UGREEN DXP8800 Ultra vs. DIY NAS: Cost, Performance, and Ease of Use

The UGREEN DXP8800 Ultra is a ready-to-use eight-bay NAS platform listed at $1,779.99 in the United States, before you add drives. A DIY NAS may cost less, but the cited examples do not establish the price of a current build with the Ultra’s bay count and connectivity. The practical choice is between an integrated appliance and the flexibility—and planning work—of selecting your own components.

At a glance: appliance versus build-your-own

Consideration UGREEN DXP8800 Ultra DIY NAS
What you buy Eight-bay diskless NAS with vendor-managed UGOS Pro Separately selected case, motherboard and CPU, memory, power supply, boot storage, and storage connectivity; software is your choice
Starting price evidence $1,779.99 for the diskless unit on UGREEN’s US product page, accessed October 13, 2026 No current, matched eight-bay parts list was validated; total depends on components and any networking or controller additions
Core specifications Intel Core 7 150U, 8GB DDR5, eight SATA bays, two user M.2 NVMe slots, dual 10GbE, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports Determined by the components you choose; matching the Ultra’s features requires pricing them into the build
Setup trade-off Integrated appliance and bundled operating system; setup time and app quality were not independently measured Greater hardware and OS choice, with component selection and software configuration left to the builder

These are not yet like-for-like systems. The Ultra’s price excludes storage drives, while a DIY comparison must account for a complete eight-bay system and comparable networking. Neither option can be declared the cheaper one without a current, matched bill of materials.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters because “NAS price” can refer to very different things: an empty enclosure, a complete platform without drives, or a populated system ready to hold data. For this comparison, begin with the cost of the platform, then add equivalent storage to both options. If you want 10GbE or SSD storage, include those items on the DIY side too rather than treating them as free extras.

What the DXP8800 Ultra includes—and what it does not

UGREEN’s product page describes an eight-bay NAS based on an Intel Core 7 150U processor with 10 cores and 12 threads. The listed configuration includes 8GB of DDR5 memory, expandable to 96GB; eight SATA bays; two M.2 NVMe slots for user-installed SSDs; dual 10GbE; and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. It also bundles the company’s UGOS Pro operating system. UGREEN’s DXP8800 Ultra product page

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The listed $1,779.99 is for the diskless unit, not an eight-drive storage system. You must add the cost of the hard drives you intend to use, and any optional SSDs. The actual system total therefore depends on drive capacity, model, and configuration.

UGREEN names third-party drive brands, but that does not mean every drive model is automatically the right choice for every buyer. Check the compatibility information for the exact model and drive before purchasing. The same principle applies to any M.2 NVMe SSD: it is an optional purchase, and whether it makes sense depends on the storage or cache workflow you intend to use.

Interpreting the 272TB claim

UGREEN advertises up to 272TB using eight 32TB drives and two 8TB SSDs. That is a vendor-stated maximum configuration, not a promise of 272TB of usable storage. Drive arrangement, RAID choice, and filesystem overhead affect the capacity available for files; SSDs used for cache or another purpose may not contribute to the same pool as the hard drives. Decide on the protection and storage layout you need before treating a capacity figure as usable space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical planning, distinguish the total capacity of the installed drives from the space that remains available after you choose redundancy, a filesystem, and any other storage layout. A large raw-capacity headline is useful for understanding the platform’s stated ceiling, but it does not tell you how much room your files will have after configuration. Decide on a drive count and protection approach first, then compare the resulting usable capacity and purchase cost with your needs.

Ultra versus DXP8800 Plus

The DXP8800 Ultra and DXP8800 Plus share the broad eight-bay layout and connectivity, according to TechRadar’s October 10, 2026 review. The Ultra’s distinguishing headroom is its newer Core 7 150U processor and a memory expansion ceiling of 96GB, compared with 64GB for the Plus. Those differences matter most if your applications benefit from the extra compute or memory; they do not by themselves establish a noticeable improvement for every file-serving or backup workload. TechRadar’s DXP8800 Ultra review

The larger memory ceiling is a maximum supported configuration, not the memory included in the base system: UGREEN lists 8GB of DDR5 in the Ultra. If you are comparing models, separate included memory from upgrade capacity, and ask whether your actual apps need more than the base configuration. An owner who uses a NAS mainly for file storage and backups may weigh the choice differently from someone planning to run virtual machines or containers. The cited sources do not establish that either workload necessarily needs a particular memory amount.

