UGREEN NAS vs. Synology: Which Is Better for a First Home NAS?

Short answer: choose the UGREEN NASync DXP2800 if your priority is hardware flexibility—2.5GbE networking, two M.2 slots, and expandable memory. Choose the Synology DiskStation DS225+ if your priority is a mature DSM workflow for shared files, phone photos, backups, and surveillance. Neither is universally “better,” and neither protects your data by itself: the enclosure, disks, backup destination, network, and the tasks you actually perform determine the right first NAS.

What a first home NAS should do

A network-attached storage (NAS) box puts shared storage on your home network. Computers, phones, tablets, televisions, and other devices can reach the same files without one computer staying switched on. A well-configured NAS can centralize documents, automatically copy phone photos, hold a media library, run computer backups, and provide accounts and permissions for household members.

For a first home NAS, a two-bay enclosure is a sensible starting point. Two bays let you begin with one disk and add a second later, or install two disks immediately in a mirrored layout. The trade-off is limited expansion: once both bays are occupied, increasing capacity usually means replacing disks with larger ones. A four-bay unit offers more layout choices and easier growth, but requires more drives, more power, and more configuration.

The UGREEN NASync DXP2800 and Synology DiskStation DS225+ are current two-bay examples aimed at home or small-office use. They should be treated as comparison points, not proof that one company is always easier, faster, or safer.

UGREEN’s published DXP2800 specification includes an Intel N100 processor, 8GB of DDR5 memory expandable to 16GB, two M.2 slots, USB ports, HDMI, and one 2.5GbE port. It also lists a maximum configuration of 60TB, calculated as two 24TB drives plus two 8TB drives. That figure describes the vendor’s stated drive configuration, not the usable capacity after a storage layout and filesystem overhead. In a two-bay installation, the actual usable space depends on the disks you install and whether you select Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, or RAID 1.

Synology positions the DS225+ around DSM applications for file management, photo backup, data protection, computer backup, and surveillance. The official model sheet should be checked for the current processor, memory, network interface, supported drive types, and expansion limits before you make a specification-by-specification purchase decision. Do not infer those values from another DiskStation model.

Where the DXP2800 is the stronger fit

Hardware flexibility

The DXP2800 is attractive when you want options beyond two SATA disks. Its two M.2 slots can be relevant for supported cache or storage configurations, while expandable memory gives you room to change the system as your applications grow. Those are manufacturer-published capabilities; they do not guarantee a particular application will become faster, and you should confirm the current software support for each M.2 use before buying hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Faster local networking

A 2.5GbE port has more link capacity than a conventional 1GbE connection, which can help when several clients transfer large files at the same time. It only helps if the rest of the path also supports the speed: the network switch or router, cabling, client adapter, and the disks inside the NAS all matter. A laptop connected over Wi-Fi may remain the bottleneck even when the NAS has a 2.5GbE port. The port rating is not a measured transfer-rate guarantee.

Local video output and ports

UGREEN lists HDMI and USB connectivity on the DXP2800. Those ports may be useful in a particular home setup, but check which applications can use them and what display or peripheral functions UGOS Pro supports. Do not assume that an HDMI connector turns the NAS into a full desktop media player.

Where the DS225+ is the stronger fit

DSM-centered workflows

Synology’s advantage in this comparison is the DSM ecosystem and the way its documentation groups everyday tasks. A beginner can evaluate the exact functions needed—shared folders, user permissions, phone-photo backup, PC or Mac backup, remote access, file synchronization, and surveillance—rather than selecting hardware from a port list alone. DSM’s technical documentation describes the available applications and their requirements; check the current versions before deployment because software capabilities and package support can change.

Guided backup and recovery tasks

The DS225+ is presented as a data-protection and backup device, not merely a disk shelf. That positioning matters if your first NAS will be used mainly for family photos, documents, and routine computer backups. A polished workflow can reduce setup mistakes, but there is no evidence here proving that DSM is objectively easier than UGOS Pro for every user. Ease depends on your devices, the accounts you need, and how much remote access or automation you configure.

Surveillance and household services

Synology includes surveillance among the DS225+ use cases. If camera recording is a requirement, verify camera licensing, supported models, retention needs, and the storage consumed by continuous recording before purchase. A two-bay NAS that is adequate for documents may need a different disk plan when it also stores several cameras’ footage.

