Underdog is an invite-only AI assistant beta for Mac and Windows PCs, not a broadly available app or a verified privacy breakthrough. TechCrunch reported on October 6, 2026, that its model runs on the user’s device and that the service encrypts keys for accounts a user authorizes it to access. Those are meaningful design claims, but the report provides no independent security audit, data-flow analysis, or published benchmark results.
What launched, and who can use it?
Conway Research launched Underdog as an invite-only beta on Monday, according to Julie Bort’s October 6, 2026 TechCrunch report. At the time of that report, the assistant ran on Mac and Windows PCs. Linux, iPhone, and Android versions were described as coming soon; the report does not say they had shipped. It gives no system requirements, so users should not assume a particular computer configuration will run the beta.

The launch article mentions Instinct and Muse in its framing, but does not compare their features or privacy practices with Underdog’s. It therefore cannot establish that Underdog is more private than either competitor.

What does “on-device” mean for Underdog?
TechCrunch reports that Underdog runs its model on the user’s device. Local inference can reduce the need to send prompts to a remote model service, but that fact alone does not establish that every part of an assistant’s operation stays local. The launch report does not provide a full account of data flows, explain how each integration handles information, or specify what data may be sent elsewhere.

The report also says Underdog encrypts keys to email and other accounts that users authorize it to access. It does not describe the encryption design, how keys are stored or used, or the protections around connected services. Encryption of account keys is a reported feature, not proof that all account data, actions, or integrations are private end to end.
What is known about its model and performance?
The beta reportedly uses a 27-billion-parameter reasoning model fine-tuned from Qwen3.8-27B. TechCrunch reports that it can handle everyday assistant tasks such as shopping research and answering math homework questions.

Founder Sigil Wen says the model compares favorably with Claude Opus 4.6 on some benchmarks. The report names no benchmark suites, scores, test conditions, or independent evaluations, so that comparison remains Wen’s claim—not an established finding that Underdog matches or outperforms Claude Opus 4.6.
Husky, the inference engine
Wen built Husky, the inference engine used by Underdog. He says it moves less data between a computer’s main chip and graphics chip than competing on-device engines. TechCrunch publishes no measurements or independent test to substantiate that efficiency claim.

How strong is the privacy claim?
TechCrunch’s headline calls Underdog “the most private” competitor of its kind, but the reporting supports a narrower conclusion: the product is described as performing model inference on-device and encrypting keys for authorized accounts. The article supplies no independent security audit, threat model, or published technical analysis establishing how the product behaves across its full set of actions and integrations. There is not enough evidence in the launch report to rank Underdog’s privacy against other assistants.
Wen presents privacy and capability as compatible, saying, “You don’t need to sacrifice your privacy for the capability because they’re just as capable.” That is his position; the report does not provide independent results that verify the capability comparison.

How does Underdog plan to make money?
TechCrunch reports that Underdog will be free at first and will not carry ads. Wen says local inference keeps the company’s costs low. The planned revenue source is a small percentage of payments the assistant makes through Stripe’s payment rails, described in the article as similar to an interchange fee.

The report gives no fee rate, eligibility rules, transaction terms, or launch date for payment features. This is a proposed business model, not evidence that a transaction-fee program is currently operating. Wen said, “I don’t have to charge you a subscription to run this because my costs are so super low.”