Cost: compare complete systems, not sticker prices

UGREEN’s US product page listed the diskless Ultra at $1,779.99 when accessed October 13, 2026. That is a dated product-page snapshot, not a guaranteed price or durable MSRP. The same page listed the DXP8800 Plus at $1,369.99 at that time. TechRadar’s October 10, 2026 market snapshot instead reported $1,779.99 for the Ultra and $1,207.99 for the Plus. The different Plus prices illustrate why a comparison should use current listings for the buyer’s region rather than assume a fixed premium. UGREEN product page · TechRadar review

NAS Compares described an approximately $270 price gap in an October 5, 2026 article, based on its own video and market snapshot, and advised checking live pricing. That figure does not match the other dated snapshots, so it should not be treated as a universal or current Ultra premium. NAS Compares’ DXP8800 comparison

The point of those snapshots is not to select one as the permanent correct figure. They illustrate that retail prices change by date, seller, promotion, and region. If you are weighing the Ultra against the Plus, compare live prices at the moment you are ready to buy, then decide whether the newer processor and higher memory ceiling are worth the difference for your workload. Do not treat an older comparison’s price gap as a stable product attribute.

Build a fair DIY budget

A DIY quote should cover the whole platform before you compare it with the diskless Ultra. Price components separately so you can see what drives the total, then compare equivalent storage and network capability.

  • Enclosure: an eight-bay case with suitable drive mounting and cooling.
  • Compute platform: motherboard and CPU, plus memory sized for your operating system and applications.
  • Drive connectivity: enough motherboard SATA ports or a host bus adapter (HBA) to support the intended drive count.
  • Networking: include a 10GbE network card if the chosen board does not provide the required connection; account for compatible network equipment if your setup needs it.
  • Power and cooling: power supply and any additional fans required by the case and components.
  • Boot and storage: boot device, hard drives, and any optional SSDs. Keep the drive allowance consistent when comparing systems.
  • Software: account for any applicable software cost, as well as the time and effort to install and configure the system.

A 2026 DIY guide identifies the case, board and CPU, memory, power supply, and HBA as major planning categories, but its published figures do not establish a current parts list that matches the Ultra’s eight bays and full feature set. DIY build guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One community example from the TrueNAS forums describes an approximately $600 DIY build with five bays and 10GbE in 2025. It is useful as context for what one smaller build was reported to cost, not as a price for an eight-bay Ultra competitor. TrueNAS Community Forums build discussion

That five-bay example does not answer the question “Is a DIY NAS cheaper than the DXP8800 Ultra?” by itself. It differs in bay count, date, and potentially in the rest of the specification. For a meaningful comparison, create a parts list that meets your requirements, check current prices for those exact parts, and note which components you already own. If you choose used parts, record that too; a low-cost build assembled from existing or secondhand hardware is not necessarily comparable to a new appliance purchase.

Also decide which features are truly required rather than matching every specification by default. If you do not need 10GbE or Thunderbolt 4, a DIY system that omits them may suit you, but its lower total would reflect a different capability set. If your goal is to reproduce the Ultra’s connectivity, include the required network card or other hardware and any network equipment needed to use it. Keep storage drives out of both platform totals until you are ready to add an equivalent drive allowance to each.

Performance: match the workload and the test

The Ultra’s dual 10GbE ports and UGREEN-advertised aggregate bandwidth of up to 20Gbps describe network link capacity, not a guaranteed transfer rate for one client. A single transfer can be constrained by the client’s network interface, the network path, the drives, the protocol, and the workload. Multiple ports also do not automatically make one connection run at the combined link rate.

To make a useful network comparison, consider the complete path between the NAS and the client: both devices’ network interfaces, intervening network equipment, and the storage and protocol being used. The Ultra’s two 10GbE ports are a platform feature, while the advertised aggregate figure is not a promise that an individual computer will receive a 20Gbps file transfer. A DIY build’s actual result likewise depends on the selected NIC, storage controller, drives, and configuration.

