Enabling a setting activates a feature, grants access, or allows an action; disabling it deactivates or blocks one. But the label alone does not tell you what is affected: a switch may apply to one app, several apps, a signed-in user, or an organization-managed device. Check the setting’s scope and explanation before changing it, especially when it controls access to personal files or a security safeguard.
What do “enable” and “disable” mean?
These labels describe a state change, not a universal outcome. Enabling might make a feature available or permit an action. Disabling might block that capability, remove access, or turn off a protective control. What actually changes depends on the specific setting, operating system, app, and any management policy that applies.
Before changing a switch, identify the feature it controls and whether the control applies globally, per app, per user, or through an organization. A setting’s explanatory text can clarify what will stop working or what protection will change.
How do permissions affect functionality and privacy?
File-system access can help an app work—and expose content
Microsoft explains that Windows apps with file-system access may be able to use files and folders available to the signed-in user. Access can support an app’s features, but it can also expose personal content. Windows provides global and per-app controls, though some desktop programs are not listed and must be managed in their own settings. See Microsoft’s Windows app-permissions guidance for the relevant controls and exceptions.

A broad permission and an app permission may both matter
Microsoft’s documentation for Windows Subsystem for Android describes two permission layers: the subsystem must have permission, and an individual mobile app may also need its own permission. Removing a subsystem privacy permission also removes it for mobile apps that request that permission. This example applies to Windows Subsystem for Android; it is not a general description of all Android or Windows permission behavior. The subsystem’s status and available features can depend on the applicable Windows environment. See Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Android settings documentation.
What can happen when you disable a security control?
User Account Control adds an approval step
Windows User Account Control (UAC) prompts users to approve or deny changes that require administrator-level privileges. Microsoft Support says UAC is designed to prevent unauthorized changes to Windows; the prompt is a protective checkpoint, not a guarantee against every malicious change. Microsoft recommends the stronger notification option for people who routinely install software or visit unfamiliar websites. Its UAC settings guidance describes the notification choices.

Local Security Authority protection can require a restart
Microsoft says Local Security Authority (LSA) protection helps prevent credential theft by blocking untrusted software from running inside LSA or accessing its memory. Microsoft’s documentation describes it as enabled by default on devices, but defaults can vary with Windows build or managed configuration. A reboot is required after changing the setting. If Windows reports that incompatible software was blocked, review the notification and address the compatibility issue rather than casually turning off protection. Details are in Microsoft’s LSA protection documentation.
Android Advanced Protection Mode can restrict features
Android Developers’ Android 16 documentation describes Advanced Protection Mode as a security posture that may restrict features to reduce the attack surface. Apps may need to account for behavior changes when a user enables it. This documentation does not establish that the mode is available on every Android device. See Android Developers’ Advanced Protection Mode overview.

Policy can change what an enabled or disabled setting does
Windows policy settings provide another reason not to infer behavior from a label alone. Microsoft documents policy-dependent UAC behavior, including whether elevation prompts appear on the secure desktop. Applicability depends on Windows edition and version, so these policy details are not consumer step-by-step instructions. See Microsoft’s UAC policy settings documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether to turn a setting on or off
- Identify the exact control. Read its name and explanation, and note which feature, permission, or action it governs.
- Check its scope. Determine whether it applies globally, to one app, to a user, or through an organization policy.
- Weigh the trade-off. Consider what functionality will stop or become available and whether the change affects privacy or protection.
- Change one relevant control at a time. Then test the app or task the setting was meant to affect.
- Record the previous state. If expected behavior or protection is lost, restore the earlier setting where possible.
- Check for extra steps. Some changes may require administrator approval or a restart; Microsoft documents a reboot after changing LSA protection.
Not every platform offers the same rollback behavior, and an organization may manage or restrict settings on a work device. If a control is unavailable or keeps reverting, check with the device administrator rather than assuming the change has taken effect.
