 2026 survey: 89% of surveyed executives said AI increases speed, while 6% said they were sure they had clear examples of organization-wide AI return on investment. The same survey found that 87% of surveyed knowledge workers said that when everyone is in execution mode, they lack time or capacity to coordinate. These are survey responses, not measurements of the performance of a specific Atlassian product, and they do not show that speed causes coordination problems.
How does Atlassian describe the role of agents?
Cannon-Brookes’s framing is collaborative: “Across the board, we’re seeing agents aren’t replacing the people, they’re joining your team,” he said. He also said people can work alongside agents “exactly how they want, and when they want to.” These remarks express his view of how agents should fit into work; they do not establish that AI will never replace roles or that every organization will see the same outcome.

The practical implication is to treat agents as part of a managed workflow rather than as isolated features. Teams need to decide what work an agent can do, what context it may use, when a person must review its output, and how its actions are communicated to colleagues. Those choices shape whether automation supports collaboration or simply adds another stream of activity to coordinate.

What did Atlassian announce and demonstrate?
TechRadar reported that Atlassian presented AMP, described as an agentic multiplayer protocol offering, alongside a new Atlassian MCP server, and demonstrated Loom Record for Agent. The interview does not independently validate these capabilities or establish their current availability, detailed functionality, or business impact. Readers evaluating them should check Atlassian’s current product information and access terms rather than infer capabilities from the event report alone.

What does Atlassian’s survey say about AI and teamwork?
Atlassian’s Teamwork Lab says its 2026 findings draw on a double-blind survey collected in January and February 2026 from 12,035 global knowledge workers and 173 Fortune 1000 executives, plus qualitative interviews with 25 Fortune 500 executives. The company describes 14% of teams as having “cracked the AI ROI code,” through ways of working grounded in context, workflows, and culture.
Within that survey, teams in this group were reported as 5.6 times more likely to say AI helps them plan and prioritize work, 9.4 times more likely to say AI increases collaboration, and 2.3 times more likely to fully trust AI to surface and contextualize relevant information. These are reported comparisons in Atlassian’s company research; they do not prove that adopting a particular product causes better planning, collaboration, or trust, and they should not be generalized to all teams.

What should a business take from the argument?
The central lesson is not simply to add more AI. Before adopting agents, a team can assess whether the systems will have relevant context, fit into existing workflows, respect permissions, and leave room for human review and coordination. Those are practical questions for evaluating any workplace AI approach—not evidence that a specific offering has already solved them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCannon-Brookes’s broader claim is that an organization can create a more powerful system of collaboration by combining people and agents. Whether that leads to business success depends on implementation: the quality and governance of the context, the clarity of responsibilities, and whether teams have time to coordinate as work accelerates.
