Ubuntu Unity 22.04.1 Released in 2022 With Unity 7.6: What Changed

Ubuntu Unity 22.04.1 arrived on August 4, 2022, with Unity 7.6, a visual and maintenance update to the classic Unity 7 desktop. It was built on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Jammy Jellyfish—not a new Ubuntu base series. In August 2026, it is a historical release rather than the current Ubuntu Unity download; the project now points users to newer releases.

What Ubuntu Unity 22.04.1 was

Ubuntu Unity 22.04.1 was the first point release in the Ubuntu Unity 22.04 series. Its base was Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, whose upstream point release was also numbered 22.04.1. The refreshed installation image included updated packages from that base and Unity 7.6. It was a community-built Ubuntu desktop flavor, distinct from Canonical’s standard Ubuntu Desktop release.

The three names refer to different things: Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS is the upstream point release; Ubuntu Unity 22.04.1 is the flavor’s installation image; and Unity 7.6 is the desktop shell and related components included in it. The release was described at the time as the first major Unity 7 update in roughly six years. 9to5Linux’s release coverage reported its date, base, and changes.

When 22.04.1 launched, Ubuntu Unity was described as an unofficial flavor. That description applies to the 2022 release context, not to the project’s later status: Ubuntu flavor documentation lists Ubuntu Unity 22.10, released in October 2022, as its first official release. Ubuntu’s flavor documentation records that milestone.

Why Unity 7.6 mattered

Unity was Ubuntu’s default desktop before Canonical returned Ubuntu Desktop to GNOME starting with Ubuntu 17.10. Unity 7.6 revived and modernized the existing Unity 7 desktop rather than replacing it with a new shell. It kept the familiar launcher, Dash, and HUD workflow while refreshing the appearance and adapting the code to newer Ubuntu libraries.

“Latest Unity” in the 2022 announcement meant the latest Unity 7 release at that time. Unity 7.6 was not Canonical’s current default desktop, Unity 8, or Lomiri—the separate convergence and mobile-oriented project associated with Unity 8’s lineage. Linuxiac’s coverage of Unity 7.6 describes the desktop changes and code updates.

What changed in Unity 7.6

Refreshed interface

  • The Dash and HUD received a redesigned, flatter look, with rounded Dash corners and the system-wide blur retained.
  • Dock menus and tooltips were modernized.
  • Unity and Unity Control Center gained desktop accent-color support, and the Control Center’s theme list and information panels were updated.

Fixes and technical improvements

  • Dash previews received fixes for broken application information and ratings.
  • The dock’s Empty Trash action was made to work using Nemo instead of Nautilus.
  • Low-graphics mode behavior and Dash performance were improved.
  • The Unity 7 shell source code moved to GitLab; build-process and standalone launcher-test issues were also addressed.

Memory claims need context

Release-era coverage reported approximately 700–800 MB of RAM after a fresh Ubuntu Unity installation. That is a reported snapshot, not a universal benchmark: memory use depends on hardware, background services, applications, graphics drivers, session type, and how it is measured. The figure does not guarantee that Unity will use less memory on every computer.

What Ubuntu Unity 22.04.1 fixed

The point-release announcement highlighted fixes to Appearance settings in Unity Control Center, the ability to choose a desktop accent color there, and resolution of a double-headerbar problem affecting some users with gtk3-nocsd. It also incorporated upstream changes and updated packages. The full release context is described in the 9to5Linux announcement.

Installing or updating the 22.04 series

Fresh installation

The 22.04.1 image was available from the Ubuntu Unity project when it launched. Do not treat that historical image as the project’s current recommendation. For a general Ubuntu installation, the workflow is to obtain an ISO, create a bootable USB, and start the computer from it; Ubuntu’s download page explains the general process.

  1. Get an image from the project’s official download page or an official archive, and verify its checksum if one is published.
  2. Write the ISO to a USB drive, taking care to select the USB device because writing the image erases it. balenaEtcher offers a graphical flashing workflow; Ventoy is an alternative for booting multiple ISO files from one drive.
  3. Boot from the USB and test the live session before installing. Check Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, suspend, and external displays.
  4. Back up important files before installation, especially before choosing an option that erases a disk.

Updating an existing Ubuntu Unity 22.04 installation

For users already on Ubuntu Unity 22.04, release-era instructions used this command to update installed packages within the release:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

It does not by itself upgrade the system to a newer Ubuntu release. Avoid adding old third-party Unity repositories just to reproduce historical setup instructions; their ownership, signing keys, package availability, and compatibility may have changed.

Common installation and recovery problems

  • The USB does not appear in the boot menu: Check the computer’s firmware boot-key instructions, confirm the image was written as bootable media, and review Secure Boot settings if necessary.
  • The screen goes black during startup: Try a graphics-safe or nomodeset boot option if available, then investigate graphics-driver compatibility.
  • Title bars appear twice: Check whether the gtk3-nocsd issue is involved and whether the installation has received available updates.
  • Wi-Fi or graphics acceleration is missing: Test the live image before installing. An Ubuntu base does not guarantee that every device works with every driver.
  • The desktop breaks after repositories were mixed: Back up configuration, remove unsupported third-party sources, restore official Ubuntu sources, and only then consider reinstalling affected packages.
  • A distribution upgrade fails: Check for a current backup, adequate free disk space, a healthy package manager, and disabled third-party repositories before trying again.

Who it suited—and who should choose something else

Good fit in 2022

  • People who preferred Unity’s launcher, Dash, and HUD interaction model.
  • Users seeking a classic desktop arrangement without switching to GNOME Shell.
  • Existing Ubuntu Unity 22.04 users who wanted the integrated fixes in the refreshed image.
  • Developers and contributors interested in the revived Unity 7 codebase.

Unity 7.6’s reported resource use made it interesting to people with older hardware, but no release-era memory figure establishes how it will perform on a particular machine.

Poor fit in August 2026

  • Users who need a current download, recent hardware support, and up-to-date drivers and security maintenance.
  • Users who want Canonical’s standard Ubuntu Desktop rather than Unity.
  • Anyone expecting Unity 8 or Lomiri rather than the Unity 7 desktop.
  • Users who do not want to troubleshoot a community-maintained desktop flavor.

What to use instead today

As of August 2026, the Ubuntu Unity project website identifies Ubuntu Unity 26.04 as its regular release and recommends Ubuntu Unity 24.04.4 LTS for long-term stability, with support listed through 2027. Follow the project’s current guidance rather than downloading 22.04.1 for a new everyday installation.

  • Want Unity’s workflow: Choose a current Ubuntu Unity release from the project’s site.
  • Want Canonical’s standard desktop: Use the current Ubuntu Desktop download, which is GNOME-based rather than Unity-based: ubuntu.com/download/desktop.
  • Want a traditional desktop without Unity-specific Dash and HUD behavior: Ubuntu MATE is another recognized Ubuntu flavor listed in Ubuntu’s flavor documentation.
  • Want only a Unity-like layout on standard Ubuntu: GNOME extensions can approximate some elements, but they do not reproduce every Unity component and may break as GNOME versions change.

Ubuntu Unity 22.04.1 remains useful as a record of Unity 7’s revival: it brought a refreshed interface and practical fixes to an Ubuntu 22.04-based system. Its significance is historical; for a current installation, use the project’s newer release guidance.
