UGOS Pro can encrypt individual folders, yet Notebookcheck reported on October 15, 2026, that the DXP2800 GT still cannot encrypt an entire storage volume. Folder encryption can suit a carefully managed personal archive; it is a poor match for stolen-drive protection, regulated information, shared systems, or applications that create data outside the folders you selected.
What the DXP2800 GT is missing
Volume encryption encrypts the complete storage volume, including blocks created by the operating system and applications. If the NAS is powered off and its drives are removed, the data remains unreadable without the encryption key. As Daniel Schmidt wrote in Notebookcheck’s October 15, 2026 analysis, “Volume encryption protects an entire storage volume.” That protection depends on keeping the unlock key separate from the NAS and locking the volume when it is not in use.

UGOS Pro on the DXP2800 GT supports encrypted folders instead. You choose specific folders to protect, while other areas of the volume remain unencrypted. UGREEN’s product material advertises security and encryption protocols, but those broad claims do not establish that full-volume encryption is available.
Why the difference matters
Protection against theft or drive removal
The most important distinction is the threat model. Someone who steals the entire NAS, removes its SATA drives, or buys the drives second-hand can attach them to another system and examine unencrypted areas. Folder encryption reduces what that person can read, but it does not automatically cover every block on the disks.

Applications can leave sensitive remnants elsewhere
Modern NAS workloads rarely consist only of files that you manually copy into one folder. Photo indexes, thumbnails, temporary files, search databases, sync metadata, containers, virtual machines, and application databases may be stored in system locations or separate shares. Notebookcheck specifically cautions that such artifacts can be written outside encrypted folders. Encrypting the visible originals therefore may not encrypt every sensitive derivative.
Local access is a different problem
If your concern is an accidental browse by another household member, encrypted folders may be sufficient when they stay locked and permissions are configured correctly. They are less convincing when the concern is an administrator account, a compromised application, or an attacker with the physical drives in hand.

Adding SATA drives or M.2 NVMe SSDs can increase capacity or performance, but it cannot add volume encryption to UGOS Pro.

When encrypted folders can be enough
Folder-level protection is a reasonable compromise when all of these conditions describe your use:
- The NAS is primarily a personal or household archive rather than a shared business platform.
- You can place every confidential file in encrypted folders and keep those folders locked when they are not needed.
- You use few applications and have verified where each one stores originals, indexes, caches and databases.
- You accept the administrative work of deciding which folders need protection and checking new applications before trusting them with sensitive data.
- You maintain a separate encrypted backup so a locked or failed NAS does not become your only copy.
This approach trades broad, automatic coverage for lower complexity and potentially less encryption overhead. It is only as reliable as the storage discipline behind it.

When the omission is a deal-breaker
Prefer a platform that supports whole-volume encryption, or keep the data on an encrypted system elsewhere, when any of the following applies:
- A stolen NAS or removed drive must reveal no usable data.
- You handle regulated, contractual or confidential records that require comprehensive at-rest protection.
- Several people administer the NAS and you cannot guarantee that every sensitive workload stays inside selected folders.
- You run databases, synchronization services, photo catalogues, containers or virtual machines whose storage paths are difficult to audit.
- You need predictable recovery after reboot without relying on users to remember which individual folders must be unlocked.
For these cases, folder encryption creates too many unprotected paths and too much operational dependence on user behavior.

If you choose the DXP2800 GT anyway
- Define the threat. Decide whether you are protecting against casual local access, remote compromise, or offline examination after theft. The last two demand broader controls than a few encrypted shares.
- Inventory application storage. For every sync tool, media index, database, container or virtual machine, identify its data, cache, thumbnail and backup locations. Do not assume an encrypted source folder captures these files.
- Use encrypted folders deliberately. Put confidential originals and exports there, set permissions narrowly, and lock the folders whenever the data is not actively being used.
- Separate keys from the NAS. Store recovery information through a separate, protected process. Keeping an unlock key on the same device undermines protection against physical theft.
- Keep an encrypted independent backup. A second NAS or offline copy protects against loss and gives you another place to hold sensitive data under whole-device or volume encryption.
- Do not confuse RAID with security. RAID 1 can keep services running after one drive fails; it does not encrypt data, stop an attacker from reading a removed drive, or replace an independent backup.

Verdict
The DXP2800 GT’s two-bay RAID 1 layout, 10GbE networking and UGOS Pro folder controls can make sense for a home archive whose owner can enforce strict storage habits. The lack of volume encryption becomes a blocker when physical theft, drive removal, application-generated files or compliance requirements are part of the threat model. In those situations, choose a system with whole-volume encryption or place an encrypted copy on another platform; new drives, SSD cache and RAID settings cannot solve this specific gap.
