UK seafood seasonality: which fish and shellfish are in season when

There is no single UK seafood season calendar that applies to every species. Wild fish and shellfish spawn at different times, and those timings vary by region. A fish caught months ago may still be sold frozen, while farmed salmon, trout or mussels do not follow the same seasonal pattern as wild stocks. Use seasonality as a guide to likely fresh availability, then verify the species, origin and catching or farming method with the seller.

The clearest species-specific warning in current guidance concerns fresh haddock: the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) advises avoiding it during the main breeding period in March and April, and choosing fish longer than 30 cm to reduce pressure on juvenile fish. That is a species example, not a blanket UK closed season.

Why UK seafood seasons are not one fixed calendar

“In season” can mean several different things: a wild stock is being landed, a species is at a natural peak, local boats have good availability, or shops can obtain the product through frozen or farmed supply. Those meanings are not interchangeable.

Wild spawning times differ

Each wild species has its own breeding cycle. Geography matters too: waters around Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, Northern Ireland and England do not have identical conditions or fishing patterns. A date that describes one fishery should not be presented as a national rule for every coast.

Catch date and sale date are different

Freshly landed seafood may reach a counter quickly, but frozen seafood can be stored and sold long after it was caught. A product being available in a month does not prove that the species is currently in its local fishing season. Ask whether the item is fresh, previously frozen or farmed.

Farmed seafood follows a different pattern

Farmed fish and shellfish are managed through production cycles rather than wild spawning calendars. Farmed salmon, rainbow trout and mussels can therefore be available when a comparable wild species is between fishing seasons. “Farmed” is not automatically better or worse; the production location, method and certification still matter.

The most reliable month-specific example: haddock

MCS advises avoiding fresh haddock in March and April, the main breeding period identified in its guidance. It also recommends choosing haddock larger than 30 cm, helping avoid fish that have not yet reached a larger size. This advice is intended to protect juvenile fish and should be read as a species-specific conservation recommendation, not as a legal closure covering all UK waters.

Period What the guidance says How to use it
March and April MCS identifies these as the main breeding months for haddock and advises avoiding fresh haddock. Choose another species, or ask for a clearly sourced alternative. If buying haddock at another time, check size, origin and method.
Other months No universal UK month-by-month list is established for every species by the sources used here. Check the current fishery, region and method rather than assuming a species is always in or out of season.

Do not turn the haddock example into a rule for cod, whiting, plaice, shellfish or any other fish. Their breeding and fishing patterns can be different.

What the Scottish seasonal calendar can—and cannot—tell you

Seafood from Scotland publishes a Scotland-specific calendar with three labels: Widely available, Variable availability and Prime Fishing Season. It includes haddock, cod, saithe, whiting, hake, monkfish, plaice, lemon sole, witch sole, megrim, herring, mackerel, farmed salmon, farmed rainbow trout, brown and velvet crab, langoustine, lobster, mussels, scallops, Pacific oyster, razor clams and squid.

The calendar is useful as a regional planning aid, but it is not a complete UK-wide schedule. The published text does not make the month assignments behind each visual bar reliably readable, so assigning particular months to each species would risk giving you false precision. Treat its categories as an indication of availability in Scotland and confirm the current position with a fishmonger or fishery.

Calendar label Meaning for a shopper Question to ask
Widely available The species is generally obtainable through the Scottish supply chain during the periods shown by the calendar. Is this specific fish Scottish, and was it wild-caught or farmed?
Variable availability Weather, landings, quotas, local conditions or supply can make availability inconsistent. Was it landed recently, previously frozen, or brought in from another region?
Prime Fishing Season The calendar identifies a period of stronger fishing activity for that species in Scotland. Which port or area supplied it, and what gear was used?

A practical way to plan seafood by month

When a precise species calendar is unavailable, plan around verifiable information rather than a generic poster. Use this monthly routine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start with the species. Write down the exact fish or shellfish, not just “white fish” or “prawns.” Different species sold under similar menu descriptions can have different ratings and seasons.
  2. Separate wild from farmed. Ask whether the item was caught at sea, raised in a pond or marine farm, or previously frozen. A farmed product should not be judged against a wild spawning calendar.
  3. Record the production area. For wild seafood, look for the catch area; for farmed seafood, look for the farming country or region. A UK shop is not proof that the seafood was caught in the UK.
  4. Check the method. Gear such as pots, creels, hand gathering, fixed nets or dredges can change environmental impacts even when the species is identical.
  5. Use the month as a final check. Compare the date with a current regional guide or the advice of a fishery. If the only information is a species name, you do not yet know whether it is a good seasonal choice.

