UGREEN DXP8800 Ultra Review: Is It Enough of an Upgrade?

By Freedom251 Team · · 5 min read

The UGREEN DXP8800 Ultra is a meaningful upgrade over the DXP8800 Plus if you need more processing and memory headroom for containers, virtual machines, indexing, or several users. It is a much less compelling replacement for a working Plus—or a premium choice for a NAS used mainly for file sharing and backups. The Ultra keeps the same basic eight-bay platform; the case for paying more rests chiefly on its newer processor and higher reported memory ceiling, not on additional drive bays.

What the DXP8800 Ultra adds—and what it does not

Both models are described by NAS Compares and WunderTech as eight-bay systems with two M.2 slots and broadly similar high-speed connectivity. The Ultra’s main differences are its Intel Core 7 150U processor and a reported maximum of 96GB of memory; the Plus is reported to use an Intel Core i5-1235U and support up to 64GB. Those Plus-specific figures come from comparison sources, rather than a retrieved full Plus product page.

Feature DXP8800 Ultra DXP8800 Plus
Processor Intel Core 7 150U (UGREEN product page) Intel Core i5-1235U (reported by NAS Compares and WunderTech)
Maximum memory 96GB (reported by NAS Compares and WunderTech) 64GB (reported by NAS Compares and WunderTech)
Memory supplied 8GB DDR5-4800 (UGREEN product page) Not stated in the cited comparison sources
Drive bays 8 SATA bays and 2 M.2 NVMe slots 8 SATA bays and 2 M.2 slots (described as shared platform features by NAS Compares and WunderTech)
Maximum capacity 272TB, as stated by UGREEN; this is a manufacturer-stated maximum Not stated in the cited comparison sources

The practical distinction is headroom, not a bigger storage chassis. If you need more capacity, remember that neither the Ultra’s processor nor its memory ceiling adds another SATA bay. If your plan is to fill the eight bays and run ordinary file and backup services, the Plus may deliver the platform you need for less.

What performance evidence says—and cannot prove

There is no controlled, same-configuration Ultra-versus-Plus benchmark in the cited material, so a percentage performance advantage would be misleading. NAS Compares describes the Ultra as having a higher performance ceiling for workloads such as Docker containers, databases, multiple users, indexing, encryption, surveillance, thumbnail generation, remote-access services, and light virtualization. Its article did not provide a PassMark score.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

WunderTech reports testing an Ultra supplied by UGREEN. The reviewer used eight drives without SSD cache, edited directly from the NAS, and found a large-file copy over 10GbE practically even with a 12-bay DIY system in that reviewer’s test. That is a useful example of a 10GbE workflow, not a controlled comparison with the Plus or a guarantee of results with different drives, networks, clients, file sizes, or software.

Transfer speed depends on the whole path: the drive array, network equipment, client, and application all matter. The Ultra’s connectivity is useful only if the rest of your setup can take advantage of it.

Is the Ultra worth its price premium?

UGREEN’s US product page displayed the diskless Ultra at $1,779.99 when accessed in October 2026. UGREEN’s homepage displayed $1,779.99 for the Ultra and $1,207.99 for the Plus on October 9, 2026, while NAS Compares framed its question around a $270 difference in its own price snapshot. These figures are not a consistent live quote: storefront prices can change with promotions and region. Check both models’ current prices where you intend to buy rather than treating either gap as fixed.

Compare the total cost of a usable system, not just the enclosure. The Ultra is diskless, so budget for the drives you need, backup capacity, and any networking equipment required to use 10GbE. UGREEN says it generally supports third-party drives, naming Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba as examples, but directs buyers to its compatibility list. Check that list for the exact drive model before purchasing; brand-level examples do not establish compatibility for every drive.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • The premium has a clearer case if the Ultra’s extra compute headroom or reported 96GB memory ceiling matches applications you expect to run.
  • The premium is harder to justify if the NAS will mainly store and serve files, hold backups, or perform other workloads that do not approach the Plus’s reported 64GB ceiling.
  • Consider where the difference goes: if you do not need the Ultra’s headroom, spending more on drives or backup capacity may better serve a storage-focused setup.

Which buyers should choose which model?

Choose the Ultra for planned compute-heavy use

The Ultra is the more sensible starting point for a new system if you expect to run several containers, light virtual machines, indexing, or applications alongside storage services. It is also the stronger fit when several people will use the NAS at once or when your planned memory footprint may exceed the Plus’s reported ceiling. Buy for the workload you can identify, not simply because the maximum memory number is larger; most buyers do not need to install the maximum.

Consider the Plus for storage-first use

If the main jobs are file sharing, backups, and storing media, and the Plus is meaningfully cheaper at checkout, its shared eight-bay layout and M.2 slots may be a better-value choice. The Ultra’s processor advantage matters less when your workload does not make use of it.

Keep a working Plus unless you have a specific constraint

NAS Compares says existing Plus owners do not automatically need to upgrade. A move to the Ultra makes more sense when you can point to a real CPU or memory limitation in your current workload. Replacing a functioning NAS without such a constraint buys headroom that may go unused.

Check the entire media-workflow chain

UGREEN lists two 10GbE ports, Thunderbolt 4, an SD card reader, HDMI, and PCIe expansion among the Ultra’s connections and expansion options. They make it a well-connected system on paper, but they do not by themselves guarantee faster editing or transfers. Confirm that your client, network, drives, and chosen application can use the connection you intend to rely on.

Software is part of the upgrade decision

Vortez’s September 4, 2026 review praises the hardware and connectivity but assesses UGREEN’s application catalogue as smaller than the more mature ecosystems from Synology and QNAP. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a verified count of available applications. Before choosing the Ultra for a particular service, check whether UGREEN’s current UGOS Pro software supports the applications and workflows you need.

Verdict

The DXP8800 Ultra is enough of an upgrade when you are buying new and expect to use its CPU and memory headroom. It is not a new storage class: the reported gains do not add drive bays, and the available reviews do not establish a measured percentage improvement over the Plus. For a working Plus owner or a storage-first buyer, upgrade only if the current price difference and a concrete workload requirement make the extra headroom worthwhile.
