Unihertz Tank Review: A Rugged Phone for Camping, but a Heavy Hiking Companion

The original Unihertz Tank pairs a huge 22,000 mAh battery with a built-in area light, but its 560 g weight makes it a better fit for car camping and work sites than for a weight-conscious hike. It is a 4G phone, and neither its ruggedness ratings nor its satellite-navigation support make it a substitute for an emergency communicator.

What the original Unihertz Tank offers outdoors

This review concerns the original Unihertz Tank reviewed by TechRadar in 2023—not the later Tank 2 Pro, Tank 3 Pro, or Tank 4 Pro. TechRadar’s review describes a phone built around battery reserve, a large display, and a powerful rear lamp, with substantial size and mass as the cost.

Specification Reviewed original Tank
Battery 22,000 mAh, as reported by TechRadar in 2023
Weight and dimensions 560 g; 175.6 × 85.30 × 23.9 mm, as reported by TechRadar
Rear camping lamp Rated up to 1,200 lumens, per TechRadar; this is a reported rating, not an independent brightness measurement
Processor, memory, storage MediaTek Helio G99, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB storage
Display 6.81-inch IPS LCD, 1080 × 2340
Network and wireless 4G, dual Nano SIM, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.3; not 5G
Operating system Android 12
Cameras 108 MP main, 20 MP night vision, 2 MP macro, and 32 MP front
Other hardware notes TechRadar reports no microSD slot and no wireless charging

Is the battery and camping light worth carrying?

Battery reserve

TechRadar’s Mark Pickavance reported that the 22,000 mAh battery delivered typical use of six to ten days in the review, and that the included 66 W charger could recharge it in around 2.5 hours. These are review estimates, not guaranteed trip runtimes. Cold weather, weak signal, screen brightness, navigation use, lamp use, and battery age can all change how long it lasts.

Area light

TechRadar describes the rear camping lamp as useful for illuminating a larger area and says it can stay lit for six hours on a charge. Access is through the Toolbox app. The up-to-1,200-lumen figure is the reported rating, not a lab measurement in the review. A built-in lamp may be convenient around camp, but it does not remove the need to plan backup lighting for a trip.

Unihertz Tank, Largest Battery 4G Rugged Smartphone 108MP Camera Fingerprint 66W Fast Charging 2380 Hours Standby 150 Hours Calling Time (Support T-Mobile & Verizon only) Black
  • Carrier Compatibility: The Unihertz Tank is compatible with T-Mobile and MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) on T-Mobile. For Verizon compatibility, users are directed to check forums, Facebook, or contact customer support for guidance on setting up the device on the Verizon network.
  • Rugged Design: The Unihertz Tank is designed for outdoor use, featuring a rugged design that can withstand harsh conditions. This includes a durable construction that meets certain standards for water resistance, dust resistance, and durability against drops.
  • Battery Life: The smartphone boasts the largest battery, providing an impressive 2380 hours of standby time and 150 hours of calling time. This is particularly beneficial for users who require extended battery life in outdoor or remote environments.
  • Camera Capabilities: The Unihertz Tank is equipped with a 108MP camera, indicating high-resolution imaging capabilities. This allows users to capture detailed and high-quality photos and videos.
  • Charging Technology: The device supports 66W fast charging, allowing users to quickly charge the smartphone for minimal downtime. The mention of "Juice up Your Tank in No Time" suggests a rapid charging experience.

The weight trade-off

At 560 g before adding a case or other accessories, the Tank is exceptionally heavy for a phone you carry all day. That bulk is easier to justify in a vehicle, at a work site, or at a campsite where battery reserve and area illumination matter more than pack weight. For a long hike where every gram counts, a lighter phone plus a separate headlamp is likely the more practical arrangement.

Ruggedness and navigation: useful, not a safety guarantee

TechRadar lists IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H ratings in the reviewed phone’s specifications. Those are published product ratings, not a promise that any individual phone will survive every drop, depth, temperature, or exposure. The review cautions against taking it deeper than 1.5 m; do not treat the ratings as blanket permission for underwater use.

Unihertz’s 2024 case study says the Tank supports GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo. That is a manufacturer specification, not independent evidence of positioning accuracy or trail performance. GNSS can determine a position without cellular service when conditions permit, but cellular voice and data require a compatible network and coverage. Neither capability guarantees reception on a remote trail or replaces a dedicated satellite messenger or other emergency plan.

Connectivity and model availability

The reviewed original Tank is a 4G model, not a 5G phone. Whether its cellular bands work well for you depends on your carrier, location, and coverage, so check exact-model compatibility for the places you travel rather than assuming service on a trail. TechRadar’s 2023 review does not establish current carrier compatibility.

As of October 5, 2026, Unihertz’s catalog page showed later Tank-series products but did not establish that the original Tank was still in stock. Confirm that any seller is offering the original model, not a similarly named newer Tank, and verify its condition, software information, and network compatibility before buying.

How it compares with the Doogee V Max

TechRadar’s 2023 review names the Doogee V Max as a comparison. In that review’s context, the V Max had the same 22,000 mAh capacity and 5G, lacked the Tank’s camping lamp, and was described as a few grams lighter, with a better SoC and a higher price at the time. Those observations are dated; they do not establish current versions, prices, or availability. Compare the exact models currently offered rather than relying on an old model-to-model verdict.

For outdoor use, compare more than battery capacity. Check carried weight, independently tested runtime, charging and any reverse-charging capability, carrier bands where you hike, offline-map workflow, durability documentation and warranty, screen readability, and whether the exact model is currently available. The sources cited here do not establish which phone has better GPS accuracy or trail performance.

Who should consider the original Tank?

  • It may suit you if you camp from a vehicle, work outdoors, or value a large battery reserve and built-in area light enough to accept a 560 g phone.
  • Look elsewhere if you prioritize a light hiking pack, expect 5G, or need verified current carrier compatibility and support for a particular route.

For the independent review’s specifications and observations, see TechRadar’s March 1, 2023 Unihertz Tank review. Unihertz’s Tank series catalog, accessed October 5, 2026, shows later models but does not confirm original-Tank stock. Its November 28, 2024 case study is the source for the manufacturer’s GNSS claim.
