Atlantic bluefin tuna have returned to UK waters after many years’ absence, according to the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). WWF-UK presents the comeback as evidence that marine life can recover when pressures such as overfishing are managed—but the return is not the same as proof of a measured population recovery in UK waters.
What has returned to UK waters?
The species is eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). The MMO says it is present again in UK waters after many years’ absence. WWF-UK says historical overfishing had driven bluefin tuna away and that sightings off the UK coast are becoming more frequent. WWF’s UK seas page describes the return as a reminder that marine life can recover when it receives appropriate protection.

That is a hopeful conservation message, but it needs a careful distinction: sightings and presence show that fish are here; they do not establish how many occupy UK waters or how that number has changed over time. The sources cited here do not provide a robust estimate of the UK-water population.

WWF attributes the historical disappearance to overfishing and says improved management helped create conditions for the return. That makes fishing pressure an important part of the story, but the available evidence does not isolate one cause or quantify how much each factor contributed.

A Country Life report published on 25 May 2025 describes Thunnus UK, a collaboration involving the University of Exeter, Cefas and Stanford’s Tuna Research and Conservation Centre. The report quotes University of Exeter marine scientist Matthew Witt discussing catch controls, survival conditions for young fish, prey availability and large-scale climatic variability as possible influences. These are potential contributing factors, not a demonstrated breakdown of the causes of the return. The report also cautions against treating climate change as the single explanation.
Does the comeback mean the population has recovered?
Not necessarily. The MMO’s statement that bluefin are present in UK waters and WWF’s account of more frequent sightings support the conclusion that the fish have returned. They do not, by themselves, show a quantified population recovery here. A count of sightings, or the level of activity in a fishery, should not be treated as an estimate of total abundance.

Bluefin management also extends beyond UK waters. The MMO identifies the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) as the regional fisheries management organisation for Atlantic bluefin tuna. The UK is an ICCAT contracting member and quota-share holder, and submits annual plans. That international framework concerns management of the wider stock; it does not turn local UK sightings into a population count.
Are bluefin tuna protected in the UK?
Fishing is managed, and the return does not mean unrestricted fishing. In English waters, a permitted recreational catch-and-release fishery began in 2024. The MMO collects information from that fishery for monitoring and management, as well as UK reporting obligations to ICCAT. Its catch-and-release fishery guidance and reporting explains the scheme.

Commercial targeting is separate: the MMO says it requires specific licence authorization. Its guidance says bluefin tuna should be returned alive and unharmed wherever possible. Current seasons, quotas, vessel limits and licence conditions can change, so anyone planning to fish should check the MMO’s current UK bluefin tuna guidance rather than relying on older figures or rules. The MMO also publishes statistics on the 2024 recreational fishery; these describe fishery activity, not the total number of tuna in UK waters.

What the return tells us—and what it does not
- It tells us: eastern Atlantic bluefin tuna are present again in UK waters, and WWF links the comeback to better management after historic overfishing.
- It does not tell us: how many tuna occupy UK waters or whether their local population has reached a particular recovery level.
- It suggests: conservation and fisheries management can help create conditions for wildlife to return, while environmental conditions and prey availability may also matter.
