Current science has not established that UFOs—or, in NASA’s terminology, unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP)—are extraterrestrial. NASA says it has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are alien technology. That is a statement about the evidence available today, not proof that life elsewhere is impossible.
Some sightings remain unresolved because investigators lack clear, calibrated sensor data, complete metadata, or independent measurements. “Unidentified” means that an observation has not yet been attributed to an aircraft, a known natural phenomenon, or another ordinary cause; it does not identify the cause as alien. Religious traditions can discuss what discovering life elsewhere would mean for creation, humanity, or theology, but those discussions do not determine what a particular object was.

Are UFOs aliens?
There are three separate propositions that are often collapsed into one:
- Life might exist somewhere beyond Earth.
- A particular observation might remain unexplained with the evidence currently available.
- A particular object might be extraterrestrial technology.
Evidence for one proposition would not automatically establish either of the others. An unresolved video does not demonstrate life elsewhere, and evidence that life exists on another world would not show that a specific light in the sky came from there.

NASA defines UAP as observations in the sky that cannot currently be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena. The definition describes the state of an investigation, not a mechanism or origin. A report can move from “unidentified” to an ordinary attribution when better data arrive.
NASA’s UAP Independent Study Team reported in 2023 that “to date, in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, there is no conclusive evidence suggesting an extraterrestrial origin for UAP.” NASA’s current UAP FAQ likewise says the agency has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life and no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial. These statements do not claim that aliens are impossible; they report that credible evidence has not been found.
What does science say about UFOs?
Science evaluates evidence, not the most dramatic interpretation
A scientific explanation must connect an observation to measurements that other investigators can inspect, test, and, ideally, reproduce. Many UAP reports instead consist of a single eyewitness account, a short video with unknown camera settings, or a sensor track without enough information to reconstruct the object’s distance, speed, or shape.
NASA’s study focused on methods, data quality, and how future observations could be collected. It was not a declaration that extraterrestrial visitors cannot exist, and it was not a re-investigation of every historical sighting. The agency’s FAQ says the independent team had 16 members and worked for nine months; those figures describe the study process, not the probability that any object is alien.

Why an unresolved case is not evidence of aliens
An observation can remain unresolved for mundane reasons: the object may be too small or distant, the camera may be moving, infrared effects may distort its apparent motion, or key metadata may be missing. If investigators cannot establish range, perspective, atmospheric conditions, or sensor calibration, they may be unable to distinguish a bird, balloon, aircraft, drone, planet, or imaging artifact from something genuinely unusual.
Eyewitness testimony can identify that someone saw something, but it normally cannot establish an object’s provenance. Human perception compresses distance, duration, and motion, especially at night or under stress. A witness account is useful for locating an event and finding additional records; it is rarely sufficient by itself to identify a craft or its origin.
What NASA’s conclusion does and does not mean
- It does mean: no conclusive peer-reviewed evidence currently establishes that UAP are extraterrestrial, and NASA has found no credible evidence of extraterrestrial life.
- It does not mean: science has proved that life beyond Earth cannot exist, that every sighting has been explained, or that every witness is mistaken.
- It requires: treating the strength of a conclusion as proportional to the quality, quantity, and independence of the data.
How investigators distinguish an unexplained report from an attributed case
The most useful comparison is not “ordinary versus alien,” but “insufficiently documented versus sufficiently documented.” The following questions show why case-level attribution matters.

The Al Taqaddum example
The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office’s public case-resolution index describes the Al Taqaddum case as an infrared recording. AARO assessed it with high confidence as consistent with a cluster of fully and partially inflated balloons. The office reported that the objects did not exhibit anomalous behavior or capabilities.

This is an agency assessment of one case. It demonstrates that a report initially treated as unusual can receive an ordinary attribution when analysts examine its recorded characteristics. It does not justify assuming that every UAP report is a balloon, just as one unresolved report cannot justify assuming that every report is extraterrestrial.
What can science actually prove?
Claims science can support
- Whether a recording is consistent with a known aircraft, balloon, natural event, or sensor artifact.
- Whether an apparent maneuver follows from parallax, camera movement, wind, or changes in viewing angle.
- Whether independent sensors agree on an object’s position, speed, size, and duration.
- Whether a proposed explanation makes predictions that can be tested with new observations.
Claims that require evidence not currently established
- That an unidentified object came from outside Earth.
- That a nonhuman intelligence built or operated it.
- That a government, military, or private organization possesses confirmed alien vehicles.
- That an individual religious interpretation proves an object’s physical origin.
Science can also establish that a claim is not supported by the available record. That negative conclusion is narrower than proving universal nonexistence. “No credible evidence has been found” is different from “the phenomenon is impossible.”
What stronger evidence would look like
A persuasive extraterrestrial-origin claim would need more than an unexplained appearance. Investigators would look for raw, calibrated data from independent sensors; reliable timestamps and locations; recoverable physical material with a demonstrably non-terrestrial composition; and analyses that independent laboratories can reproduce. The chain of custody would matter for any material sample, while sensor data would need enough context to rule out perspective, instrument, atmospheric, and human-made explanations.
Until such evidence is available and independently checked, the scientifically responsible description is “unidentified from the available evidence,” not “alien.”

