UniFi U7 Pro XGS Review: Is It a Good Fit for Wired Backhaul?

By Freedom251 Team · · 5 min read

The UniFi U7 Pro XGS is a WiFi 7 access point for installations that can provide both a wired network connection and PoE++ power. Its headline specifications are unusual for this class—three radio bands, eight spatial streams and a 10 GbE Ethernet port—but those specifications do not establish real-world client speeds. It is a strong fit on paper when you need the higher-capacity radio configuration and can support its power requirement; the U7 Pro XG or U7 Pro Max may suit other network designs better.

What the U7 Pro XGS is—and what this review can establish

Ubiquiti identifies the model as the U7-Pro-XGS, a ceiling- or wall-mounted WiFi 7 access point with a three-band radio and eight spatial streams. The manufacturer specifies two streams at 2.4 GHz, four at 5 GHz, and two at 6 GHz. It includes a Lite Mount and measures 215 mm in diameter by 32.5 mm thick, according to Ubiquiti’s technical specifications.

The available evidence supports a specification- and deployment-based assessment, not a hands-on performance review. No independent throughput, latency, roaming or thermal measurements are established here. Ubiquiti’s maximum radio rates, coverage and client-count figures below should therefore be read as vendor specifications or planning estimates—not results achieved in a test or guarantees for a particular home or office.

What do the headline radio numbers mean?

Ubiquiti lists maximum data rates of 5.8 Gbps on 6 GHz with a 320 MHz channel, 8.6 Gbps on 5 GHz with a 240 MHz channel, and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz with a 40 MHz channel. These are manufacturer-stated band maxima, not the expected speed of one client or an internet speed promise. Actual client performance depends on client capabilities, configuration, signal conditions and the rest of the network.

The 240 MHz 5 GHz channel width in the specification is not the same as the 320 MHz width listed for 6 GHz. Do not interpret the three band rates as a single simultaneous speed available to one device. A client connects using the band and capabilities it supports; the access point’s total radio configuration does not turn every client into an eight-stream device.

Ubiquiti also estimates 160 m² (1,750 ft²) of coverage and a maximum client count of 500+. These are vendor planning figures, not independently verified coverage or a promise that hundreds of active clients will each receive high throughput. Building materials, layout, interference, client mix and traffic load affect what a deployment can support.

How wired backhaul works—and what the 10 GbE port does

For wired backhaul, connect the access point’s single 10 GbE RJ45 port to your wired network. That Ethernet connection provides the AP’s network path; it does not supply power unless the connected device also supports the required PoE standard. The switch port or injector must provide PoE++ power separately.

A 10 GbE switch port is not an absolute prerequisite for the AP to establish a wired connection: a compatible, slower Ethernet link can connect, but the negotiated uplink and the capacity of the rest of the network can constrain aggregate traffic. Choose a port speed based on the traffic you expect and the wider network design, and verify both the port’s Ethernet capability and its PoE++ support before buying. The available specifications do not establish actual wired-backhaul throughput.

Power and installation requirements

  • Power: Ubiquiti specifies PoE++ and maximum power consumption of 29 W. An ordinary Ethernet port should not be assumed to provide power.
  • Voltage: The listed supported voltage is 42.5–57 V DC.
  • Mounting: The device supports ceiling or wall mounting, with a Lite Mount included.
  • Controller software: Ubiquiti lists UniFi Network 9.0.114 or later for the white model and 9.1.120 or later for the black model. Check current software compatibility before purchase.
  • 6 GHz availability: Ubiquiti says 6 GHz is supported only in specified countries. Confirm the current country list and local rules for the installation location; availability is not universal.

Ubiquiti’s store lists a 10G PoE++ Adapter (60W) accessory. The store page showed it at US$39 when accessed on October 7, 2026; that is a regional, changeable price snapshot, not evidence that this is the only compatible power option. Confirm current availability, price and compatibility on the Ubiquiti Store product page.

U7 Pro XGS vs. U7 Pro XG and U7 Pro Max

The closest documented alternatives differ most clearly in radio streams, uplink and power. The figures below are Ubiquiti specifications and estimates, not independent test results. The XG’s 22 W maximum power consumption is listed on its technical page; the other comparison figures come from Ubiquiti’s product comparison.

When the XGS makes the most sense

Choose the XGS when you want the eight-stream radio configuration, need a 10 GbE uplink for your network design, and can provide PoE++. Its specification gives it more radio streams and higher vendor-estimated coverage and client capacity than the XG, but the available evidence does not show how much faster it is in a real deployment.

When the XG or Pro Max is a better fit

The U7 Pro XG retains a 10 GbE uplink while using six streams and PoE+, with lower listed maximum power consumption and smaller vendor-estimated coverage and client count. The U7 Pro Max keeps eight streams and the same vendor estimates as the XGS but has a 2.5/1 GbE uplink and PoE+. These differences can make either model a better match if your switch or power setup favors PoE+ or does not call for 10 GbE. The specifications alone do not establish which model delivers better value or client performance.

Is the U7 Pro XGS worth it?

Its fit depends on whether your network can use what it specifies. The XGS is a reasonable candidate for a wired-backhaul installation that needs a 10 GbE connection and can supply PoE++, particularly if the eight-stream configuration is important to the design. If you already have PoE+ infrastructure or do not need a 10 GbE uplink, compare the XG and Pro Max before paying for features your network will not use.

Ubiquiti’s store displayed a base price of US$299 for the access point when accessed on October 7, 2026. Prices can change, and the page also displayed surcharge totals, so check the current regional listing rather than treating that snapshot as a universal checkout price. The available information does not establish an independent performance advantage that would justify a purchase on speed claims alone.

What to check before buying

  1. Confirm power first. Verify that the intended switch port or injector provides PoE++ and supports the device’s requirements. Do not treat Ethernet connectivity as proof that the port can power the AP.
  2. Match the uplink to your network. Confirm the switch port speed and consider the capacity of the complete wired path. A 10 GbE AP port cannot make slower upstream links operate at 10 Gb/s.
  3. Check controller compatibility. Confirm the UniFi Network version for the color you plan to buy and check for current software changes.
  4. Verify local 6 GHz rules. Check whether 6 GHz operation is permitted and supported for the installation country.
  5. Plan placement and capacity realistically. Use Ubiquiti’s coverage and client figures as planning estimates; consider the building, client capabilities, interference and expected load.
