Ubuntu LTS vs interim releases: which release should you install?

Install an Ubuntu LTS release unless you can name a specific newer kernel, language runtime, compiler, hardware enablement, or feature that you need immediately. LTS is the lower-maintenance choice for servers, work computers, shared systems, and projects expected to remain in place. An interim release is a production-quality option for developers and teams that deliberately want newer upstream software and are prepared to upgrade on a much shorter schedule.

The choice is not “stable versus unstable.” Ubuntu describes interim releases as production-quality. The real trade-off is continuity and a longer maintenance horizon on one side, versus faster access to new capabilities and more frequent release work on the other.

Ubuntu LTS or interim: the decision at a glance

Ubuntu publishes a release every six months. LTS releases arrive every two years, and the releases between them are interim versions. Ubuntu version numbers use the year and month of release, so the number identifies when a release appeared rather than ranking it as a “major” or “minor” edition.

Decision axis Ubuntu LTS Ubuntu interim
Release cadence One LTS every two years New Ubuntu releases arrive every six months; interim versions fill the gaps between LTS releases
Standard security maintenance Five years for packages in the Main component Nine months
Software and hardware freshness A deliberately longer-lived baseline Newer kernels, languages, toolchains and features arrive sooner
Upgrade workload Fewer release upgrades to plan You must move to a subsequent release before the support period ends
Best fit Production, enterprise, servers and long-lived projects Developers or teams with a concrete need for newer upstream capabilities

Canonical’s lifecycle guidance recommends LTS for production environments and long-term projects. It positions interim releases for users and teams that move quickly. That is a useful default, but it is not a rule that every desktop user must follow: a developer who needs a newly supported compiler or kernel may reasonably choose interim.

FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.

What an LTS release is

A long-lived baseline

An LTS release is Ubuntu’s continuity-oriented edition. Its package set, kernel, desktop stack and system libraries are intended to remain a dependable foundation while security fixes and selected maintenance updates are delivered over a longer period. You can standardize a fleet on one LTS, document it for colleagues, and avoid making a release upgrade part of every few months of operations.

“Long-term” describes the release commitment, not a promise that every individual package receives identical treatment forever. Ubuntu’s standard maintenance figures apply to packages in the Main component. Packages in other components, software installed from outside Ubuntu’s repositories, and hardware-specific drivers can have different update policies.

Why LTS is the normal production choice

Servers, build machines, office computers, lab systems and self-hosted applications usually benefit more from predictable maintenance than from having every upstream feature on day one. A longer baseline gives administrators time to test application updates, schedule downtime, update documentation and train users before changing the operating system.

LTS also reduces the number of release transitions in a system’s useful life. Fewer transitions do not eliminate testing: kernel, driver, database, container and application compatibility still need checking. They do make that work easier to schedule and less likely to arrive unexpectedly.

What an interim release is

Production quality, shorter commitment

An interim release is an official Ubuntu release, not a beta channel. Ubuntu’s release documentation calls interim versions production-quality and gives users time to update before support ends. The defining difference in this comparison is the short support horizon, not an assertion that interim software is inherently unreliable.

What you get sooner

Interim releases are the faster route to newer kernels, language versions, compilers, build systems, desktop components and hardware support. That can matter when a recently released laptop, graphics device or processor is poorly supported by an older baseline, or when a project requires an upstream language or toolchain feature that has not yet reached an LTS repository.

Newer does not automatically mean better for every workload. A new toolchain can expose warnings or build changes, a kernel can alter driver behavior, and a desktop component can change defaults that your team has documented. Interim is most defensible when the newer capability is a requirement rather than a vague preference.

Support, security maintenance and the meaning of “long term”

Standard support periods

The ordinary Ubuntu lifecycle gives LTS packages in Main five years of standard security maintenance. An interim release receives nine months of updates. The shorter period means that an interim installation must have a planned destination: the next release, another supported interim release, or an LTS version when the upgrade path permits it.

Do not treat the nine-month period as a grace period during which you can ignore upgrades. Waiting until the end leaves less time to discover application incompatibilities, replace unsupported repositories or recover from a failed transition.

