On October 8, 2026, Union Square Ventures (USV) announced $900 million in new funds. The “doubles” in the headline is shorthand, and whether the increase is really two-fold depends on which earlier fund you compare against. USV says the extra capital will let it lead more rounds, support companies for longer, and back capital-intensive areas such as robotics, manufacturing, and energy. It also says it expects to make roughly the same number of investments as in previous funds.
What USV announced
The firm’s announcement, titled “The Next Chapter of USV” and dated October 8, 2026, describes the new money as $900 million in new funds. The company’s own wording is: “Today, we’re proud to announce $900M in new funds, dedicated to backing startups building at the edge of large markets being transformed by technology.”

The announcement does not break the $900 million down by fund. It does not give legal fund names, closing dates, or the amount committed to each vehicle, so readers should treat $900 million as the firm’s aggregate figure for new capital, not as a split between a core fund and an opportunity fund.

USV’s explanation is that AI has changed the market for early-stage companies in two ways. First, building a company has become easier. Second, demand for the strongest companies has grown. In the firm’s words: “Now, the game on the field has changed as a result of AI. As it’s become easier to build, demand for the best companies has risen. This means bigger rounds and higher prices.”

- Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.
That is a claim about deal pricing, not about the firm’s returns. USV links the larger fund to a market where competitive rounds are bigger and more expensive to win, and where a firm that wants to matter in a round has to commit more capital to do so.
What the new capital is meant to do
USV names three uses for the money:
- Leading more rounds. A larger fund gives the firm room to take the lead position in more financings instead of joining as a smaller participant.
- Supporting companies for longer. More reserves allow USV to follow its companies through later rounds rather than stopping at an earlier stage.
- Investing in capital-intensive categories. USV specifically mentions robotics, manufacturing, and energy, which it describes as areas that take more capital to win.
Read together, these points describe more capital per company and a longer commitment to each one. They do not describe a larger number of investments.

Deal count is expected to stay roughly flat
USV says it expects to make roughly the same number of investments as in its previous funds. That detail matters for anyone reading the headline as a sign of faster deal activity. The stated plan is to spend more per opportunity and support it longer, with the number of companies backed staying in line with past vehicles.

The announcement itself names one earlier figure: its last core fund was $275 million. USV’s 2022 announcement, titled “USV 2022 Funds,” said the firm had raised two funds at that time: a $275 million Core Fund and a $350 million Opportunity Fund. The table below sets the $900 million against each of those baselines. The ratios are simple arithmetic on the announced figures and do not show how the new $900 million is divided among vehicles.

- Built for Running LLMs Locally: RDNA 4, 128 AI Accelerators, up to 1,531 TOPS (INT4) for fast inference and fine-tuning
- 32GB GDDR6 VRAM for Large AI Models: 256-bit, up to 640GB/s bandwidth, run large language and multi-modal AI models without offloading
- Multi-GPU Scaling for Local AI Clusters: PCIe 5.0 and 2-slot design support dense multi-GPU builds for local AI training and inference clusters
- Diecast Shroud and Backplate: Wave-pattern design cuts memory temperature by up to 16%, keeping clocks steady during long AI training runs
- Phase-Change GPU Thermal Pad: Delivers superior thermal conductivity for consistent performance and longevity under heavy AI loads
| Comparison base | Amount | $900M as a multiple | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last core fund (USV 2022 Core Fund) | $275 million | About 3.3 times | USV 2022 announcement; restated in the October 8, 2026 announcement |
| 2022 Opportunity Fund | $350 million | About 2.6 times | USV 2022 announcement |
| Combined 2022 core and opportunity funds | $625 million | About 1.4 times | Sum of the two 2022 figures |
Against the core fund alone, the increase is more than threefold. Against the combined 2022 total, it is about 1.4 times. Neither figure is the official basis for the headline. The 2026 announcement does not say which earlier vehicles, if any, the new $900 million replaces or adds to, so a precise “two times” comparison cannot be drawn from the firm’s own materials.

- 24GB GDDR7 ECC Memory: handles large AI, 3D and rendering files smoothly
- Powerful CUDA Compute - 8,960 CUDA cores for fast graphics and computing power
- AI & Ray Tracing Boost - Tensor of the 5th generation and RT cores of the 4th generation
- PCIe 5.0 x16 interface - fast data connection with modern systems
- 4 × DisplayPort 2.1 - Multi-monitor support for professional workflows
- AI applications
- Physical intelligence
- Consumer and enterprise intelligence
- Energy
The announcement was written by Nick Grossman, Rebecca Kaden, Michael Mignano, and Fred Wilson, whom USV names as its core team. It also mentions longtime investor Nikhil Raman.
What remains unresolved
The October 8, 2026 announcement is the only source for the new $900 million, and it does not establish several details that readers may expect:
- Final legal names for the new vehicles
- Closing dates, or whether the funds have closed in full
- Investor commitments by vehicle
- How the $900 million is allocated between core-style and opportunity-style investing
Until USV publishes that information, the most accurate description is that the firm has announced $900 million in new capital, tied to a stated plan to lead more rounds, support companies longer, and invest in capital-intensive sectors, with roughly the same number of investments as before.
Since the announcement, the core question for founders and co-investors is not whether USV has more money, but how it will deploy it. The firm’s own statements point to larger checks and longer follow-on support, which is a different commitment from simply making more deals.