UGREEN lists an Intel Core 7 150U with 10 cores and 12 threads and 8GB DDR5, expandable to 96GB. That hardware gives the appliance headroom for uses beyond basic file storage, but the cited sources do not provide controlled benchmarks against a DIY system configured to comparable capability. A DIY NAS can use a different processor, memory amount, storage controller, network adapter, cooling arrangement, and operating system, so the name “DIY” alone says nothing conclusive about speed.

When evaluating performance claims, match the task and the testing conditions. File transfers, running containers, virtual machines, and backups place different demands on a system. A result measured with different drives, network equipment, protocols, or client hardware cannot establish that one platform is categorically faster. No controlled head-to-head benchmark is available for this comparison, so neither a blanket speed advantage nor a numerical performance uplift is supported.

Power figures are manufacturer claims

TechRadar reported UGREEN figures of 70.39W with drives active and 28.99W in hibernation for both the Ultra and Plus. These are manufacturer-stated figures, not independent measurements. Your actual power use will depend on drives, workload, settings, and other installed components; do not treat these figures as a guaranteed household energy bill or a direct comparison with a DIY build. TechRadar’s review and reported power figures

Those figures can be a reference point when thinking about the appliance, but they do not provide a measured comparison with a DIY system. A DIY configuration has its own processor, board, drives, fans, and power supply, so its consumption depends on the parts and use pattern. If electricity cost is important to your decision, look for measurements made on the actual configuration and workload you are considering rather than trying to infer a DIY result from UGREEN’s figures.

Ease of use, software, and operating-system choice

The appliance route bundles the bays, ports, and UGOS Pro, so the hardware platform and vendor operating system arrive together. UGREEN advertises Docker, virtual machines, business applications, and centralized management features. Those are product claims; no independent assessment establishes setup time, application quality, or how well each feature fits a particular workflow. Check whether the applications you need are supported before relying on the NAS as a platform for them. UGREEN DXP8800 Ultra product page

With DIY, you select the hardware and operating system. That control can be useful if you have particular storage or software requirements, but it also means you make decisions about case, board and CPU, memory, drive connectivity, power, cooling, and OS setup. The effort is not the same for every builder, and no reliable setup-time figure is established here.

There is a real trade-off behind the phrase “ease of use.” An integrated product gives you a defined hardware and software combination to evaluate, while a build-your-own system gives you more freedom to pick components and software. The cited sources provide no measured setup-time comparison or independent app-quality test, so the practical question is whether you prefer the bundled path or want to make and maintain more of those choices yourself.

Verify third-party OS support before buying

A current secondary report says the new Ultra models can boot TrueNAS and Unraid, but community support for the fan and front-panel LED features had not caught up with older DXP models at the time of reporting. This is not a manufacturer compatibility guarantee. If TrueNAS, Unraid, or another third-party OS is a purchase requirement, verify support for the exact Ultra model, particularly driver behavior, fan control, and status indicators. NAS Compares’ report on the Ultra and Plus

Booting an operating system is not the same as having every hardware feature work as expected. Buyers who plan to replace UGOS Pro should check specifically whether the exact model’s fans can be controlled and whether the front-panel status indicators are supported. Because the report is secondary and describes support at a point in time, verify current community information before purchase rather than assuming that support has either remained unchanged or been resolved.

Which option fits your situation?

Choose the Ultra if you want an integrated eight-bay appliance

The Ultra is the more direct fit if you want eight bays, dual 10GbE, Thunderbolt 4, and a vendor-managed NAS operating system in one platform. Compare its current diskless price with the cost of a complete DIY parts list, then add the same planned hard-drive capacity to both totals. Also confirm that UGOS Pro includes the applications and management features you need.

Consider DIY if control or component choice is the priority

A DIY system is the natural route if you want to choose the case, processor, memory, controller, network hardware, and software yourself. Whether it saves money depends on the parts you select and whether the comparison includes equivalent bays, networking, boot storage, cooling, and drives. The available five-bay community example is not enough to claim that an eight-bay build will cost less.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plus owners should identify a real limitation first

If you already own a DXP8800 Plus and mainly use it for light file serving or backups, compare the actual price difference and ask whether the processor or 64GB memory ceiling limits your workload. The Ultra’s 96GB ceiling and newer processor may be valuable for some uses, but the cited evidence does not establish that every Plus owner will benefit from upgrading.

