The posts do not independently establish that the attack happened, confirm the amount, or identify the victim. They are leads circulating on social media, not confirmation from police or a credible original report. One discussion speculates about a Revolut connection, but there is no substantiated evidence in the available reporting that a data breach or any particular company caused or enabled the alleged attack.

“Wrench attack” is the established term used by police and researchers for physical violence or threats used to coerce someone into giving access to cryptocurrency. It can describe different forms of coercion; the term alone does not establish what happened in this particular allegation.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
Numbers about these attacks come from different methods and cover different geographies. A police-force search, an estimate compiled from open sources, and an individual case figure cannot be combined into a single reliable UK total.

The global estimates suggest a substantial increase in identified attacks, especially in 2025, but they should be read as a rise in attacks found through open sources—not as a complete count of every incident. In its June 2026 FOI response, West Mercia Police explained the recording problem directly: “There is no specific marker or tag on our crime management system for crimes involving the behaviour described by the requestor.” A force relying on searches of narrative records may miss incidents described in different language. Results from one force also cannot be treated as a national rate or added to other counts without checking for overlap and differences in method.
Academic research and police and intelligence reporting also flag under-reporting. One participant interviewed for an academic study described an earlier report to authorities this way: “From the start, it was ignored.” That is the interviewee’s account, not a finding about every police response, but it illustrates why recorded figures may not reflect all attacks.

Documented UK cases provide context, not confirmation
Hertfordshire case: five men sentenced
In a separate case, Hertfordshire Constabulary reported that an attack on a 36-year-old City worker began in Shoreditch on 3 July 2025. The victim was forced to accompany men to his home, later found himself injured, and discovered money missing from bank and crypto accounts. Police said account access involved facial verification and that Coinbase reported unusual activity. Five men were sentenced on 18 May 2026. The police account does not connect this case to the unverified allegation of an almost $800,000 loss.

Hackney case: most of the reported funds recovered
TRM Labs’ account of a separate 2024 knifepoint burglary in Hackney says $4.3 million was stolen and $4.1 million recovered during the Metropolitan Police investigation. It reports that three suspects were convicted in November 2025. The recovery is an outcome of that investigation, not evidence that victims can generally expect stolen crypto to be recovered.

How to read new claims about crypto violence
For any reported attack, check who is reporting it and keep these distinctions intact:
- Allegation versus confirmation: social-media repetition does not verify that an incident occurred or establish a loss amount. Look for a police statement or credible original reporting.
- Recorded count versus estimate: administrative figures may miss incidents if the offence is not separately tagged; open-source estimates depend on what researchers can identify publicly.
- Amount stolen versus amount recovered: these are different figures. A recovery in one investigated case does not guarantee recovery in another.
- Case status: a report, charge, ongoing investigation, and conviction describe different stages and should not be presented as interchangeable.
The available evidence supports concern about physical coercion targeting cryptocurrency users, while leaving the specific $800,000 claim unconfirmed. The July 2026 framework and the separate UK cases offer context for the threat, not proof of that alleged incident or of a connection to a particular company.