This approach works in January or October alike: the month prompts a verification, rather than acting as a guarantee.

Fresh, frozen, local and farmed: how to interpret the label

Fresh does not mean local

A counter can sell fresh seafood transported from another country, while a local boat’s catch may have been frozen for later sale. Ask where it was caught or farmed and whether it has ever been frozen. The word “fresh” alone does not establish seasonality or sustainability.

Local does not mean sustainable

MCS advises checking species, location and method. A nearby fishery can still have a high impact, and a product from farther away can come from a well-managed fishery or farm. Generic claims such as “local,” “wild” and “sustainably sourced” are not enough on their own.

What labels should show

According to MCS, labels for unprocessed seafood must state the species and the catch or farming location. Its description of the requirement does not include farming method in that mandatory information. Ask the seller for the method when it is not printed.

Examples of seasonal and lower-pressure choices

MCS gives examples that combine species with a place and harvesting method. They are illustrations, not a ranked national list:

These examples show why “which fish is in season?” is only part of the decision. The same species can have different impacts depending on where and how it was produced.

How to make a responsible substitution

If your preferred species is in a sensitive breeding period or has a poor fishery rating, MCS suggests several swaps. Its consumer advice was stated as correct in April 2026:

If you usually buy Suggested alternative What still needs checking
Warm-water king or tiger prawns UK rope-grown mussels Confirm the mussels are from the stated UK farm and ask about the production method.
Salmon Rainbow trout farmed in UK freshwater ponds Check the farming location and any credible certification.
Haddock North Sea plaice Verify the catch area, gear and current fishery rating; this is not a claim that every plaice fishery is equivalent.

A swap is a sourcing suggestion, not a universal seasonality claim. Availability and ratings can change by fishery, so keep the same label checks after switching species.

Using sustainability ratings correctly

MCS identifies its Good Fish Guide as a free resource that rates individual fisheries and aquaculture operations. Ratings apply to a particular fishery or farming method, not automatically to every example of that species.

For certification, MCS identifies the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for wild-caught seafood and ASC, Soil Association or Organic labels for farmed seafood. The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) are separate organisations. A certification logo can be useful, but you should still check that the product’s species, area and method match the certification scope.

Why a seasonal choice can still be a narrow choice

MCS says 80% of seafood eaten in the UK is made up of just five categories: cod, haddock, salmon, tuna and prawns. It also says about 70% of seafood caught in the UK is exported to mainland Europe or farther abroad. Those figures explain why a species can be locally landed yet not be a routine item in local shops, and why diversifying your menu can reduce pressure on a small group of heavily consumed species.

Trying hake, mussels, cockles, plaice, crab or trout when they are available can support a broader market. The responsible choice still depends on the fishery or farm behind the product, not simply on choosing a less familiar name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Climate change makes old calendars less dependable

MCS warns that climate change is affecting breeding seasons. As water conditions change, spawning and fishing patterns can shift, so a calendar printed years ago may no longer describe current conditions. Prefer a dated regional guide, current fishery information or a seller who can identify the recent landing and method.

Seafish describes its Seafood Guide as a 64-page reference covering species availability and seasonality. It currently has no printed copies and says it hopes to offer a new printed version toward the end of 2026. Until then, a digital, dated source is more useful than relying on an undated wall chart.

Questions to ask at a fish counter

  • What is the exact species?
  • Was it wild-caught or farmed?
  • Where was it caught or farmed?
  • What gear or farming method was used?
  • Was it previously frozen?
  • Which fishery or farm does the sustainability rating cover?
  • If it is haddock, is it fresh during March or April, and is the fish larger than 30 cm?

If the seller cannot answer these questions, treat “in season,” “local” and “sustainable” as unverified marketing descriptions rather than established facts.
