Ultra-thin phones can feel lighter and sleeker in the hand, but a thinner body may leave less room for battery and camera hardware. Whether that trade is worth it depends on the specific models and what matters most to you: pocket comfort, battery endurance, or camera flexibility. Official specifications illustrate the trade-offs, but they do not establish how every slim phone performs in everyday use.
How much thinner—and lighter—are they?
Two current examples show how slim phones compare with standard models, but they also show why thickness alone is not enough to predict comfort. Apple lists the 2025 iPhone Air at 5.64 mm thick and 165 g. Samsung lists the Galaxy S25 Edge at 5.8 mm and 163 g, compared with the standard Galaxy S25 at 7.2 mm and 162 g. The thinner Samsung is slightly heavier than the standard model. The phones also differ in their overall dimensions and display sizes, so these figures do not establish which feels more comfortable in a pocket or hand.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Camera protrusions and the width and height of a phone can affect how it carries, too. Slimness is one part of the fit, not a guarantee that a device will feel smaller or lighter overall. Apple lists iPhone Air dimensions and weight; Samsung compares the Galaxy S25 Edge with the S25 series.

Samsung’s within-family comparison lists the Galaxy S25 Edge with a 3,900 mAh battery and up to 24 hours of video playback. The standard S25 is listed at 4,000 mAh and up to 29 hours; the larger S25+ at 4,900 mAh and up to 30 hours. These are Samsung’s estimates, not results from an independent, controlled test, and they should not be treated as a guarantee of real-world screen time.

Apple estimates up to 27 hours of video playback for iPhone Air, or up to 40 hours when used with its optional MagSafe Battery. That accessory adds an item to carry, which may offset some of the convenience of choosing a very slim phone. Apple’s figures are manufacturer estimates, not a direct comparison with Samsung’s playback claims. See Apple’s iPhone Air specifications.
Samsung says the Edge uses a reconfigured vapor chamber that is 10% larger than the one in the Galaxy S25+ to suit the phone’s slim profile. That is the manufacturer’s description of its thermal design, not independent evidence of how the phone performs under sustained workloads. Samsung Newsroom explains the design.

What camera flexibility do you give up?
Lens coverage and zoom range tell you more about framing options than megapixel counts alone. Samsung lists the Galaxy S25 Edge with a 200 MP wide camera and a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, plus up to 2x optical-quality zoom. The standard S25 adds a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. That dedicated telephoto lens gives the standard model a different option for distant subjects; it does not by itself prove that one phone takes better photos in every situation.
Apple lists iPhone Air with a 48 MP Fusion rear camera system. The specification does not make megapixel count a reliable stand-in for image quality or for the range of framing choices a camera system offers. Compare the actual lenses and zoom capabilities you use rather than assuming a higher number means better results. Do slim phones give up flagship features?
Not necessarily. Samsung lists the Galaxy S25 Edge with a 6.7-inch QHD+ display at 120 Hz and an IP68 resistance rating. Apple lists iPhone Air with a 6.5-inch OLED ProMotion display and IP68. Those examples show that a slim body can still come with a large, high-refresh-rate screen and a stated water- and dust-resistance rating.
A rating is a specification, not a promise that a phone is indestructible or immune to damage. Check the exact model’s published features rather than assuming that thinness means a small display, missing protection, or reduced capability. How to decide whether an ultra-thin phone is worth it
- Prioritize the feel in hand: A thinner profile may appeal if slimness is your main reason to upgrade, but compare the phone’s full dimensions and weight as well.
- Prioritize long stretches away from a charger: Compare the exact models’ battery details and manufacturer playback estimates. Treat “up to” figures as estimates, not a promise for your routine.
- Prioritize camera reach: Check whether the phone has a dedicated telephoto lens and what optical zoom it offers. A large megapixel figure does not answer that question.
- Account for accessories: If you plan to use a battery accessory, consider whether carrying and attaching it erases the convenience you wanted from a thin phone.
- Check the features you rely on: Screen size, refresh rate, and the stated resistance rating vary by model; slimness alone tells you none of those details.
The published figures above come from Apple and Samsung. They do not amount to an independent cross-brand test or establish broad real-world battery or camera outcomes, so compare the particular phones you are considering against your own priorities.
