OPC has no single banking meaning. Its expansion depends on the institution, the country, and the type of document it appears in. In a BNP Paribas India job listing it means Operational Permanent Controller. In Indian company law it means One Person Company. In an Emirates NBD India clearing policy it appears as an account label without an expansion, and in U.S. federal purchase-card administration it appears as A/OPC. Read the surrounding document before deciding what the letters stand for.
Why OPC has no single banking definition
Acronyms in banking are often local. A term used inside one bank’s risk team, one country’s company registry, or one government card program can look identical to a term used elsewhere while meaning something entirely different. None of the sources checked for this article establishes OPC as a standard, industry-wide banking term, and none of them defines a customer-facing payment product by that name.

The Reserve Bank of India’s published abbreviation lists do not supply a standard expansion for OPC either. That silence is useful, but it does not prove that no Reserve Bank document or Indian bank has ever used the letters. Treat the lists as a helpful starting point, not as a complete dictionary.

The documented meanings at a glance
The table below separates the four contexts where OPC appears in verifiable material. The meanings are not competing services. They describe a job title, a legal company form, an internal ledger label, and a government role.
#1 Best Overall
| Context | What OPC stands for | Type of document | Jurisdiction or institution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank control function | Operational Permanent Controller | Job description | BNP Paribas India |
| Business structure | One Person Company | Statute (Companies Act, 2013) | India, company law |
| Cheque-clearing ledger | Not stated in the policy reviewed | Internal policy template | Emirates NBD India |
| Government purchase cards | A/OPC: Agency/Organization Program Coordinator | Federal training lesson | U.S. General Services Administration |
Operational Permanent Controller (BNP Paribas India)
BNP Paribas India’s job description for “Operational Permanent Controller – AM” places the role in its Operational Permanent Control function. The role supports business and functional teams on controls and addresses operational risks, among other cross-functional topics. The description states that the OPC is responsible for “ensuring the proper execution of controls to cover operational risks, for participating in the detection of risk areas, and for proposing, monitoring and implementing corrective actions.” The page does not name an individual, so the sentence should be attributed to the job description itself.
This is the meaning BNP Paribas India uses for that title. It is not a definition that applies across the banking sector, and other banks may use the same letters for different roles or not at all.
One Person Company (Indian company law)
The Companies Act, 2013, published by India’s Ministry of Corporate Affairs, allows a company to be formed by one person as a One Person Company, which the Act describes as a private company. The Act also provides for a nominated person who becomes the member if the sole subscriber dies or becomes incapable of contracting. You may encounter this term in discussions of business banking, but it is a legal entity form, not a bank account type or a banking product.

Questions about forming, running, or complying with an OPC should be checked against the current text of the Act and the Ministry’s official materials, or taken to a qualified professional. Rules on company formation are subject to amendment, and this article does not replace that check.
OPC clearing-account labels (Emirates NBD India)
Emirates NBD India’s policy template for the collection of cheques and instruments refers to two accounts: “OPC–Clearing Suspense” and “OPC Clearing Settlement.” According to the policy, the first records clearing cheques daily, and the second processes accounting entries that reflect the net clearing amount. The policy also covers reviewing balances and reconciling them as part of the clearing process.
The policy does not spell out what OPC stands for. If you see these labels on a statement or in a reconciliation report, the expansion is not established by the document, so do not assume one. Ask the bank directly or check its glossary.

A/OPC (U.S. government purchase cards)
The U.S. General Services Administration’s SmartPay training uses “A/OPC” for the Agency/Organization Program Coordinator. In that training, the role oversees the agency’s purchase-card program, develops procedures where needed, and acts as liaison between the account holder, the contractor bank, agency management, and GSA’s Payment Solutions Service Center.
A/OPC is a government purchase-card role. It is not evidence for a general retail-banking meaning of OPC, and it should not be read into a personal bank statement or a commercial card letter.

Some low-authority online explainers offer expansions such as “Online Payment Council,” “Online Payment Channel,” or “Open Payment Cloud.” None of these is supported by the primary sources reviewed, and the explainer pages that offer them give conflicting definitions for the same letters. Do not repeat them in customer communication, internal documents, or search content.
How to identify the meaning on a document you have
- Look at the document type. A job listing points to a staffing role. A reference to a company’s registered form, such as “One Person Company,” points to company law. A statement, clearing report, or account listing points to a bank-internal label. A purchase-card context with agency or program language points to A/OPC.
- Identify the issuer. Find the bank, employer, registry, or agency named on the document and match the term to that institution only.
- Search the document for an expansion or definition. If the document defines OPC, use that definition. If it does not, the Emirates NBD policy example shows that a label can appear without one.
- Check an official glossary or ask the source. For bank statements and payment screens, ask the issuing bank’s customer service team or consult its published glossary. For company-law questions, use the Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ current materials.
- Do not infer the meaning from the letters alone. A matching acronym in a different country or sector is not evidence of the same meaning.
If you are reading a bank letter or a payment screen and cannot identify the context, the safest course is to ask the bank to explain the term in writing before taking any action on it.
