If the player fills the display but the picture does not, that is usually an aspect-ratio mismatch—not a fullscreen failure. Keeping the whole image visible can leave bars at the sides; zooming may fill more of the panel, but it can crop the picture.
Enter fullscreen mode in the player
- YouTube on a computer: Start the video and select the fullscreen control at the lower-right corner of the player. YouTube notes that embedded videos on other websites may not offer fullscreen; if the control is missing, open the video on YouTube instead. See YouTube’s computer fullscreen instructions.
- Netflix on a computer: Select the fullscreen control in the playback window. If Netflix will not enter fullscreen, refresh the browser and try again, as Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance recommends.
Fullscreen expands the player; it does not change the video’s shape. YouTube says its standard computer player ratio is 16:9 and that the player adapts to each video’s aspect ratio. A video with a different shape may have padding around it. Read YouTube’s explanation of video resolution and aspect ratios.

Why an ultrawide screen can still show bars
A monitor and a video can have different aspect ratios. When the source image is narrower than the ultrawide display, unused space may remain at the sides even in fullscreen. This can be normal: fitting the entire image without changing its proportions preserves the composition.
Netflix explains that black bars can appear when a title was filmed in a format wider than the screen; the bars preserve that format and prevent stretching. See Netflix’s explanation of black bars. Bars alone do not mean that fullscreen has failed.

- DO MORE ON ONE SCREEN: See every detail on the wider display featuring a 21:9 aspect ratio; Ultra WQHD provides the simplest way to maximize screen real estate and experience truly seamless multitasking on just one screen.Brightness (Typical) : 300 cd/㎡. Static Contrast Ratio 3000:1.
- ENJOY A BILLION COLORS W/ INCREDIBLE DEPTH: With HDR10 that displays over 1 billion colors compared to 16.7 million for typical SDR technology, dark colors are darker and the brightest are even brighter; Content is experienced as the creator intended
- CARE FOR YOUR EYES DAY and NIGHT: An ambient light sensor on the monitor detects lighting in your workstation and automatically adjusts brightness; Eye Saver Mode minimizes excessive blue light, and Flicker Free relieves eye strain
- SEE CONTENT SMOOTHER, EVEN GAMING: A faster than average refresh rate updates the image on screen more often every second; 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur when playing games, watching videos, or working on design projects
- STAY IN SYNC WITH THE ACTION: AMD Radeon FreeSync keeps the refresh rate of your monitor and graphics card in sync to reduce image tearing for a superfluid entertainment experience; Watch movies and play games without interruptions
Choose between the full picture and a fuller screen
- Keep the whole image: Leave the video at its normal proportions. You may see bars, but the edges of the picture remain visible and objects are not stretched.
- Zoom or fill: If the player or display provides a zoom or fill option, try it to use more of the screen. This can trim content at the edges. Netflix notes that zooming is available on some mobile devices and may cut off the sides; options vary by device.
- Avoid stretching: A setting that changes the image proportions can distort faces and objects. Compare the whole image before and after changing a mode, especially near the edges.
There is no single setting that fills every ultrawide display while preserving every frame and the original proportions. The right choice depends on the video’s shape and whether you prefer visible bars or cropped edges.
Tell a normal mismatch from a playback problem
The player is fullscreen, but bars remain
If the controls and player have expanded but bars are still visible, the video may simply have a different shape from the monitor. Check whether the picture looks proportionate and whether the full frame is visible before changing zoom or display settings.

The video looks enlarged or cut off
Check the device’s video-output setting and the display’s aspect ratio, screen size, or picture settings. Netflix identifies these as possible causes of zoomed or cropped playback in its zoomed or cropped video guidance. Restore a normal or original-size mode if you want the full frame back.
Netflix will not enter fullscreen
Refresh the browser first, then use the fullscreen control in the playback window. Netflix treats fullscreen failure separately from black bars and zoomed or cropped video; its broader video troubleshooting page covers these as distinct issues.
