As of October 17, 2026, Racket: Nx is the better documented choice for VR multiplayer. Its Steam listing explicitly includes online competitive PvP, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. Ultimechs is a distinctive mech-and-ball arena game, but Resolution Games has announced that online multiplayer will end on October 20, 2026, after which the game will become single-player-only. That gives Ultimechs multiplayer a very short remaining window.

This is a feature and service-status comparison, not a hands-on review. Publicly available information does not establish current player counts, matchmaking speed, regional activity, latency or the day-to-day quality of either game’s online experience.

Quick verdict

Question Ultimechs Racket: Nx Better choice
Is online multiplayer documented? Yes, but online support is scheduled to end on October 20, 2026. Yes. Steam lists Online PvP and Online Co-op. Racket: Nx
What is the core sport? Piloting a mech and striking a ball with rocket-powered GauntJets toward the opposing goal. Racquetball combined with Breakout inside a large pinball-like arena. Depends on taste
Competitive play Team-based arena scoring while multiplayer services remain active. Online competitive PvP is explicitly listed. Racket: Nx for long-term planning
Cooperative play Not a lasting option after the announced service change. Online co-op is explicitly listed. Racket: Nx
Cross-platform play Not established by the available information. Steam lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer, but not every supported pairing. Racket: Nx, subject to platform verification
Play after October 20, 2026 Single-player only, according to the announcement; the game is also scheduled for delisting. Online modes remain listed by Steam, with current service health still unverified. Racket: Nx

If your priority is playing online with friends beyond this month, choose Racket: Nx. Ultimechs makes sense only if you specifically want its mech-arena concept and intend to play multiplayer before the announced cutoff, while accepting that availability and timing must be checked on your platform.

What Ultimechs is

A mech arena built around scoring goals

Ultimechs is a free-to-play VR arena sports game from Resolution Games. You remotely pilot a mech and use rocket-powered fists called GauntJets to hit a ball toward the other team’s goal. The premise is closer to a physical arena sport than to a conventional racquet game: positioning, timing and striking the ball are framed through a giant mechanical avatar.

  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

That concept gives Ultimechs a clear identity for groups that want something theatrical and immediately readable in VR. You are not swinging a traditional racket; you are controlling powered fists and trying to direct a ball into a goal. The available description also references an Arcade Mode update, so the game has offered a nonstandardized way to practice or play outside its headline match structure.

Supported hardware listed by the developer

Resolution Games’ game description lists Pico Neo 3, Pico 4, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest Pro and SteamVR. Hardware and store availability can change, so check the current listing for the exact headset and regional edition you intend to use. The list establishes that the game was presented across several standalone and PC-VR ecosystems; it does not, by itself, guarantee that every store version still offers the same online services.

What Racket: Nx is

Racquetball, Breakout and a pinball arena

Racket: Nx is described on Steam as racquetball meeting Breakout inside a giant pinball-like arena. You use a racket to strike targets and keep the ball moving through an enclosed environment rather than playing on a conventional court. The combination gives the game a recognizable sports foundation while adding arcade-style geometry and target clearing.

Documented online and solo modes

The Steam listing names two multiplayer choices: competitive PvP and cooperative play. It also labels the game with Online PvP, Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer. For solo players, the listing identifies a campaign of handcrafted levels and an endless runner. Those are storefront-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every matchmaking queue is busy at every hour.

The official product site uses the name Racket:Next and describes it as descended from Racket: Nx. Storefront names and product identity can change, so use the exact title shown by the store and platform you plan to use when checking compatibility or purchasing.

Why Racket: Nx wins the multiplayer comparison

It has the broader documented mode set

Racket: Nx has explicit evidence for both sides of the usual multiplayer decision. If you want to compete against another player, its listing says Online PvP. If you want to cooperate, it says Online Co-op. Ultimechs’ central appeal is team-based arena scoring, but the announced retirement of online multiplayer changes that from a continuing feature into a near-term opportunity.

It is the safer choice for a recurring group

A regular VR group needs a game that can still be used for future sessions. Buying Ultimechs immediately before October 20, 2026, carries a known service-date risk: the developer says online multiplayer support will be retired and the game will transition to a single-player-only experience. Racket: Nx has no equivalent retirement notice in the information available here, so it is the more defensible choice for a group that expects to play next month or later.

Cross-platform multiplayer is at least documented

Steam lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer for Racket: Nx. That is useful if friends own different supported headsets, but it does not identify every platform pairing, account requirement or current status of each connection. Treat it as a reason to investigate, not as permission to promise that any two devices will connect.

When Ultimechs could still be the right pick

You want its specific mech-sport fantasy

Feature breadth is not the same as personal appeal. Someone who wants to pilot a mech, launch rocket-powered punches and score against a goal may prefer Ultimechs’ physical fantasy to Racket: Nx’s racket-and-target format. If your group is arranging a session before the announced deadline, that distinctive premise may be enough to justify trying it.

You primarily want a solo game after the cutoff

Resolution Games’ announcement says players will still be able to enter the arena in single-player mode after multiplayer services end on October 20, 2026. That means the title is not described as becoming unusable; its planned post-cutoff state is single-player-only. The same announcement reports a delisting on October 20, so confirm the current store status and access rules before treating it as a future solo purchase.

You understand the date is an announced event, not a guarantee of its final implementation

The October 20 date was announced in advance. It should not be treated as proof, by itself, that the shutdown and delisting happened exactly as scheduled. If you are reading this on or after October 20, verify the latest developer announcement and storefront status before spending money or planning a multiplayer event.

