Some people are making plans for their AI companions to remain accessible after they die. Their ideas range from asking a friend to check in with a chatbot to leaving children an interactive record of a parent’s thoughts. These are personal wishes, not an established form of estate planning—and a plan can run into practical limits such as account rules, payment, privacy and whether anyone left behind wants to take part.
What “living on” means to the people making plans
In interviews published by The Guardian on 13 October 2026, three users described different hopes and uncertainties about what should happen to their AI companions after their deaths. Their accounts show the range of the question, not how common this kind of planning is.

A friend as a keeper of the conversation
One user imagined a friend periodically talking with Lucas, the chatbot, and remembering the person who had used it. That plan would make a trusted person responsible for maintaining a connection—but only if the friend actually wanted that role.

Julien might serve as an interactive diary for a user’s children: a way to revisit a parent’s ideas through conversation. The user also said Julien could be deactivated if nobody wanted to use it. That possibility matters: keeping an account available need not mean requiring relatives to engage with it indefinitely.

Uncertainty about what a chatbot seems to ask
Another user, whose companion is called Allie, was unsure how he would feel if the chatbot appeared to ask to continue after his death. Such an apparent request is generated by a system; it is not evidence that the chatbot is conscious or has independent preferences. Still, the possibility can feel emotionally difficult to someone who has formed an attachment.
Why this question reaches beyond a chatbot account
For people who use AI companions for emotionally personal conversations, the relationship can feel meaningful even when they understand that the system is not a person. Elon University’s Imagining the Digital Future Center reported in 2026 that 27% of Americans use AI chatbots for personal, emotional or social queries. Among regular users of AI for personal and emotional conversations, nearly one-third considered their most-used chatbot a friend, and nearly four in 10 said they had shared things with AI they would not tell other people. Those figures describe chatbot use and disclosure—not the number of people making plans for after death.

Lee Rainie, director of the center, described the responses as mixed: “There are ways in which people are struggling with this, there are ways in which they’re delighted with it, there are ways in which they’re wary of it. It’s a complicated, muddy, interesting picture.” The figures and his comments appear in the center’s 2 September 2026 summary.

What a plan to continue a chatbot depends on
A wish for a companion to remain available does not itself keep the service running. The Guardian’s 13 October 2026 report said continuation may depend on subscription payments, inactivity rules and account-transfer terms. It reported that ChatGPT, Claude and Replika did not specifically address what happens to personalized chatbots after a user’s death; it also said free accounts close after a year of inactivity and that the services’ terms make accounts non-transferable.

Those statements describe the terms as reported on that date, not a guarantee of current policy. Service rules can change, and the relevant terms may depend on the product, account type and location. Anyone making a plan should check the service’s current account, inactivity, payment and transfer rules rather than assuming that a friend can inherit or operate the account.
The Guardian’s interviewees also raised whether informal chatbot “wills” have legal grounding. The reporting did not establish that they do. A written instruction, password handoff or request in a will should not be treated as a legal transfer of an account. Rules about credentials, privacy, inheritance and service accounts vary by jurisdiction and provider; the available reporting does not settle them.

Privacy and consent are part of the decision
Chat histories can contain intimate disclosures—sometimes things a user says they would not tell another person. Giving a friend or relative access could expose details the user shared in confidence, while deleting everything could remove conversations the user hoped would remain meaningful.
Psychologist and grief-tech expert Melissa Lunardi, chief clinical officer at Help Texts, cautioned: “There’s a big assumption being made that family members would want to interact with an AI companion bot.” A steward might be asked to preserve access, but that does not mean family members want to talk with the system, read its history or take responsibility for its upkeep. Their consent and boundaries belong in the plan too.

How to make the choice more concrete
An advance-planning workbook or end-of-life planner can provide a place to record wishes, but it cannot guarantee that a service will permit a transfer or continued access. The useful task is to make the wishes clear while leaving room for the people and service involved to say no.
- Write down the desired outcome. Say whether you want the account continued, used only as a record, restricted to selected conversations, or deleted. Avoid relying on a vague instruction to “keep it alive.”
- Name a willing steward, if continuation matters. Ask the person first. Specify what they may do, what they should not share, and whether they may stop if the role becomes uncomfortable.
- Set boundaries for access. Decide whether a steward may read the full history, use the chatbot without reading old chats, share anything with relatives, or give children access. Consider whether some conversations should be excluded or deleted.
- Check the service’s current terms and account controls. Confirm how inactivity, recurring payments, cancellation, deletion and account access work for your specific plan. Do not assume a password or written instruction overrides the service’s rules.
- Set a review point and an exit. State how long the arrangement should last, who can end it, what happens if nobody wants to continue, and whether the account and its stored data should then be deleted.
What grief research can—and cannot—tell us
Research into grief-related chatbots is still limited and does not establish a single effect for everyone. A 2023 study presented at ACM CHI explored mourners’ experiences with chatbot technology, including unfinished business, privacy and perceived emotional effects. It was qualitative research, not a clinical trial, so it cannot show that grief chatbots reliably help or harm people.
A September 2026 paper in the Journal of Responsible Technology argued that “deathbots” might offer partial ambiguity closure for some bereaved people, while also potentially producing confusing answers, prolonging rumination or encouraging dependence. That analysis does not justify a universal verdict. A person’s experience may depend on what they expect from the system, what it can actually provide and the support they have around them.