Capacity, RAID, and the backup distinction

Choose a layout deliberately

  • Basic: treats a disk as an individual storage space. It can maximize usable space from a single drive, but a failed drive affects the data stored on that drive.
  • JBOD: combines disks into one logical pool without mirroring. It can simplify access to multiple disks, but it does not provide redundancy.
  • RAID 0: stripes data for potential performance and full combined capacity, but a single disk failure can make the entire array unavailable.
  • RAID 1: mirrors data across two disks. A compatible system can remain available after one disk fails, but usable capacity is approximately the size of the smaller disk and a second failure before replacement can still cause loss.

Usable capacity is always lower than the sum printed on the drive labels. Different-sized disks, RAID metadata, filesystem overhead, snapshots, and reserved space all affect what applications can use. UGREEN’s stated 60TB maximum for the DXP2800 is therefore not a promise of 60TB of usable RAID storage.

RAID is availability, not a backup

A mirrored array can keep a NAS running after certain single-drive failures, which is useful availability. It is not an independent copy. Synology’s backup guidance warns that a local copy does not protect against fire, natural disaster, or theft affecting all equipment. Its Knowledge Center also notes that RAID crashes and drive failures can still lead to data loss even when a multi-version local copy exists.

UGREEN NAS DH2300 2-Bay for Beginners & Personal Users, Phone Backup | AI Album, Private Cloud/Remote Access, File Sharing, Multi-Device Backup, Home Entertainment, 4GB RAM on Board (Diskless)
  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Keep a separate backup destination for irreplaceable photos and documents. That destination can be another device or an off-site service, but it must be independent enough that one incident cannot destroy both copies. Enable versioning where available, and perform a test restore: select a real file, recover it to a different location, and open it. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a verified recovery plan.

Total cost: price the system, not just the enclosure

Both examples are enclosures that may be sold without disks. Your first-NAS budget should include:

  • the NAS enclosure;
  • two compatible SATA drives if you want a mirrored array immediately;
  • an additional backup destination for important data;
  • network equipment capable of the desired link speed;
  • electricity and, if needed, a small uninterruptible power supply;
  • replacement-drive budget and any surveillance or cloud-service fees.

Drive prices, bundles, warranties, and software revisions change. Confirm the live listing, included accessories, and return policy at checkout. UGREEN says its systems support third-party drives and provides a compatibility list; check the current list for the exact drive model rather than assuming any SATA disk is approved. Also verify whether a retailer’s “NAS” bundle actually includes drives.

Do not select a capacity before estimating your data. Add the current size of your photo library, documents, computer backups, and media; estimate annual growth; then reserve space for versions, snapshots, and replacement time. If the result barely fits a two-bay mirror, a four-bay system may be less expensive over several years because it permits incremental expansion.

How to set up a first two-bay NAS

  1. List the workloads. Write down whether you need shared folders, phone-photo backup, PC or Mac backup, media management, remote access, or surveillance. This list determines software and capacity requirements.
  2. Select compatible drives. Check the vendor’s current compatibility page for the exact capacity and model. Buy two matching-capacity drives if you intend to use RAID 1; the smaller drive sets the usable mirror size.
  3. Install and label the disks. Power off the enclosure, fit the drives according to the manufacturer’s bay order, and record each serial number. Keep purchase receipts for warranty claims.
  4. Connect the network. Attach the NAS to your router or switch with Ethernet. For the DXP2800’s 2.5GbE capability, every intervening device and the client adapter must support the faster link; otherwise the connection negotiates at a lower speed.
  5. Run the vendor’s initial setup. Update the operating system, set a unique administrator password, and create separate user accounts. Avoid sharing one administrator login with the household.
  6. Create storage. Choose Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, or RAID 1 according to your risk tolerance. Read the warning that initialization erases disks, and confirm the selected disks before proceeding.
  7. Create shared folders and permissions. Separate private documents from family media. Grant each account only the access it needs, and disable guest access unless you have a specific reason to keep it.
  8. Configure client backups. Install the supported desktop and mobile tools, choose the folders to protect, and set a schedule. For phone photos, confirm that uploads complete over both Wi-Fi and cellular connections according to your preference.
  9. Add an independent backup. Configure a second destination and enable versioned backups if supported. Keep at least one copy away from the NAS; test recovery before deleting originals.
  10. Harden remote access. Use the vendor’s documented secure access method, enable multifactor authentication where available, keep firmware current, and do not expose management ports directly to the internet without understanding the security consequences.
  11. Document recovery. Record the administrator recovery method, backup location, encryption keys, and the procedure for replacing a failed disk. Store the instructions somewhere accessible when the NAS is unavailable.