Ubuntu Pro, ESM and package scope

Ubuntu Pro can extend security maintenance for eligible packages, including coverage for packages in the Universe component. Eligibility, component scope and subscription terms matter. The extension should not be simplified into “every package on every LTS is covered for ten years.”

Canonical’s lifecycle material describes five years of standard maintenance followed by five years of Extended Security Maintenance for applicable LTS coverage. It also describes an optional Legacy add-on after that period. A possible 15-year total therefore depends on the relevant package, the applicable maintenance program and purchasing the optional add-on; it is not 15 years of identical, automatic support for every installed package.

What support does not cover automatically

  • Third-party repositories may stop publishing packages on their own schedule.
  • Proprietary drivers and vendor applications can have separate compatibility requirements.
  • Software you compile yourself is your responsibility to rebuild and test.
  • Security maintenance for one package component does not imply identical maintenance for all components.

Which release should you install for common scenarios?

New personal desktop with no special requirement

Choose LTS. It provides a stable base for web browsing, office work, development, media and general use while reducing the need to perform release upgrades. If a particular device does not work correctly, investigate hardware certification and test the live environment rather than switching to interim solely because it is newer.

Pro Tip: Maximize performance by reformatting to your optimal file system.(FAT32: Universal compatibility (files under 4GB); exFAT: Cross-platform large file support; NTFS: Advanced Windows features (encryption/compression))
  • LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.

Desktop with brand-new hardware

Start with the certified-hardware list and a USB try-out session. If the hardware works on LTS, the longer-lived baseline is usually preferable. If a required device genuinely needs a newer kernel or driver stack and the interim release supplies it, interim may be justified. Record the reason so you can reassess it at the next upgrade boundary.

Developer workstation

Choose LTS when your projects can use supported language and toolchain versions, or when you want the operating system to stay quiet while you work. Choose interim when a specific upstream capability is unavailable on LTS and alternatives such as a language-version manager, container, virtual machine or backported toolchain would not meet your requirements.

Consider whether the need is for the host operating system or only for an application environment. If a container or isolated development environment supplies the newer compiler, upgrading the entire host may create maintenance work without solving a real problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Production server or long-running service

Use LTS unless the service has a documented reason to track newer kernel or platform features. A server upgrade affects monitoring, backup jobs, firewall rules, agents, storage drivers, databases and deployment automation. A longer support window gives you time to test those dependencies and schedule the change.

Ubuntu’s Server guide documents upgrades between LTS versions as sequential: an LTS system proceeds to the next LTS rather than skipping directly to a later one. Treat that as guidance for the documented Server path and verify the instructions for the exact source and target versions before running an upgrade. Desktop upgrade behavior and release prompts should not be assumed to match the Server guide.

Short-lived test, training or feature-validation machine

Interim can be a sensible choice when the machine exists to validate a new kernel, language, desktop stack or hardware combination and will be rebuilt or upgraded as part of the test plan. Define the end date, backup anything valuable and keep the test separate from systems that other people depend on.

How to decide when the answer is not obvious

Use this sequence rather than choosing by habit:

  1. Name the required capability. Write down the exact kernel behavior, language version, compiler feature, driver, device support or Ubuntu feature you need.
  2. Check whether the capability is actually absent from LTS. A container, virtual machine, language manager or separately packaged toolchain may provide it without changing the host release.
  3. Estimate the maintenance cost. Include release-upgrade testing, downtime, third-party repository fixes, driver validation, user retraining and rollback planning.
  4. Choose the smallest change that solves the problem. Prefer LTS plus an isolated newer component when that meets the requirement; choose interim when the operating-system baseline itself must be newer.
  5. Set a calendar reminder immediately. For interim, track the support end date from the day of installation. For LTS, schedule periodic maintenance and a future release assessment even though the support window is longer.

Installing and testing Ubuntu before you commit

Check hardware first

Ubuntu’s installation guidance recommends consulting its certified-hardware listing. Certification indicates that Canonical tested the listed device with Ubuntu; it is useful evidence, not a guarantee that every configuration, firmware revision or accessory will behave identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are buying a computer, check the live certification listing immediately before purchase because models and configurations change. If you already own the machine, test the exact hardware rather than relying only on a product family name.

