It is an authorization protocol—not a universal password replacement or a feature every agent supports. The service still needs a UCAN integration that defines and enforces what each granted capability means.
What UCAN delegation does
UCAN stands for User Controlled Authorization Network. Its specifications describe principals identified by decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and signed authorizations called delegations. A delegation identifies an issuer, an audience, a subject, a command, a policy, a nonce, and a validity period. The issuer signs it with a private key; the recipient receives authority expressed by the delegation, not the issuer’s key.

The UCAN Delegation Specification v1.0.0 describes delegation as a way to “transfer authority without transferring cryptographic keys.” The UCAN Specification’s security considerations likewise say private keys “SHOULD NOT move from one context to another.” UCAN Delegation Specification v1.0.0 · UCAN Specification

Think of a delegation as a limited work pass: identify the agent and resource, grant only the action needed, constrain the policy or arguments where the application supports it, and set an expiration. This model works only when the target service understands UCAN and validates the requested operation.

How authority is scoped and passed along
Capabilities name the allowed action
A capability associates a subject or resource with a command and policy. Command paths can be hierarchical, so a grant to a broader path can include descendant commands. The / wildcard is especially powerful: it can cover all capabilities for a resource, so it should not be used as a casual shortcut.
Delegation chains can narrow, not enlarge
An agent may delegate authority onward, but each direct delegation must restate or attenuate the authority it received. A downstream recipient cannot validly use a chain to expand the original grant. In the TypeScript implementation, the application supplies functions that determine whether a child resource or ability may be delegated from its parent; those rules depend on the application’s resource model. What a UCAN token does not guarantee
A valid signature is not proof that an operation is safe
A proof chain can be cryptographically valid while the requested operation is semantically invalid. At execution time, the service must verify ownership of the actual resource and interpret the command for that resource. A token cannot supply correct resource-specific command meanings by itself.

Revocation does not reveal every sub-delegation
UCAN includes revocation, but a delegate can subdelegate without notifying the original issuer. The UCAN Specification says the protocol does not provide confinement: it cannot guarantee knowledge of every sub-delegation. Its security considerations put it this way: “UCANs do not offer confinement (as that would require all processes to be online), so it is impossible to guarantee knowledge of all of the sub-delegations that exist.” UCAN Specification

It does not secure an untrusted channel or every surrounding ACL
The specification does not claim special protection against person-in-the-middle attacks. It recommends delegating only to trusted, authenticated agents over secure channels and checking that the topmost issuer is the expected DID. If a UCAN integration wraps a service whose access controls remain outside UCAN, those external authorization paths enlarge the security surface and weaken the guarantees.
Invocation replay needs implementation checks
For invocation replay protection, the specification calls for a unique CID for each invocation and an executor-side check against a local store of unexpired UCAN hashes. A deployment must implement that check; a signed token alone does not prevent replay.

How to grant an agent bounded authority
- Use a distinct key for the device and use case. Avoid reusing a key across unrelated devices or tasks; a leaked key should expose as little as possible.
- Choose the exact resource. Identify which resource the task needs, and ensure the service can verify that the issuer owns or controls it.
- Grant the narrowest capability. Name the required command and constrain its policy or arguments where the integration supports that. Avoid
/and broad parent paths unless the task genuinely requires them. - Set a short validity period. UCAN delegations include an expiration; keep it no longer than the task needs.
- Authenticate the recipient and channel. Confirm the agent’s identity, use a secure channel, and verify the chain’s topmost issuer is the expected DID.
- Enforce semantics at execution. Check resource ownership, command meaning, delegation rules, and invocation uniqueness where replay protection is required.
These controls follow the UCAN Specification’s least-authority and key-management guidance. They limit what a properly integrated agent can do, but cannot make an unsafe application or an untrusted recipient safe.

UCAN is a set of specifications, not a drop-in connector for every account or AI agent. An integration needs resource-specific commands, rules for whether a child resource or ability may be delegated, validation at execution, and appropriate handling for expiration, revocation, and replay. When the service continues to rely on ambient access controls outside UCAN, those controls remain part of the security model.

Choosing a library
The working-group directory lists implementations in TypeScript, Rust, Go, and Haskell. The reviewed material does not establish a controlled feature or performance comparison, so choose based on your application’s language and runtime, support for current v1 specifications, maintenance and compatibility, and whether the library’s delegation semantics fit your resources. Does this solve the AI-agent password problem?
It addresses one important part: an integrated service can give an agent bounded authority without transferring the owner’s private key or master credential. But the specifications reviewed do not establish support by a specific AI-agent platform or document a production integration for one. Do not assume an agent can accept UCAN delegations until its platform and the target service explicitly support the protocol and enforce its capabilities.
No published statistic in the cited specifications quantifies UCAN’s effect on AI-agent credential security. The useful claim is architectural: UCAN is designed to convey delegated authority while keeping private keys in their original context. Its practical protection depends on narrow grants, trustworthy identity and transport, and correct enforcement by the application.