Networking and real-world performance

Link speed is not the same as file-transfer speed. A large copy can be limited by the source computer’s disk, Wi-Fi interference, SMB settings, simultaneous users, encryption, small-file overhead, or the NAS’s chosen storage layout. A 2.5GbE port can be valuable for a wired workstation and a suitable switch, while it may provide no visible improvement to a phone on a congested wireless network.

No controlled, head-to-head benchmark establishes that the DXP2800 is faster or that the DS225+ is slower for identical workloads. Treat the published interfaces and processor details as specifications, not measured results. If speed is decisive, compare independent tests that use the same disks, network, software versions, file sizes, and client hardware.

When a four-bay model makes more sense

UGREEN’s DXP4800 Plus illustrates the next step up: four SATA bays, an Intel Pentium Gold 8505, 8GB of DDR5 memory expandable to 64GB, two M.2 slots, and one 10GbE plus one 2.5GbE port. Its listed layouts include JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10. These are hardware specifications, not measured transfer rates.

Four bays can make sense when you need larger protected capacity, want to replace disks one at a time, or expect several services and clients. RAID 5, 6, and 10 also introduce different failure and capacity trade-offs that require planning. For a first NAS used only for documents and a modest photo library, the extra drives and faster network may add cost without solving a real problem.

Common first-NAS mistakes and fixes

Buying the enclosure but forgetting disks

Symptom: the box arrives but cannot store data. Fix: confirm whether the listing is diskless, purchase compatible drives separately, and budget for a second backup destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming RAID protects against every disaster

Symptom: a mirrored NAS is treated as the only copy. Fix: maintain an independent, preferably off-site copy and test a restore. RAID helps with selected disk-failure scenarios; it does not protect against theft, fire, ransomware, accidental deletion, or a failed controller.

Expecting 2.5GbE or 10GbE to guarantee speed

Symptom: transfers remain near 1GbE or below despite a faster NAS port. Fix: check the negotiated link on the NAS, switch, and client; use suitable cabling; test with a wired client; and consider disk and workload limits.

Using mismatched or unsupported drives

Symptom: warnings, degraded arrays, or uncertain support. Fix: consult the current compatibility list for the exact model and firmware, and keep a replacement drive plan.

Giving every user administrator rights

Symptom: accidental deletion or configuration changes affect the whole system. Fix: create individual accounts, use least-privilege permissions, protect the administrator account with multifactor authentication, and keep a separate recovery record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never practicing recovery

Symptom: a backup job reports success but a needed file cannot be found. Fix: schedule a periodic restore test and verify that permissions, filenames, and older versions are recoverable.

A practical decision framework

Choose the DXP2800 when

  • you specifically want two M.2 slots or memory that can expand from 8GB to 16GB;
  • a 2.5GbE port fits your wired network upgrade plan;
  • you are comfortable evaluating UGOS Pro and configuring your own backup workflow;
  • you have confirmed drive compatibility and accept a diskless purchase.

Choose the DS225+ when

  • your priority is DSM’s documented file, photo, backup, data-protection, and surveillance workflows;
  • you want to select a model around those software tasks rather than around expansion hardware;
  • you have checked the current DS225+ sheet for the exact CPU, memory, network, drive, and package limits that matter to you.

Choose neither yet when

  • you have not identified what data needs protection or how quickly it will grow;
  • you cannot fund a separate backup destination;
  • you require more than two disks for capacity or redundancy but are comparing only two-bay systems;
  • you expect a NAS to replace a tested off-site backup plan.

The best first home NAS is the one whose storage layout, software tasks, network, and recovery plan you can operate confidently. Compare the DXP2800 and DS225+ on those concrete requirements, then recheck current hardware sheets, drive compatibility, availability, and total installed cost before ordering.
