The claim comes from recent secondary reporting attributed to The Sun and reported by Euronews, not from a publicly released Ministry of Defence technical specification. The hoses are described as a close-range, last-resort layer for small and medium first-person-view (FPV) drones that get through other security measures.
What is actually being reported
The equipment has been described by Brit Brief as a centre-fed hose reel. In the reported scenario, sailors on the deck of a submarine would direct a high-pressure water stream at an approaching drone. The aim would be to disrupt or force down a small aircraft at very short range after it has penetrated fixed security, patrols, surveillance and other counter-drone measures.

Euronews reported that the Navy’s defensive layers include “physical barriers, patrols, surveillance, monitoring, and counter-drone capabilities.” That wording is presented through newspaper reporting rather than as a published MoD engineering release, so the hose arrangement, operating procedures and performance remain unconfirmed in public documents.
Why Faslane is a uniquely sensitive site
HM Naval Base Clyde at Faslane in Scotland is the Royal Navy’s submarine base. The Ministry of Defence’s Defence Nuclear Enterprise 2026 update identifies it as the centre of specialisation for submarine deep maintenance and a critical location for submarine defuelling and dismantling.

The base supports the Royal Navy’s ballistic-missile submarine force and the UK’s Trident nuclear deterrent. Euronews’ account put the value of the four Vanguard-class submarines at £6.5 billion in 2026 reporting. That figure is attributed to the report and is not a new MoD procurement announcement.
How a water-jet last line of defence would work
- Detection: A drone must first be identified by the base’s existing surveillance and monitoring systems or by personnel.
- Layered response: Fixed security, patrols and formal counter-drone tools would be expected to deal with the threat before it reaches a submarine.
- Close-range engagement: If a small FPV drone gets through, sailors could use the reel-mounted hose from the submarine’s deck, according to the reports.
- Attempted disruption: A concentrated water stream could knock a lightweight aircraft off attitude, damage exposed components or make the pilot lose control. The reports do not state the hose pressure, flow rate, range or tested success rate.
- Escalation: A drone that remains airborne would be handled by whatever higher-level response the base and wider UK air-defence network can provide.
This is a fundamentally different job from defending the airspace around Faslane. It is a manual, line-of-sight emergency measure intended for a nearby small drone, not a substitute for detection, electronic warfare, weapons or aircraft interception.

Tip: Before turning on the pressure washer, exhaust the air in the high pressure hose as well as the inlet hose, this will ensure that the machine can spray high pressure water stream properly.
Which drones the hose is meant to address
Small and medium FPV drones
The reported target is the class of commercially derived or purpose-built FPV aircraft that can fly close to the ground or water and make a rapid approach. A hose would only be relevant once such a drone is close enough for a sailor to see and reach with a water jet. Obstacles, darkness, wind, spray and the drone’s speed could all reduce the practical opportunity to engage it.
Longer-range attack drones
The accounts distinguish these small drones from longer-range Iranian Shahed or Russian Gerbera-type aircraft. Those larger threats are described as targets for interception by RAF fighter aircraft rather than by a deck-mounted hose. The distinction matters: the reported hose is a terminal layer for a localised intrusion, not the UK’s complete response to every unmanned aircraft.

How the approach compares with other counter-drone options
| Capability | Likely role around a submarine base | Principal constraints | Public information in this report |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-pressure hose on a centre-fed reel | Emergency, very-short-range response against a nearby small drone | Requires line of sight, a trained operator and a usable water supply; effectiveness depends on unreported pressure, range and conditions | Reported equipment and role; technical specifications not stated |
| Electronic warfare | Interfere with navigation or control links before a drone reaches the target | Performance depends on the drone’s communications, frequency environment and rules of engagement | Part of the broader counter-drone category reported for the base; system details not stated |
| Guns or other kinetic interceptors | Defeat a drone at a greater distance than a hand-directed hose | Projectile danger and debris are serious concerns beside vessels, infrastructure and a nuclear facility | No Faslane-specific weapon or engagement data stated |
| Laser systems | Potentially precise engagement where power, tracking and weather permit | Needs a stable line of sight and substantial electrical and safety infrastructure; rain, mist and smoke can matter | No Faslane laser deployment stated |
| Interceptor drones | Meet or pursue an intruder away from the submarine | Requires its own detection, launch, control and recovery chain | No Faslane interceptor-drone deployment stated |
Is it really cheap and eco-friendly?
The reports imply that a hose reel could be less destructive than firing a weapon near a submarine, but no verified public figure establishes its purchase price, operating cost or savings compared with missiles, guns or lasers. There is also no published pressure, effective range, interception rate or water-consumption figure.
Calling the method “eco-friendly” therefore requires qualification. Water avoids explosive propellant and spent ammunition, yet the environmental effect would depend on the volume used, drainage, contamination and any damage caused to the drone or surrounding equipment. Those factors have not been published for the reported Faslane arrangement.

How it fits the UK’s wider technology plans
The Royal Navy is pursuing more formal uses of automation, sensors and artificial intelligence in the underwater battlespace. Parliamentary briefings have also discussed a hybrid navy and a proposed Type 94 uncrewed sensing platform for airborne threats. These programmes point toward networked detection and autonomous surveillance rather than reliance on a sailor with a hose.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat broader direction helps explain why the reported reel should be viewed as a fallback layer. It may provide a rapidly available option when a small drone is already over the deck, while sensors, electronic measures, patrols and aircraft handle threats earlier or farther away.
What remains unconfirmed
- Whether the Ministry of Defence has formally adopted the hose as a standard Faslane capability.
- The hose manufacturer, reel model, pressure, flow rate, effective range and number of trained operators.
- Any measured success rate against FPV, commercial or military drones.
- The system’s cost, water requirements, environmental impact and maintenance burden.
- How the hose would be coordinated with electronic warfare, armed response, air-defence units or RAF interception.
The defensible conclusion is narrow: secondary reports describe sailors at Faslane being prepared to use high-pressure hoses as a close-range emergency measure against small drones. Faslane’s strategic importance and the UK’s investment in layered, autonomous counter-drone capabilities are documented separately, but the hose’s specifications and effectiveness have not been publicly established.
