Also verify what “duplex” covers: printing, scanning, copying, or only one of those functions.
What an auto duplex printer does
In normal desktop use, the printer feeds a sheet, prints the first side, sends it through a reversing or recirculating paper path, and prints the second side. The completed sheet exits in page order. Different printers use different internal mechanisms, so duplex speed and paper handling vary by model.
Automatic duplexing is a paper-handling feature. It does not by itself mean that the printer can scan both sides, copy both sides, use every tray, or print on every type of media.
Automatic versus manual two-sided printing

How automatic duplex printing works
- The tray feeds a sheet.
- The printer prints the first side.
- The sheet enters the duplexing or reversing path.
- Internal rollers turn or redirect it.
- The second side is printed.
- The sheet exits with the intended sequence.
The extra paper-path operation can make duplex output slower than simplex (one-sided) output and can increase sensitivity to curled, damp, heavy, or unsupported paper. Some inkjet drivers offer a slower or reduced-ink duplex mode to limit smearing and drying problems; Brother describes these options in its two-sided and booklet printing guidance.
Duplex printing is not duplex scanning

A reversing ADF can still scan both sides automatically, but it turns the original internally and may take longer than a single-pass design. Current Brother product pages list printing and feeder capabilities separately—for example, the MFC-J5010DW and MFC-J5920DW.
Long-edge and short-edge binding
Binding controls how the reverse side is oriented.
- Long-edge binding: pages turn like a conventional book. It is usually right for portrait reports.
- Short-edge binding: pages turn across the short edge, like a notepad or some landscape presentations.
Driver labels include “flip on long edge,” “long-edge binding,” “two-sided long edge,” and similar variants. For landscape documents, the correct choice depends on how you intend to turn the pages. Print a two-page test first; a wrong choice makes every reverse page appear upside down.
Paper sizes and media limitations
Duplex support is never a guarantee that every paper type or size will work. Check the exact model manual for supported sizes, weights, trays, and media types.

- Plain or thin paper is the most commonly supported duplex media.
- Envelopes, labels, index cards, glossy photo paper, and heavy cardstock are often simplex-only.
- Some printers duplex only from the main tray.
- Borderless printing may be disabled in duplex mode.
- The duplex weight limit can be lower than the simplex limit.
One Brother model documents automatic duplexing for plain paper from 60–105 g/m² (approximately 16–28 lb for the stated paper category); that is a model-specific example, not an industry limit. See the Brother duplex media requirements. Another Brother guide notes that borderless printing is unavailable during duplex printing on that model: model-specific restrictions.
Paper basis weights are not directly interchangeable across all paper categories, so use the manufacturer’s stated units and specifications rather than assuming every “28 lb” stock behaves identically.
Inkjet versus laser duplex printers

Neither type is automatically cheaper or faster. Compare the specific model’s duplex speed, consumable yields, color usage, purchase price, and recommended monthly volume.
How to enable auto duplex printing
Windows
- Open the document and choose Print.
- Select the printer.
- Open Printer Properties, Printing Preferences, or Preferences.
- Choose Two-Sided, Duplex, or Print on Both Sides.
- Select long-edge or short-edge binding.
- Confirm the paper size and media type, then print a short test.
If Windows 11 shows only “Two-sided Printing (Manually),” that does not prove the hardware lacks automatic duplexing. HP recommends refreshing printer settings or removing and re-adding the printer when the automatic option is missing: HP’s Windows troubleshooting steps.

macOS
- Choose File → Print.
- Expand the dialog if necessary.
- Enable Two-Sided.
- Choose the binding or layout option when offered.
- Check the preview and print a two-page test.
Labels and available controls depend on macOS, the application, AirPrint versus the manufacturer’s driver, and the selected media. A full manufacturer driver package may expose controls that a basic driver does not; Brother notes these operating-system and model differences in its support guide.
Mobile and printer-panel printing
Mobile apps and printer control panels may expose only a simple two-sided toggle. If binding direction, media selection, or duplex scanning matters, configure the job from the full desktop driver or the printer’s documented interface.
Why auto duplex printing fails
Only manual two-sided printing appears
- Install the manufacturer’s full driver instead of a generic driver.
- Confirm automatic duplex is listed in the exact model specification.
- Check that the duplex unit is installed and the rear cover is seated.
- Try plain Letter or A4 paper.
- Reopen Printing Preferences, test another application, then remove and re-add the printer if necessary.
Reverse pages are upside down
Change the binding direction: long edge normally suits portrait book-style documents; short edge suits top-turning or some landscape layouts.
Paper jams in duplex mode
Use supported, flat, dry paper; stay below the tray limit; verify the size and tray; and inspect that the duplexer is seated. Curled or unsuitable media is a common cause. Brother’s guidance recommends flattening curled paper and using supported plain or thin stock: inkjet guidance and media requirements.

Ink smears or pages curl
Use recommended plain paper, select a slower or reduced-ink duplex setting if available, lower print quality when appropriate, and let pages rest before stacking. Avoid glossy or coated stock unless the manual explicitly permits duplexing.
Borderless mode disappears
This can be an intentional duplex restriction rather than a fault. Some paper paths require margins and cannot maintain borderless output on both sides.

It is usually worthwhile if you print reports, manuals, contracts, or school work in multi-page batches; want consistent page order; or intend to reduce sheet consumption. It is less important for occasional one-page printing, photo-heavy use, or specialty media that must be printed single-sided.
Duplexing can reduce paper use, but only when you select two-sided output. It does not automatically halve ink or toner consumption, and covers, inserts, blank separators, and unsupported pages may remain simplex. The EPA explains the paper-saving benefit and advises confirming support in the manual or driver: automatic duplexing guidance. For a 100-page document printed entirely duplex, the theoretical minimum is 50 sheets; real jobs can use more.

Auto duplex buying checklist
- Specification explicitly says automatic duplex or automatic two-sided printing.
- Duplex scanning, duplex ADF, and single-pass scanning are listed separately if needed.
- Your required sizes—Letter, Legal, A4, A5, Executive, or custom—are supported in duplex mode.
- Your media weight and type are supported; verify cardstock, labels, envelopes, and photo stock individually.
- Duplex pages-per-minute figures are available, not just simplex speed.
- The required tray supports duplexing.
- Paper capacity matches your workload.
- Ink or toner yields and replacement-part costs fit your volume.
- Windows, macOS, mobile, AirPrint, or Mopria support matches your devices.
- Recommended monthly volume, jam access, and serviceability are acceptable.
Booklet printing is a separate mode
Booklet printing imposes pages in a folded sequence; it is not ordinary two-sided printing. It may require specific paper sizes, margins, page counts, and manual folding after output. Use booklet mode only when you intend to assemble folded sheets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is duplex printing the same as double-sided printing?
They describe the same output goal, but “two-sided” does not reveal whether printing is automatic. Look for “automatic duplex” or “automatic two-sided printing.”
Does an auto duplex printer scan both sides?
Not necessarily. Check separately for a duplex ADF, duplex scan, or single-pass duplex scan specification.
Can every printer duplex cardstock or glossy paper?
No. Duplex media limits are model-specific and often exclude heavy, coated, photographic, label, or envelope stock.

Why are the back pages upside down?

“Duplex” alone is not a complete specification. Confirm automatic printing, your required paper sizes and weights, and separate duplex-scanning capabilities before buying or troubleshooting.