The Plus comparison is also a reminder that a bigger specification is not automatically a better purchase for every owner. The Ultra has a higher stated memory ceiling and a newer processor, but the two models share the broad eight-bay layout and ports. If the current Plus already handles your jobs, the relevant question is whether a specific limitation is costing you time or preventing an application from running—not simply whether the Ultra has a newer component.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Set the storage target. Choose the number and capacity of drives, and account for the difference between raw capacity and usable space under your intended protection scheme.
  2. Price the Ultra as configured. Start with the live diskless price in your region and add the drives and optional SSDs you intend to install.
  3. Write a complete DIY parts list. Include an eight-bay case, board and CPU, memory, power supply, boot device, cooling, and sufficient SATA connectivity or an HBA.
  4. Match the connectivity. Add 10GbE hardware and any required network equipment to the DIY budget if your plan depends on it; count only features you actually need.
  5. Choose software and workload. Check application and OS requirements, and assess whether your file-serving, virtualization, container, or backup workload benefits from the selected CPU and memory.
  6. Compare dated totals. Use live local prices for both complete systems, keeping drives and optional upgrades consistent. Do not rely on a price gap reported from another date or market.

Before ordering, double-check the exact product price, stock, and included hardware on the seller’s current listing. Then check drive compatibility and decide whether you need the optional M.2 slots populated at the outset. On the DIY side, confirm that the chosen case, board, and controller support the number of drives you intend to install, and that the network hardware matches your actual setup. These checks turn a broad “appliance versus DIY” preference into a more useful comparison of complete systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the UGREEN DXP8800 Ultra cheaper than building a DIY NAS?

No current, matched eight-bay DIY bill of materials is available to establish whether either option is cheaper. UGREEN listed the Ultra at $1,779.99 for the diskless unit on its US product page, accessed October 13, 2026. Compare that live regional price with a complete DIY parts list, then add equivalent drives and networking to both totals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the DXP8800 Ultra include hard drives?

No. UGREEN lists the DXP8800 Ultra as diskless. Add the NAS hard drives you plan to use, plus any optional M.2 NVMe SSDs, when estimating the purchase cost.

Is 272TB the usable capacity of the DXP8800 Ultra?

No. UGREEN’s advertised maximum describes a configuration with eight 32TB drives and two 8TB SSDs. It is not a guarantee of usable file space. Drive arrangement, RAID choice, filesystem overhead, and how the SSDs are used affect the capacity available for data.

Can one client get 20Gbps from the Ultra’s dual 10GbE ports?

UGREEN’s up-to-20Gbps figure is an aggregate link-capacity claim, not a guaranteed rate for one client or one transfer. Actual throughput depends on the client interface, network equipment and path, drives, protocol, and workload; two ports do not automatically combine into a single 20Gbps connection.

Can the DXP8800 Ultra run TrueNAS or Unraid?

A secondary report says the new Ultra models can boot TrueNAS and Unraid, but it also notes that community support for fan control and front-panel LEDs had not caught up with older DXP models at the time. This is not a manufacturer compatibility guarantee. Verify current support for the exact model and the hardware features you need before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should a DXP8800 Plus owner upgrade to the Ultra?

It depends on workload and current pricing. The Ultra uses a newer Core 7 150U and supports up to 96GB of memory, compared with a 64GB ceiling for the Plus, while both share the broad eight-bay layout and connectivity. If your Plus handles your file-serving or backup work, identify a real processor or memory limit before paying to upgrade.

The Bottom Line

The DXP8800 Ultra is an eight-bay diskless appliance with dual 10GbE, Thunderbolt 4, and UGOS Pro; UGREEN’s US listing was $1,779.99 when checked on October 13, 2026. A DIY NAS offers more control over hardware and software, but no current matched eight-bay build price is published. Compare current, complete system totals—including drives, connectivity, and any controller or cooling needs—and choose based on whether you value the integrated platform or the flexibility of building it yourself.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