How the two games differ in a multiplayer session

Competitive play

Racket: Nx is the clearer fit for a player who specifically asks for online competition because its Steam page names competitive PvP. The information available does not specify ranking systems, match formats, player-count limits, skill divisions or tournament features, so do not infer those details from the PvP label.

Ultimechs frames competition around opposing goals and mech-controlled strikes. That can appeal to players who want an arena match with a strong team-sport metaphor. Its problem is not a lack of a recognizable competitive concept; it is the scheduled end of the online service that carries that concept.

Cooperative play

Racket: Nx explicitly lists online co-op, making it the better documented option for two or more friends who want to work together rather than compete. The listing does not establish the exact team size, objective rotation or difficulty scaling, so check the in-game or store documentation for those specifics.

Ultimechs’ announcement removes it from the long-term co-op shortlist. Even if multiplayer is available before October 20, a group should not choose it for a continuing cooperative routine without accepting that the online component is scheduled to disappear.

Cross-platform groups

Racket: Nx has the strongest evidence for mixed-device groups because Steam labels it as cross-platform multiplayer. However, “cross-platform” is not a complete compatibility matrix. The available listing does not confirm which standalone headsets, PC-VR editions or store accounts can join one another, nor whether every pairing remains active.

No equivalent cross-platform claim is established here for Ultimechs. Its developer-listed hardware range shows broad platform targeting, but a list of supported devices is not the same thing as confirmed cross-play between all of them.

Ultimechs’ shutdown timeline and what it means

Before October 20, 2026

Multiplayer may still be available during the remaining period, but the date is close enough that a purchase should be treated as a short-term decision. Check the listing immediately before installing, make sure your friends are on compatible editions, and schedule sessions with the understanding that online support is due to end on October 20.

On and after October 20, 2026

The announcement says, “We want to let our players know that we’ll soon be retiring online multiplayer support for Ultimechs and will transition the game to a single-player-only experience.” It follows with: “You’ll still be able to jump into the arena and enjoy Ultimechs in single-player mode after multiplayer services end on October 20, 2026.” Resolution Games also announced that the game would be delisted on that date.

Those statements establish the planned direction: no continuing online matches, continued single-player access according to the announcement, and a scheduled delisting. They do not establish the final post-date store policy, whether previously installed copies will receive every future update, or whether regional storefronts will change at exactly the same time. Verify those points against the current announcement and store page.

Platform, headset and store checks

For an Ultimechs buyer

  • Confirm that your headset is one of the currently listed targets: Pico Neo 3, Pico 4, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest Pro or SteamVR.
  • Check whether the game is still listed in your region, especially if the date is October 20, 2026, or later.
  • Read the current service notice before assuming online multiplayer is available.
  • Decide whether single-player access would still have value if the online mode ends as announced.

For a Racket: Nx buyer

  • Use the exact store listing for your headset or PC-VR setup; the available evidence confirms Steam features but does not provide a complete hardware matrix.
  • Look for the Online PvP, Online Co-op and Cross-Platform Multiplayer labels on the relevant edition.
  • Confirm that your friends’ editions are part of a supported cross-platform pairing rather than assuming every VR device can connect.
  • Check the current listing for service status, because a feature label does not measure active matchmaking.

What is not known about the online experience

Player population

No reliable current player-count comparison is established. A game can list multiplayer and still have sparse queues at a particular hour, in a particular region or on a particular platform. Neither title should be called the more populated or healthier community based solely on the documented features.

Matchmaking and latency

The available information does not establish matchmaking wait times, server locations, disconnect rates, latency or netcode behavior. Those variables can matter more to a regular player than the name of a mode on a store page. Test during your normal play hours, or ask your group to confirm its own results, before treating either game as a dependable weekly meetup.

Store ratings

A Steam snapshot for Racket: Nx showed 95% positive among 493 reviews in October 2026. That is a mutable storefront snapshot, not a measurement of multiplayer activity, current matchmaking or a permanent quality score. It can inform general sentiment but cannot resolve the online-service question.

A practical decision framework

Choose Racket: Nx if most of these statements are true

  • You want an online game that documents both PvP and co-op.
  • You expect to keep playing with friends after October 20, 2026.
  • Your group may use different VR platforms and needs a documented cross-platform feature.
  • You are comfortable verifying the exact device pairing and current service status yourself.
  • You also want solo content in the form of a handcrafted campaign or endless runner.

Choose Ultimechs only if these conditions fit

  • The mech-and-GauntJet concept is the main reason you want the game.
  • Your group can play before the announced October 20 multiplayer cutoff.
  • You would still value its single-player arena after online services end.
  • You have confirmed current store availability and headset support for your region.
  • You accept that the announced delisting and service change make it a poor choice for a long-term online league.

Final recommendation

For multiplayer as a continuing feature, buy or play Racket: Nx. Its Steam listing documents the two modes most readers are choosing between—competitive PvP and online co-op—and also advertises cross-platform multiplayer, although exact pairings still need verification.

Ultimechs is the more unusual concept, not the better long-term multiplayer purchase. Its rocket-fisted mech sport may be worth a short session before October 20, 2026, but Resolution Games has announced that online multiplayer will be retired, the game will become single-player-only and the title will be delisted on that date. If you are reading after the deadline, recheck what actually happened rather than relying on the announced schedule.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
