That distinction matters because the better-documented Australian helicopter dispute involved the MRH-90 Taipan, a separate transport-helicopter type. Ukraine’s request for Taipans was rejected in January 2024. It does not establish why Ukraine reportedly changed its position on the Tigers.
What is known about the separate Taipan request?
An MRH-90 crashed near Lindeman Island on 28 July 2023 during Exercise Talisman Sabre, killing four aircrew. On 29 September 2023, Australia’s Defence Department said the fleet would not return to flying before its then-planned withdrawal in December 2024, while investigations continued. Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said Australia had started the Taipan disposal process months before the request arrived. He cited the time, resources and public expense needed to return the aircraft to flying condition, as well as the ongoing crash investigations. Australia’s plan was to disassemble the helicopters and sell spare parts. ABC reported on 18 January 2024 that Australia had formally rejected Ukraine’s request for the 45 MRH-90s. What Australia said about its helicopter fleet
In its 29 September 2023 announcement, Defence said the ADF would continue operating Tigers, Chinooks and MH-60R Seahawks, and that AH-64E Apaches would begin entering service from 2025. That was a historical announcement, not confirmation of the fleet’s status in 2026. The available sources do not establish the Tigers’ current availability or retirement schedule.