Does believing in aliens conflict with religion?
There is no single cross-faith answer established by the sources available here. Religious traditions differ internally, and the question “Could life exist elsewhere?” is not the same as “Was this sighting an alien craft?” A theological discussion can explore meaning and implications without making an empirical identification.
A Catholic faith-and-science perspective
Educational materials associated with the Vatican Observatory treat extraterrestrial intelligence as an open question. They discuss how a discovery might raise theological questions about creation, original sin, the soul, and redemption. The materials do not present those possibilities as evidence that extraterrestrial beings exist, nor do they claim to speak for every religion or every Christian denomination.
This distinction reflects a broader principle about the limits of disciplines. In a June 1, 1988, letter to Vatican Observatory director George V. Coyne, Pope John Paul II wrote: “The Church does not propose that science should become religion or religion science.” He also wrote: “Only a dynamic relationship between theology and science can reveal those limits which support the integrity of either discipline, so that theology does not profess a pseudo-science and science does not become an unconscious theology.”

Applied to UAP, the principle is straightforward: telescopes, radar, cameras, and physical analysis address what was observed and what caused it. Theology can address how a confirmed discovery might affect beliefs about creation or humanity. Neither method should be used as a substitute for the other.

What cannot responsibly be claimed about other religions
The available material does not establish a measured consensus among Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, Christians as a whole, or members of any other worldwide tradition. It also does not provide a population statistic showing how religious adherents would respond to confirmed extraterrestrial life. Statements such as “religion rejects aliens” or “all religions welcome aliens” go beyond the evidence unless they identify a particular tradition, authority, date, and teaching.
How to evaluate a UFO claim without jumping to a conclusion
- Define the claim. Is the report about a light, a physical object, a biological signal, or a claim of recovered material? Do not treat all categories as interchangeable.
- Locate the original data. Prefer raw video, complete sensor files, timestamps, coordinates, weather records, and calibration information over edited clips or summaries.
- Check perspective and scale. Without reliable range and angle, apparent speed, size, and acceleration can be badly misjudged.
- Look for independent measurements. A second sensor or witness can help, but only if the records are genuinely independent and time-synchronized.
- Test ordinary explanations first. Compare the observation with aircraft routes, balloons, drones, satellites, birds, planets, weather, reflections, compression artifacts, and camera motion.
- Separate “not explained” from “explained as extraterrestrial.” If ordinary causes cannot yet be tested, the correct status is unresolved—not alien.
- State the confidence level and limits. Explain which facts are measured, which are inferred, and which remain unknown.
Common reasoning errors in UFO and alien discussions
“Unidentified” means “extraterrestrial”
This changes a category label into a cause. An investigator who cannot identify an object is reporting an information gap. The gap may close with better data, as in cases attributed to balloons or other ordinary objects.
“There is no evidence” means “it has been disproved”
NASA’s statement concerns the evidence currently available to the agency and the scientific literature. It does not prove that life elsewhere cannot exist. The correct conclusion is limited: extraterrestrial life or technology has not been credibly demonstrated.

A religious possibility is treated as a physical measurement
A theologian may consider how a discovery would affect doctrines about creation or redemption. That is not a measurement of an object’s speed, material, or origin. Conversely, a scientific observation does not by itself settle every theological question about meaning.
One case is generalized to every case
AARO’s balloon assessment shows that at least one unusual-looking report can have an ordinary explanation. It neither resolves all UAP reports nor supplies evidence for an alien explanation of unresolved ones.
What would change the scientific assessment?
The assessment could change if investigators obtained evidence that is independently verifiable, robust against ordinary explanations, and reproducible. For example, several calibrated instruments might record the same object from different locations, allowing its trajectory and physical properties to be reconstructed. A material sample could be persuasive if its chain of custody were secure and independent laboratories confirmed a composition or manufacturing signature that could not plausibly be terrestrial.
Until evidence of that quality appears, the most accurate position is neither certainty that aliens are visiting Earth nor certainty that life elsewhere is impossible. It is disciplined uncertainty: classify what the data support, identify what remains unknown, and avoid turning an open question into a conclusion.
