What is the latest Uncharted Waters Origin mates tier list?
The latest located published ranking is Pocket Gamer’s list, updated September 4, 2026 and labeled version 4.0803. It divides mates into S, A, B, and C tiers. These are Pocket Gamer’s judgments, not official in-game tiers: the game assigns grades based on abilities, while a publication’s tier reflects its own comparison.

LINE Games announced Grade S James Lancaster and Grade S paid mate Melati on September 10, six days after Pocket Gamer’s update. The announcement describes James as gameplay-hireable, but does not compare either mate’s performance with the rest of the roster. Neither appears in the September 4 list, so this snapshot cannot establish an October placement for them. LINE Games’ announcement is the source for their grades and acquisition framing; the Pocket Gamer tier list provides the dated ranking.

In Pocket Gamer’s September snapshot, the S-tier choices are the publication’s highest-ranked group. The full list is retained below so you can check a specific mate without treating the tier as a universal recommendation.

Which mates should I recruit?
Start with the job your fleet needs, not the letter beside a mate’s name. LINE Games’ official guide says mates provide aid while sailing and groups their jobs into Adventure, Trade, and Combat. It describes Skills, Effects, Expertise, and Languages as distinct parts of mate capability. Skills are active in naval or city combat, Effects are passive, and Expertise is a main job-specialized ability. The guide also notes that duplicate skills assigned to one ship can increase their strength. See the official Mate guide and official Mate Skills guide.
- Adventure: consider the expertise your exploration needs, such as Nature, Aesthetics, Scouting, or Supply.
- Trade: compare Purchasing, Sales, Negotiation, and Trade expertise against the way you trade.
- Combat: look at Artillery, Ramming, Support, or Melee expertise, as well as the active skills and passive effects relevant to your ships.
These examples are categories in the official guide, not a claim that every listed mate excels at each activity. Compare an individual mate’s actual skills and expertise with your intended use.

Why cabin compatibility matters
A strong mate can contribute little if assigned to the wrong cabin. The official guide says a compatible cabin lets a mate’s abilities affect the ship or fleet; assigning a mate to an incompatible cabin reduces Expertise by 50%. An unassigned mate’s skills and expertise do not affect play. The guide distinguishes ship expertise from fleet expertise, so check whether a benefit applies to one vessel or across the fleet before choosing where to place someone.

For a practical comparison, check the mate’s job and abilities, the cabin available on the ship, and the scope of the expertise. A nominally lower-tier mate who fits the job and cabin you need may be more useful to your current fleet than a higher-tier recruit without a compatible role.

What do grade and tier actually tell you?
LINE Games’ Chronicle guide lists Helen Raspberry as Grade S / Trade, Antonio Malatesta as Grade A / Combat, and Louise de Beaujoyeulx as a special Grade S / Adventure mate. Pocket Gamer places Helen in S tier, Louise in A tier, and Antonio in S tier. The difference for Antonio makes the distinction concrete: an in-game grade and a publication’s comparative tier are separate labels, not competing versions of one official ranking.
The official Chronicle mate guide says Louise can be recruited at specified Port Inns after viewing the Chronicle ending. It also identifies her as a special mate, so her route differs from a straightforward general recommendation to hire by tier.
How should acquisition and growth affect your choice?
The general Mate guide, last updated in 2023, says mates are hired at city inns; hiring and growth costs vary by grade. It describes immediate hiring with Blue Gems or negotiation using Friendship and Ducats, and notes that some mates join through Admiral Chronicles. Because these are guide descriptions from 2023, check the current in-game interface and economy before relying on granular hiring or cost details.

Before committing resources, weigh the mate’s relevant expertise and cabin fit alongside acquisition route, language or hiring access where applicable, and the cost and effort of growth. Grade alone does not establish universal value, and a tier list does not account for the exact needs of your fleet.