Create removable installation media

Current Ubuntu Desktop documentation recommends an 8 GB or larger USB flash drive for bootable installation media. Rewriting the drive destroys the data already stored on it, so copy anything important elsewhere before using it. The image-writing process and the installer are software steps; the documentation does not require a paid application.

  1. Back up the USB drive’s existing files.
  2. Download the Ubuntu Desktop image appropriate to the release you intend to test.
  3. Use an image-writing application to write the image to the USB drive, selecting the correct removable disk.
  4. Eject the drive safely, restart the computer and select the USB device from its firmware boot menu.

Use the live session

The Desktop installer can start a try-out session from USB without making permanent changes to the computer. Use that session to check Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration, display scaling, sound, suspend and resume, the camera, touchpad, external monitors and any specialized peripherals you need. A successful live session is not a complete guarantee: installed drivers, disk encryption and firmware updates can change the result, so test important workloads after installation.

Storage and version-specific requirements

The Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 installation tutorial specifies 25 GB of storage. That figure belongs to that version’s tutorial and should not be treated as a universal requirement for every future Ubuntu release, flavor or installation layout. Check the instructions for the exact image you plan to install, and leave additional space for updates, user data, logs, snapshots and development tools.

Planning upgrades instead of reacting to them

An LTS maintenance plan

Keep a written inventory of enabled repositories, installed drivers, locally modified configuration, backup coverage and applications that must be available after reboot. Before moving to the next LTS, test a representative machine or clone, verify restore procedures and check vendor instructions for databases, virtualization, storage and security software.

  • Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)

Do not assume that a later LTS can be selected directly from any older release. Ubuntu’s documented Server path uses the next sequential LTS. The exact supported route, prompts and timing depend on the installed version, so follow the current version-specific guide rather than copying a command from an unrelated release.

An interim maintenance plan

Record the release date and support end date, then schedule the upgrade well before the latter. Keep the system close to the stock Ubuntu repositories where practical, because external repositories are common sources of upgrade blockers. Test the next release on a spare machine or virtual machine, export configuration, confirm backups and make sure you have console or recovery access if the system is remote.

Interim is a poor fit for an unattended appliance whose owner cannot perform upgrades. The release may work well on day one, but its support obligation remains part of the design, not an optional administrative task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“Interim means unstable”

That is inaccurate. Ubuntu’s project documentation describes interim releases as production-quality. The practical concern is the shorter maintenance commitment and the resulting upgrade schedule.

“LTS means every package is maintained identically for ten or fifteen years”

That overstates the policy. Standard maintenance, Extended Security Maintenance, Universe coverage and the optional Legacy add-on have different eligibility and terms. Check the package component and the applicable Ubuntu Pro coverage for the software you actually run.

Choosing interim because it feels newer

Newness is not a requirement. Identify the feature or hardware support you need and test whether it is available through an isolated toolchain or application environment. If not, document why the newer operating-system baseline is worth the upgrade work.

Ignoring hardware validation

A newer release can improve support, but a release number alone does not certify a laptop, graphics adapter or peripheral. Use the certified-hardware listing and the live USB session before replacing a working installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving upgrades until the final weeks

Late upgrades compress testing and recovery into the least convenient part of the lifecycle. Put the upgrade on the calendar at installation time and maintain a rollback or rebuild plan, especially for remote systems.

A practical selection checklist

  • Choose LTS if the system is production, shared, remote, difficult to replace or expected to remain unchanged for years.
  • Choose LTS if you do not have a named requirement for a newer kernel, language, toolchain or feature.
  • Consider interim if a specific capability is unavailable on LTS and cannot be isolated cleanly in a container, virtual machine or separately managed toolchain.
  • Choose interim only if someone owns the release-upgrade calendar, testing and recovery work.
  • For either choice, check certified hardware, test from USB, verify backups and read the instructions for the exact release before upgrading.

The practical verdict

For most installations, LTS is the responsible default because it minimizes forced change while preserving a supported Ubuntu base. Interim is the specialist choice: use it when faster access to an upstream capability is worth accepting a shorter support horizon and a recurring upgrade obligation. Decide from the capability and maintenance plan you can demonstrate, not from the label “newest.”
